So true. Loved ones should never give police these kinds of details. ... including past mental health issues as well. Remember the case of Elisa Lam? As soon as her mother told investigators that she suffered from bipolar .... they basically stopped looking for her. At that point they decided she probably either ran away and didn't want to be found or that she committed suicide of her own volition and therefore it was not a priority to search for her anymore. These kinds of idiot cops are infuriating.

Qualified professionals would hesitate to make those types of assumptions like that. They had zero evidence behind that claim. And no right to say that to her family. Though I am not surprised I'm definitely disgusted. @chad32321323 жыл бұрын
I think the old saying "trust your gut" *usually* works for detectives. I'm sure in a solid majority of cases they use their experience and knowledge to look at the evidence and have a strong feeling for what happened in a case. Problem is putting TOO much stock into that gut feeling without exploring alternatives is something they sometimes do, which happened here. I suspect the fact that the spouse or boyfriend is usually the person responsible for a disappearance weighed very heavily. I get looking into Aaron here, but that despite zero evidence he did it and so much evidence he was telling the truth, it in inexcusable what they did to him. I think the police made up the hoax theory after that purely because they didn't want to admit how bad they screwed up, to save face.

I can't imagine the fear Aaron had knowing the police were spending all their time questioning him and not looking for Denise. She could have been dead while they were playing games. Then to top it off they accuse Denise of trying to get attention by reliving her trauma. I have a family member who suffered trauma. I also took courses in college in mental health and trauma. The idea that the police would even suggest that anyone would want to relive their trauma for excitement is insulting and shows their lack of knowledge, not to mention compassion and empathy. If this is how they deal with victims they are in serious need of retraining. Maybe police officers need to spend more time before they put them out on the street taking actual courses in psychology, mental health and trauma.

I completely agree. Now if I see a cop car I hyperventilate and think I’m doing something wrong. Even though I’m not doing anything wrong. This has destroyed my relationship with my daughter because she was taught to respect cops and they are always right, it also made tons of rumors that I was a drug user and or dealer. To this day not even my own lawyer believes me. He asked me how did I get so many drugs in my house. Not including jobs that have done background checks and I’m getting calls for then and until they check my background. I shake a lot and talk in my sleep and my family completely isolated me. Except my father who was upstairs when it happened and knew how they treated me. They handcuffed my hands and feet and put me in a patty wagon. I asked for a priest or a mental health professional and they said they would get one and never did. There was a string in my hoodie and they didn’t even notice! That’s how people hang them selves while locked up and isolated. I saw a court appointed therapist and he said “well you let him in your house!” I’ve lost everyone I love because of this. It was over 3 years ago and it’s not going away. I can see how people look at me and what they really think and I have no one to help.

Dr. Grande, I have to say one of the results I am experiencing from binge-watching your videos, particularly the true crime stories, is a growing distrust of law enforcement! From many of the "true crime" programs I watch, I had the impression that most police and investigators were very dedicated and competent.

The police and CJ system in America as a whole needs to be overhauled. Starting with education. The incompetence of law enforcement is deteriorating every year it seems. It certainly isn’t improving. Law enforcement is too focused is spending money on more equipment and show of force than investing in training. Great analysis Dr

I could only get more and more enraged as Dr. Grande continued. Exactly how incompetent must one be to get it wrong on numerous occasions??? After they were proven wrong in their “Aaron murdering Dennise” theory and Dennise corroborating Aaron’s telling of events, you mean to tell me not a single officer thought just maybe they should actually look into the case??? And how egotistical must one be to sink down to accusing a victim of sexual assault of fabricating a second assault to “relive the excitement” instead of admitting to being wrong??? Absolutely disgusting! I promise the last thing a victim of sexual assault is reliving is the so called “excitement” of what happened to them.

I like the “ if you call us you’re already guilty” 😆😆 sounds about right. I know Vallejo doesn’t have the best reputation and has a lot of criminal activities, but still this case is outrageous. I think this case shows how easily serious crimes can be overlooked in less safe neighborhoods.

My choice would be “Don’t blame yourself for being a victim, that’s our job.” 😂🤣😂 But seriously, the more I hear, the more it seems that the whole law enforcement system needs an overhaul with training focused on mental health and critical thinking skills. “Defund the Police” is a horrible slogan, but the idea behind it (more $ towards mental health intervention to descalate volatile situations) may not be as kooky as it sounds. 🤷🏼♀️ Excellent video! 💕💖💕👍🏼

From a UK perspective there seems to be an incredible number of law enforcement agencies in the United States and some of them, especially the smaller ones, don't seem overly endowed with competence or integrity. We've went the opposite way in the UK. Perhaps too few which don't have strong links with their locales. For instance I'm in Scotland and we went from about a dozen police forces, each serving a population of several hundred thousand, to one for a population of 5½ million.
@lindalmiller4293 жыл бұрын
Amen!
@mcd54783 жыл бұрын
@@simonw1313 yes, that sounds like too few law enforcement personnel for that population. I’m definitely not for decreasing the number of positions but maybe a cop could have a well trained mental health professional partner riding with them? OR maybe the police academy needs to change the focus of their training.
@simonw13133 жыл бұрын
@@mcd5478 - Its not a question of staff numbers which will vary with the size of the population they have to serve, it's a question of whether lots of small agencies (I think the US has 4,000+ law enforcement agencies) have the expertise or quality of staff to deal with unusual or difficult cases. It seems unlikely that they all will have the capacity to do that.

Also, it always seemed bizarre to me that, as the story goes, the kidnapper "knocked out" the victims using over-the-counter sleep meds.
@donnag79083 жыл бұрын
It depends how much they were given. Also, had they been drinking before the kidnapper arrived? Were either of them on any type of medication that might interact with a sleep medication? You would think the police would want to ask all of those questions before they make an assumption.
