Sizemore was a GREAT actor; he was especially skilled at playing working class, gruff, often dangerous underworld characters. He was similar to Michael Madsen in that respect, but I feel Sizemore brought more nuance and authenticity to those roles, whereas Madsen made his characters more of a caricature. Sizemore could hold a scene with ANYONE, and when you saw him in a role, you at least knew he'd be interesting and memorable. He was truly one of the great talents of the last few generations; I'll always remember his performances, and I hope he's finally at peace. R.I.P. Tom...E

I agree, he was a truly great actor. He had a screen presence that very few actors have. He was so damned good and believable in every role. Such a shame he couldn't get his demons under control. :(

I disagree with your evaluation of his acting talents. His roles were memorable, but he was essentially playing himself. A very one dimensional actor more like Mickey Rourke than Philip Seymour Hoffman or Heath Ledger.

Sober a few years... But my veins have collapsed, teeth all broke up, scars all over. Took me a while to accept the damage I've done can't be fixed. But its worth the freedom from drugs. It's so sad he died still struggling with addiction.

As his friend did you ever hold him accountable for his abuse of women and sexual abuse of a child? It could have saved his life and allowed him to turn it around. I’m sorry your friend died but he unapologetically caused chaos and horror for a lot of people. I know plenty of addicts and they don’t terrorize people the way he did. No one ever cares about the damage to the victims 🤦🏽‍♀️ as a victim myself, I understand the years and effort it takes to heal. He had no accountability whatsoever. If the people around him loved him they would have held him accountable instead of allowing him to be a monster and enabling him.

Yes, that is so true. My 37 year old son used a lot of alcohol and some illegial drugs between 16-24. He has not use that stuff in years and now he has a lot of health problems from his poor choices as a young man. It does catch up.

I remember reading Tom's book when I was battling my own horrible addiction. He was so truthful it made me feel better & gave me hope. So besides his many great acting roles, I'll always appreciate that the most. I even read it again when I eventually got into rehab and began my life of sobriety. RIP - Tom, I pray you made your peace with Almighty God. You are appreciated!

Congrats on your sobriety! I’m also an addict with many years in recovery and listening to this video made me think how detrimental fame is to an addict. There’s a lot more temptation because drugs/alcohol are everywhere and people are offering them to you constantly. I would’ve probably ended up like Michael Jackson if I had his wealth and fame. That amount of access is deadly.

Yes, Stephen Segal comment 😂. My friends and I used to watch a poor, dark/low light level video (yes, old) of "Under Siege". The dark filter made it much more brooding, mysterious, suspenseful and even improved Segal's performance. When we watched it at normal quality it was nowhere near as atmospheric or good. 😂😂

So I'm skeptical that Sizemore was the lone perpetrator of violence in those cases. I'm not saying it's right, but it's not the same as "classic" domestic violence.

Tom Sizemore put out a biography a few years ago where he laid out his life's story and pretty much summed up his problems with addictions as the source of a lot of grief. It was a very honest and straightforward book about someone who scaled the highest mountains in entertainment only to undermine himself with substance abuse. Sad story. RIP.

It was a very honest and straight forward examination of Sizemore's life including the autobiography, career, and addictions. Tom’s acting skills were top notch. He was one of my favorite actors, especially in the 90’s. If Tom was in a movie, it enticed me to rent it. I was just thinking about that movie the other day ... I was like ... No way anyone remembers that movie ... here's something, that part where everyone was flying was done with full cable rigs and was one of the most complex special effects shots ever done at the time...that was one of those completely competent well produced movies that was just kinda stupid. Like, the acting and production was spot on. But what a dumb story... Ghosts who want to figure out how to go to heaven or whatever.

Gave up on himself? Quite the opposite .. his last movie with Danny Trejo was called Vampfather. He posted a picture of them together hours before his time arrived. I am an acquaintance to and worked with another actor in the same film. I think this is a doorway to follow in his footsteps. Hello Dr Grande... nice to see you. For a person who struggled with drugs all his life.. it's amazing he was able to perform so well. It did however change/or bring out the worst in him. An addict can be just as harming to others as one with mental illness can be. For him to be disgusted by someone suffering mental illness I find ironic. I think it is hard for some people with high expectations of themselves to admit there is personal failure. He was proud of his work, and he had a right to be. It is off putting that he hurt his partner. Maybe if he had survived longer he would have been able to come to terms with that part of himself.

I'm same age as Tom, grew up in the same culture. My older brothers were using a variety of substances. After high school, I enlisted in the US Air Force. It was the best decision I ever made during that time. Tom seemed to unravel after saving private ryan. He became a party animal, out of control. I didnt know he passed away. What a shame!

