Thanks Mr. Wogger. It worked for me perfectly. A 5 year old Kohler developed a very slow flush. The rim jets were fine. The siphon jet was so calcified I couldn't even get my finger in it. I had some industrial Zep and poured about 2 cups in the overflow tube and let it set for a couple hours after emptying the bowl. Just let it soak and do its thing. I used a curved end pic and started digging. The huge scales came out after some work. After an hours work, I ended up with a pile of calcium and scales the size of a baseball altogether. The other half went out the drain with a few intermittent flushes. Just be persistent, and if the siphon jet is not nice and smooth to the feel, keep working at it. And when it's nice and smooth, it will work like a million bucks. I am now my wife's hero. Everybody is now trained to flush after every use. Calcium buildup is mostly caused by the very acidic sitting urine. The proof is that the rim jets were perfectly clean. We have very good water here too. I flush every time now just to watch the big explosion of water in 2 seconds. Sometimes I even walk past it and flush it, just to watch and admire the siphon jet do it's thing.

Dude you’re like the dad I never had! For over six months I’ve had a weak flush. Turns out it was the siphon jet. I had not ides that’s what it was called, much less what it does! I cleaned that shit out (pun intended 🤢 😂) with a toothbrush and now it’s working like new!! I’m flushing it just for fun now. 🤣. Thanks again my man. You’re awesome!!

Messed around with the flapper in the tank for hours until I found your video about the siphon jet! I used the head of a 3" screw to scrape out the interior of the jet and almost had a complete blockage cleared. Saved me a lot of time and money. Great video and info! Thank you sir!

Thank you for this vital information. I’ve been working in plant operations maintenance for a long time and just now having to deal with a plugged jet system. it just so happens to be at my house. my toilet was flushing slow, so I put in detergent pellets, and they dissolved enough to finish plugging up the jets.

Good luck. Hope all goes well. Something I forgot to put in the video, but to get better results of the CLR (or vinegar, if that's what you use) is to take a wad of paper towels and put in a Ziplock baggie and use it to plug the siphon jet. That'll keep more of the CLR in the raceway and siphon jet without loosing it into the bowl. Then when you remove the tape from the rim jets, pull the "plug" out of the siphon jet and give it a cleaning. Good luck with your projects.

Wanted to give a big thanks for making this great video. I watched a few before this that talked about the rim jets only, and I did the whole vinegar/duct tape thing, with no success. Thank you for all the information. Clear, concise and complete. FYI I have tried CLR for toilet ring and it didn’t make a difference even after leaving on for several hours. The ring was only after 2 weeks of regular use but there’s a lot of iron, especially, plus other minerals in the well water around here. I’ve found that straight vinegar works best with an occasional use of a pumice stone.
@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 10 ай бұрын
Vinegar is a great safe alternative. Just be careful with that stone. VERY light pressure. Once you scratch that porcelain coating you'll be cleaning a lot more often. Very fine sandpaper, wetted down is another alternative. thanks for the encouraging words and good luck with your projects.

Good video - logical explanations with methodical steps for diagnosing. Moving the flapper chain to a different hole on the lever made it lift high enough to flush right. I think back when I replaced the fill valve (Toto) I had moved the chain to the wrong place. It wasn't a problem until later when probably the jets got more clogged. Now it works 9 out of 10 times, so I'm going to work on those "jets" next.

@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 11 ай бұрын
The inside of the rim jets and raceway normally isn't isn't glazed so unless you're scratching along the bottom of the rim, you shouldn't have to worry, but a good strong plastic utensil or even a small nylon pipe brush should work fine since the CLR should have loosened up any build up. Good luck with your projects.

