How many rolls of toilet paper would it take to reach the moon? And while we're at it, how much would that all cost? And what would happen to it all when we put it up there? Come find out!

1:14 This can't be right, each pack is less than a mile so the number of packs must be more than the miles of distance
@eklectic497
@eklectic497 3 жыл бұрын
You're right, I multiplied instead of divided the number of miles per pack. That's quite the thing to get wrong here, because it means: It takes 290 000 packs (3.48 million rolls), which cost $1.98 million and weighs 1 570 000 lbs It would take the average person ~167 thousand years to reach, or the US about 4.5 hours. I apologize to anyone who hoarded toilet paper trying to make this a reality, as you'll be $780k off

Actually, I just recently did something similar to this in my chemistry class when learning about how large Avogadro's number was (aka a mole = 6.022 X 10^23). For our assignment we had to choose either counting the weight of a item or the length of an item and comparing that to either the distance to the moon from the earth or how heavy the moon was. The class got to toy around with boundaries a bit and my team picked "How many skittles would it take to reach the moon?" A skittle by itself is like, 14mm in diameter and the moon on google is 238,900 mi away. Plugging all this up into a chart, '14mm = 0.0000086992 mi x 6.022 X 10^23' which was like- '5104969.4871 mi'. This shows how large a mole was BY USING SKITTLES

Yet avogadro's number is still very tiny compare to other big numbers. For example googol or googolplex. And of course there are even bigger numbers. And exponential growth could easily take you beyond the moon very soon. A sheet of toilet paper is enough if you could fold it enough times (not even a big number).

I am honestly dissapointed you didnt mention folding each square of paper and stacking them on top of each other like that 😔. Like just experimenting with the paper I could get around 6 folds in per square which would make it 2^6 times thicker, or 64 times thicker. And with at least 64 times thicker toilet paper that saves you 64 times less amount of roles and money.
@HappyBeezerStudios
@HappyBeezerStudios 2 жыл бұрын
But that also makes the paper shorter, assuming the folds are along alternating axis, that would mean the sheet is around 8 times shorter, meaning you need 8 times more.