Didn't matter the movie: Tom was always excellent. He became one of the faces that could sell me on whether or not I'd be renting a certain film. The movie could be falling apart, mired in total drudgery, and Tom would still find a way to bring a compelling character to the screen. I was always saddened to hear of his many, many issues. Simple reminder that we're all only human but in that humanity lies both the best of grace and the worst of destructive impulses. I'm actually glad Tom is finally at rest. I wasn't really surprised that he had died, but was surprised it wasn't from an overdose. But, I was very saddened by the news. I was really hoping he'd turn his life around because you could sense he had so much self loathing, vulnerability, anger, and pain. That may have been that certain ingredient he had that made his characters so believable. There aren't very many actors, still actively working, who I actually consistently liked. But he was one of them along with Gene Hackman, Helen Miren, Robert De Niro, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kate Blanchet, Jeremy Irons, Clint Eastwood, Mikael Persbrandt, Judy Dench, and a handful more.

I met and worked with him the day before the Born Killers news came out. I landed from the flight after I wrapped and got a text about it and just thought “well, that film is now over.” He was worse for wear, but was a nice guy from my limited interaction with him… (but then I never had to sit on his lap). I hope that film (Made Vicious) comes out someday, because it was a fun one.

I liked Sizemore as an actor. I think he brought some authenticity to the tough guy roles he played. One could argue that he didn’t really show a lot of range. He mainly played criminals, cops, soldiers but he was really good on camera in all those classic movies he starred in…especially Heat.

There’s a documentary called thin that I watched. It was about girls with anorexia. It was powerful. They can’t get their food right. they just want to be right in their body but they could never get it and somehow they’re minds are connected to a place where they can’t get it right and now just goes in circles forever. it was horrifying. One of them dies.

15 year old kids lack wisdom no matter their “maturity” through life experience. It’s tragic that bad decisions can hunt people mercilessly. My own father had very similar experiences despite being a phenomenal guitarist. As a therapist, all I can say is please do the work to heal trauma. Freedom from addiction is possible.

My Mom grew up with his Dad n his family on Pine Street, in Detroit, near where the old Tiger Stadium once stood. She was life long best friends with Sally Sizemore, who was his Aunt, til she passed away. My mom is 80 now n was so sad to hear Tom had a Stroke on Feb. 18 which happened to be my parents Anniversary. My Dad passed away too. It's so sad.

Tom was a great actor. I loved his movies and wish he would have gotten the help he needed to be able to live a normal life after the drug use. His gone now and I hope he can finally rested from his demons. Rest in peace Tom Sizemore.

Dr. Grande, this is probably your most thorough and best analysis of a very complicated actor. I wondered what happened to him and didn’t even know that he died just last year. What wasted talent! I remember watching the entire cast of Saving Private Ryan on the View and it was so obvious that he was high and that Tom Hanks seemed very upset and embarrassed by him. Again, what a waste!!

It’s Sad… He was a great actor… Loved him in Saving Private Ryan! I can understand his love affair with Dope as I’ve had my own ups and downs with painkillers after a severe accident. However mine started 10 yrs ago at 40. I can’t imagine starting at 15……… that’s a long , rough road to travel. R.I.P. Tom 🙏🏻

His childhood dream came true and he threw it away with drugs. This case clearly shows how the affects of drugs are so pervasive. He hurt himself and others. I hope that young people can derive cautionary tales from actors who use drugs. I’m sorry that his story didn’t end like Robert Downey Jr.’s story.

Gabor Maté said, 'We're all addicts.' For most of us, I think he's right. Tom Sizemore was a gifted actor, and I'm sorry he's gone. I feel that we all need to strengthen our mental and physical health with meditation, yoga, or any regular, rigorous exercise.

It's a shame he died so young-, but he probably new it was coming at some level. He was one of those actors who was always fun to watch. He was always good, even when the movie wasn't. He was able to infuse his characters with personality, made it seem as though you were watching a real person, not a fictionalized personality. He was able to bring a feeling of authenticity to his roles, i guess he was what we ball a natural. I'll bet he probably never required too many takes to wrap a scene.. Most of his characters had a considerable amount of emotional baggage or a world weariness about them, and they tended toward the stoic, hardened loner who doesn't let loose emotions loudly or by throwing tantrums. you could read his thoughts and feelings in his eyes and on his face. His expressions and reactions said it all. Only a handful of actors have that quality. George C Scott, Jack Lemmon, Robert Shaw and Denzel Washington come to mind. Watching them, you never feel like you're seeing ACTING. Tom Sizemore had that ability. Too bad he couldn't get his personal life under control. RIP Tom

I met Tom in 2000. He was down to earth and an amicable fellow. Perhaps a bit tipsy. I worked in a bigtime napkin deal restaurant in Beverly Hills and met hundreds of actors, sports stars, politicians and musicians. Tom was funny and demonstrated self deprecating humor. Kudos to him for seeing his 1977 dream through and costarring with DeNiro in Heat a short 20 years later