This is one of the best videos I've seen. Decades of asking people about this and getting half-assed answers. Thank you so much for sharing this. My issue is, within the last month, the toilet has started to smell even after flushing and isn't flushing all the way. No idea why but I'm going to go through these steps!
@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 8 ай бұрын
Go through all the steps and hopefully it helps. If the smell is isolated to the toilet (faucets, other toilets, etc don't have the smell) then there's something in that toilet that's causing the smell. If you pull the lid off the tank and it smells inside the tank you may want to clean the tank thoroughly. If the tank water is fine but it smells once it gets into the bowl, then you have something in the channels in the toilet between the tank and bowl (raceway around the rim, path to siphon jet) that's causing the smell. In that case, cleaning using the steps in this video should help. You may want to plug the siphon jet before pouring the cleaner down the overflow pipe to keep any cleaner from exiting into the bowl, and then let it sit overnight, just to make sure you're getting a thorough cleaning inside. Hope this helps and comment below on the results. Thanks for watching and good luck with your project.

All the new water saving regulations make it tougher and tougher to get a good flush. We've come a long way since the first low flush toilets, but still a long way to go. Currently in process of filming what I think is one of the best water saving toilets out there, and at a price that puts the discount toilets to shame.. super high flushing power and at a low price. Keep watching the channel for it .. hopefully not too much longer.

Great video. I had a clogged siphon jet hole at the bottom loaded with calcifications. I cleaned that out with 'stuppy' needle nose pliers. When I poured CLR into the tube in the tank, the CLR started pouring into the toilet. Why? I also used the duck tape around the rim to cover the rim jets as well. However, after all was done, I do have a great flushing toliet. Trying to understand the issue with the CLR though? Thank you!

Pouring the cleaner (CLR, vinegar, etc) into the overflow pipe results in it going into the raceway around the rim jets and out the siphon jet. That's one thing I need to update the video about. In order to keep more cleaner in the channels to both, take a wad of paper towels and stuff into a baggie and use that as a "plug" in the siphon jet. That'll keep more cleaner in the pathway. Appreciate the feedback and good luck with your projects.

Sounds like you had a minor obstruction in your drain line.. Doing the bucket test works similar to using a plunger, although you risk of overflowing the bowl if there's not enough capacity in the bowl to accommodate the water in the bucket. Something to be mindful of when pouring the water in. Glad it worked for you. Good luck with your future projects.

@@thewoggerswaydiy Great tips throughout the video. Courtesy flush, not too many people mention that and the "flushable" wipes don't go down. Yep, I came to that same conclusion about the clog downstream. Odd enough though, my first go-to is the plunger, however, no matter how many times I tried with the plunger, it would not clear the obstruction, I made sure it had a good seal in the bowl, etc. You had a great explanation of the mechanical workings of the tank. Turned my attention to clogged rim jets and a clogged siphon jet (nice explanation on that as well). Finally, the hot water pour. A final request, I left my ring on (yeah, no glove) when cleaning the siphon jet and it left some marks on the bottom of the bowl. Any tips how to remove the marks without scratching the porcelain?

@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 7 ай бұрын
In over 30 years I have never heard of it referred to as a flush post. The inlet valve is referred to as the "fill valve"... the outlet mechanism, which contains either the flapper or canister and overflow pipe, is known as a flush valve and all manufacturers (Kohler, Mansfield, Fluidmaster, Everbuilt, etc etc) call their product a flush valve. It's possible other countries refer to it as a flush post, just as what we call a compression ring, England refers to it as an Olive. Thanks for watching and good luck with your projects.

Thanks for the descriptions of how this works. I have a question though. When I flush the siphon jet ALWAYS shoots out a large amount of air first. Can't figure out where this comes from
@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 5 ай бұрын
Air gets trapped in the raceway and chute to the siphon jet.. usually the result of clogged rim jets that don't let the air escape. Cleaning the siphon jet and rim jets may cure that issue but it's not really and "issue". If water bubbles come up in the bowl when you flush, then that could be signs of a partial blockage in the drain line somewhere. This also seems to occur in low flush or water conserving toilets more often than others.

Great video, but how do you go on when your toilet tank isn’t easy to get too, for example in a built in unit
@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 7 ай бұрын
You can still check if the issue is in the drain line or toilet by performing the bucket test. If it flushes fine and you've determined the issue is in the toilet you can still clean the siphon and rim jets. Easiest way for a wall mount system with a concealed tank is first to manually clean out the siphon jet as demonstrated, then tape off the rim jets as shown and then poke a hole through the tape over one of the rim jets and use a squeeze bottle with a plastic hose attached to the nozzle. A condiment squeeze bottle you can get, like for ketchup and mustard works well. Just add a piece of hose, about 12" long, over the nozzle and squirt the vinegar or CLR up into the raceway through that hole you made and then tape off the hole. Before you do that, take a small baggie, stuffed with some paper towels, to use as a plug and plug up the siphon jet to keep all the CLR in the raceway and siphon jet to do its magic and hopefully the issue isn't in the mechanics of the tank itself. Good luck with your project

Sir thank you. to say my toilet has been an issue is an understatement. I've had to open 40 year old clean outs, accesses, and all sorts of things. Could not find out why the toilet was slow. Well, the toilet is from the 1950's. ok? yeah I'll replace it soon after the holidays are over (2023 new years eve here now). I rodded, probed, camera'd , could not find the issue. We had some CLR left in a bottle here and the wife did comment about one of the jets having been clogged, but I went and checked ALL of them and 30% of them were half clogged or clogged. I ran an old easter egg dipping wireframe thing (that comes in those kits, you knoe the copper egg holder) and bent it up in those jets. after a CLR treatment). Flapper seems open long enough, float valve is a new one , and levels all set. However, yes however, I hadnt gotten a successful snaking through the entire toilet in a good while. I used a Royobi motorized thing I had gotten for a fathers day present that I use outside on our property draining network, and from what I saw that should be able to go through the toilet entirely. It wouldnt until I got a little forceful with it while it was turning and she did kick back some smell and noise in there. I'm figuring calcification in the jets can sure mean calcification elsewhere. Its old and I've been here over 30 of the years. Nonetheless, a positive result is being seen. I snaked it a bunch of times now while flushing and it seems a lot lot better. The septic system cant really be too much at fault since I had it totally replaced when I moved in 30 years ago. The original issue was needing to flush it a few times, off and on, sometimes good, sometimes not. Seems pretty good right now. Its gurgling back at me like THANK YOU. lol. Well, thanks for your video. It really gave me the scoop on what exactly the toilet does and how it does it. I knew a lot, but your video really saved me I think.

Someone else that caught that. Had to refilm removing the tape due to problem with the initial take so just reapplied the tape to film the removal. Also, you probably won't have much coming out anyway. A lot of the cleaner will exit out the siphon jet and what's in the raceway around the rim jets will get soaked up by the calcium/etc that it's removing. Something I should have put in the video, is how to keep more cleaner in the raceway is to seal off the siphon jet. Usually some paper towels in a baggie that's stuffed into the siphon jet will plug it up and keep more of the CLR, vinegar or cleaner of choice inside without exiting into the bowl. Thanks for watching and your comment.

My plumbing supplier has muriatic acid by the gallon on the shelf. Is that a more powerful sub. for CLR. Was wondering about snaking with the proper kind of snake, to possibly clear a slower flush that backs back into the bowl, returning paper to the bowl after seemingly clearing the bowl. The speed of the flush doesn't build water height in the bowl, but returns some items back to the bowl. Only has rim holes. and.. we have hard water.
@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy Ай бұрын
Have never been a fan of toilets without a siphon jet. Its that rush of water pushing out the waste into the drain that gets the siphoning action going (hence the name siphon jet). Without a siphon jet, and the regs for lower capacity flushing for water saving, you don't get that stronger flushing power you get when you have a siphon jet. With waste returning to the bowl you're most likely not getting a strong enough flush where at the end of the flush there's not enough force to push everything up and over the p-trap inside the toilet. As far as muriatic acid goes, it is a strong acid that works great as a descaler and can remove severe lime and calcium deposits. But, because it's an acid and with the high potency, you need to be careful when handling. Wear gloves and eye protection and be careful when pouring so as not to splash. Good luck with your projects and thanks for watching.

After following your process (I left the CLR in the bowl and rim jets for 26 hours) my toilet flushs perfectly. There were brown stains in the siphon jet and the bottom of the bowl that completely came out with minimal scrubbing. Most shocking was, when I scrubbed inside the area where the waste goes out to be drained and I flushed the second time, a huge piece of calcium dislodged. I took it out and put it in the waste basket. The chunk of calcium was approximately 4 inches round (the same diameter of the waste exit) and about 6 inches long and about 1/8 inch thick! After 26 hours of waiting and cleaning and following your process, my toilet flushs perfectly!

Did it pass the "bucket test"? If so then most likely you don't have an issue in the drain pipes from the toilet or in the toilets internal trap after the bowl. Did you clean out the siphon and rim jets? If so make sure the tank is full and flush it while continuing to hold the handle down until all the water down to the the flush valve opening is expelled. If it flushed ok doing this, but not when you just push the handle and release, then there's not enough water getting to the bowl, most likely because the flapper is closing too early and not letting enough water flush out of the tank. If it still didn't flush out properly then there's probably still some blockage in the siphon or rim jets. Plug the siphon jet and repeat the cleaning process. Plugging the siphon jet will keep more cleaner in the rim jets for a better cleaning. If you have a toilet auger it couldn't hurt to run it down the drain just to ensure there's no partial blockage. If you've done everything and still having issues it may be time to call in a plumber. Good luck and comment on how it goes. Thanks for watching.

nice explanation sir!, how about my toilet, flush is strong when i raised the top lid just a little, but when i leave it closed all the way the water is weak. i already adjusted the chain and still same result, but when i put like a small coin under the top of the lid the flush is very strong its like it needs to breathe
@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 9 ай бұрын
Sounds as though the lid on the tank is sealing so well it's creating a vacuum when you flush, which restricts the water leaving the bowl. Most toilet tanks with have a notch (or divet, or dip or hole.. whatever you want to call it), normally at the back of the tank along the top edge. An older toilet may not have it and if the lid creates a strong seal along the top of the tank, and there's no way for air to get into the tank to replace the area the water took up, then you'll experience the issue you have. Just like plumbing drain lines need to be vented so that water flows freely, your toilet tank needs air to get in to displace the water that's leaving. Your coin hack is providing that path for air to enter the tank. You can also purchase those little adhesive rubber dots (bumpers, etc) used to cushion cabinet doors when they close and stick one in each corner on the underside of the lid where it would contact the top edge of the tank to lift the lid slightly to provide that air gap, so you don't have to worry about dropping your coin every time you lift the lid. Glad you figured out a solution for your issue and good luck with your projects.

Sounds like all the "mechanics" are working properly, just the toilet isn't flushing out. Did you try the bucket test? Does it flush out properly when you do that? If so, then it sounds as though you're just not getting enough water into the bowl fast enough to flush it out. Either the flush valve (in your case it sounds as though you have the Mansfield type) is closing too soon or there's a blockage in the path to the siphon and rim jets. If you're holding down the flush handle to keep the canister open to allow as much water out of the tank as possible but it's still not flushing out, then it's time for a thorough cleaning... tape off the rim jets and plug the siphon jet.. just take a baggie and put some paper towels in it and shove it into the siphon jet to block it. Then pour your cleaner of choice (CLR, vinegar, etc) into the overflow pipe. give it at least a quart if not more. The plug in the siphon jet will keep the cleaner in the channel without escaping into the bowl. Wait overnight then remove the siphon jet plug and the tape. Clean out the rim jets and siphon jet one last time and give it another try. If this doesn't resolve your issue, you know you've done everything possible to make it work right. At that point it's time for a new toilet. I recommend the Power Flush toilet by Glacier Bay. It's a chair height toilet, elongated seat, slow close lip and power to flush all your troubles away due to it's vacuum-assisted flush mechanism in the tank. I have them in my house and have never had a problem, and for $130 they're a great bargain with everything included to install. Leave a comment on how your project goes. Thank you for watching.

To ensure thorough cleaning in the raceway, take a wad of paper towel and place in a baggie and use it to plug the siphon jet, then pour about 1/2 gal of vinegar down the overflow pipe. The plug in the siphon jet will stop any vinegar from going out into the bowl, and will allow it to fill up the raceway. Then let it sit overnight. The next day remove the tape and clean the rim jets as normal and hopefully all your issues will flush away. Good luck with your project!

@thewoggerswaydiy 9 ай бұрын
I'm guessing you're referring to the Mansfield flush valve I hold up at 4:06 thru 4:13. If holding down the flush handle gets the bowl to flush out but by not holding it you're either getting no flush or a very weak flush, then the bowl isn't getting enough water to it. Either the water level in the tank is not high enough or the flush valve is closing too soon. If the water level is low, try adjusting the float on the fill valve to allow more water into the tank before it shuts off. If the water level is pretty much at peak height I recommend changing out the flush valve. This entails removing the tank from the bowl. I recommend replacing the Mansfield flush valve with the one by Fluidmaster with a flapper (I whow this kit in my video on how to replace a fill valve). If you have a Home Depot near you, you can pick up the kit for around $21 and it includes everything.. flush valve, fill valve, flapper, tank-to-bowl bolts and tank-to-bowl gasket. If you're removing the tank to replace the flush valve you'll probably need to replace the tank bolts also and while you're going that far you might as well replace the fill valve also, since it's included in the kit. I'm a big proponent of this kit and have never had a problem with a toilet flushing properly after installing this flush valve. Have never been a big fan of the Mansfield flush valves. I'm in the process of doing a video on replacing the flush valve but still in the works, which also includes doing the conversion from the Mansfield to the Fluidmaster. Hope this helps you and good luck with your project.

I'm curious. Over the years, I've noticed the "S" shape the water travels down. It seems that has gotten a bit different, as in not as tight of an "S" shape. Does that make a difference in flushing the toilet making things move easier?
@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 5 ай бұрын
if you're referring to the trap built into the toilet from the bowl to the floor flange it may be a slightly less "aggressive" .. with the requirements of saving water in low flush toilets the trap needs to be a little smoother since there's less water to push the waste out of the bowl and up and through the trap. So, yes, it does make the "stuff" move easier, but it needs to be because there's less amount of water being used per flush. It doesn't need a huge amount of water to flush if everything is working as it should and the siphon jet plays a crucial part... the push from the siphon jet gets everything moving, creating a siphon action (hence the name) to move the flush water out. Great question. Thanks for watching.

Usually bubble in your toilet bowl are in indication of poor drainage and/or poor ventilation.. you may have a partial blockage which is why you can flush out.. or you may have an issue in your vent stack not venting your line fully and properly. Only way to know if there is a problem is have a plumber send a camera down the line to see if there are any issues. If you haven't had any issues at all, you can just monitor it and if things change and you start to see backing up, even if temporary or sporadic, or slow draining, then you'll want to have it checked.

the "flakes" could be several things. Could be sediment in your water.. if the toilet is old it could just be build up in the raceway around the rim where the rim jets are that is flaking off and coming out when you flush. If you look in the tank, take a look at the bolts that hold the tank to the bowl (if you have a 2-piece toilet). If they're pretty rusted and corroded, some of the flaking you see could be from them. If there's a lot of curd and sediment in the bottom of the tank it usually means it's coming from your water supply. If the tank is fairly clean but you're still getting the flakes in the bowl then it's most likely coming from the raceway around the rim. If you have a siphon jet in the bottom of the bowl plug it up and pour some vinegar or CLR down the overflow pipe, after taping off the rim jets, as in the video. Plugging the siphon jet will allow all the CLR into the raceway. Let it sit overnight then remove the tape, clean out the rim jets and flush a few times, as shown in the video. You may need to do it a few times to really clean out the raceway. If it's a real problem you can see if the owner is willing to replace the toilet. If the issue is in your water supply then about the only solution is a whole house filtration system. Hope this helps and good luck with your project.

Hard to diagnose it online like this but it's possible you have some heavy build up in the rim or siphon jets and when you treated it you created a clear path, but also it loosened up some of that build-up that didn't clear out the first time but after a flush or two it dislodged and caused some blockage again. If it's an old toilet that may be a possibility. Try treating it again, but this time plug up the siphon jet also.. just can put some paper towels in a ziplock baggie and plug up the siphon jet... this will keep all of the CLR or vinegar in the system without going into the bowl. Let it sit for 24 hrs and then do another poke and prodding to clean out all the holes and see how your performance is. As long as everything else in the toilet is working properly and you get the rim and siphon jets cleaned out you shouldn't have an issue. If it's an old toilet and you still have problems, then it may be time to change out your toilet. Good luck with your project and keep us informed on the outcome.

The water level in the bowl seems quite low. Any way to adjust that?
@thewoggerswaydiy
@thewoggerswaydiy 8 ай бұрын
the water level in your bowl is going to be regulated by the amount of water put out by the fill valve into the overflow tube in the tank, and the height of the trap built into the toilet. You can slowly pour water into the bowl until it stops rising. That'll be the limit as allowed by the trap. If the level in the bowl after flushing is the same, then that's as much as you will get. If the level in the bowl after flushing is less than that then you're not getting enough water from the fill valve into the overflow tube to fill the bowl. That could be because you have an adjustment clamp on the fill hose, which you can remove or adjust, or the fill valve is shutting off too soon because it needs to be adjusted to allow more water into the tank, which in turn will allow more water into the bowl, because the fill valve is running longer (but this is regulated by the height of your overflow tube and if the fill valve is positioned correctly. Yo can see my video on proper fill valve adjustment at kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6HGq55mpL-dq5I ), or it's possible the overflow tube was just cut too short so the fill valve is not running long enough before shutting off. All components have to be correctly installed and properly adjusted so everything works as it should. Hope this helps. Good luck with your project.

So you put duct tape around all the rim jets, the poured in CLR, waited an hour, removed the tape, but NO CLR came out. I assume it leaked out??? What happened to it? Thanks!

A little filming mishap.. apparently the camera wasn't running when I removed the tape so used a little directorial license and put some tape back on for the filming. Also, you won't get much coming out since much of it will "escape" out through the siphon jet into the bowl. One thing I didn't include in the video was how to retain more of the cleaner in the raceway. Just take some paper towels and wad them up and put into a baggie and use the baggie to plug the siphon jet. That will keep more of the cleaner in the raceway for the rim jets and the pathway to the siphon jet. Thanks for watching and observing my filming boo-boo, Good luck with your projects.

White vinegar is safer and is as efficient as CLR. You just need to let it sit for a few more hours.

True, and for a homeowner with the time that's an alternative, but when you're on a service call, time is money and we need to complete the job as quickly as possibly to keep the costs down to the customer. Thanks for the input and good luck with your projects.

@@thewoggerswaydiy Thank you for your answer. I agree that CLR is very convenient for professionnels but because most of your viewers are homeowners I thought they could be interested to know white vinegar is a safer alternative to CLR.

to help keep more of the vinegar or cleaner in the raceway wad up some paper towels and place in a baggie to use as a plug in the siphon jet. This will prevent the cleaner from running out through the siphon jet and more will stay in the raceway. let it sit overnight then flush and clean out all the rim jets and siphon jet. Good luck. Hope it clears up.. otherwise may be time for a new toilet

This is what happens when I block all of the BS channels seeking views by trolling, from auto detailers to fake politics to over inflated issues that don't effect me at all. Toilet maintenance! But its all good. I have been a professional handyman and model builder for 19 years and there is no end to learning until one hits the grave.

I'd think it is cheaper and better by replacing the old two valves with new ones..

Replacing the fill and flush valves won't solve your problem if the siphon and rim jets are clogged. Need to get as much water into the bowl as fast as possible for a good flush. Good luck with your projects.

@@thewoggerswaydiy That is true! But replacing old valves should be done first, I'd think. 🙂

My toilet is relatively new. Two years old and it did not flush in once in one go from the start. I cannot get to the tank as it is in the wall.

Hi. Did you install it yourself or have a plumber do it? If a plumber, have you contacted them with your concerns? What was their answer? If you want to send me a pic of the toilet and if you know the brand and model, you can email it all to my attention at customerservice@woggers.com and I'll see if I can give you any suggestions to help. Also let me know where you're located (city/state or country if outside of USA). Thank you and good luck with your project.
