I mainly watch and listen to LOTR and related Tolkien KZbin videos to calm my mind in preparation for sleep. It helps to put my mind in another world which is necessary for relaxation.

Would love a talk on the “Books of Lost Tales”. Been gifted them for Christmas, and the forward says they are the first writings Tolkien wrote within that universe. And it’s a quite strange placement given the Lore.

In regards to not being interested in certain parts of the book when you first read it is very relatable. I remember not caring about the poems whatsoever, as well as Bombadil. I watched a few classes on poetry and once I understood how brilliant Tolkien's songs and poems were, I much more appreciated them, especially how he changes the complexity and meter of poems and songs based on the different cultures and races in the story. I watched Corey Olson do about 7 or 8 hours on the Tom Bombadil chapters, and I once again started to love those parts much more. I do wish I came to these conclusions without the aid of a teacher or classroom setting but either way the end result is a deeper appreciation.

When I hear Phil Dragash perform these songs, poems and characters like Tom and Treebeard; I have a whole new appreciation for them. When I first read the Fellowship, the first fifty pages were slow going. Now I love that section and find it humorous and delightful.

@@chattylumpkin the older I get I find myself reading from the beginning of fellowship to the end of the council of Elrond the most, I love the Shire parts, farmer Maggot, the old Forest, Bombadil and Bree, it's very charming and humourous, it also sets up the rest of the story beautifully, thanks for replying.

@@alexshadowfax1119 Me too. I first heard of LOTR in the seventies when I was in high school. It was something of a cultural phenomena in the sixties and older brothers and sisters introduced younger siblings to the story. So when the Ralph Bakshi films came out, a bunch of us were excited to see it. It fell flat I'm afraid and we went away thinking that the books could not be adapted to screen. So for all the complaints about Peter Jackson's films; I have seen worse. 😀 I've never heard any bands do music from LOTR; but again I've heard worse. And now you have too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHSWZpaHgK2qsMk

@@chattylumpkin Thank you for the Spock music video, I immediately sent it to my Father in law, He grew up watching the original star trek series. Im a TNG guy myself just because it was always on at my house since I was 2 years old and it first aired. The Spock Baggins ballad is bizarre to me since I grew up in the 90s but there is an innocence and charm to it that I enjoy.

@@alexshadowfax1119 It's so incredibly goofy for this day and age. 😃Somebody thought doing a mash-up pf Spock/Bilbo was a good idea in the sixties. Well, it was a different time. It is amusing to see it from an historical context. Of course, things have changed quite a bit and the sky is the limit now. I remember seeing Peter Jackson's Fellowship in the theater and the worst bit was the end where Aragorn fights the Urukaki and stabs him in the stomach. I was making involuntary grossed out noises and everyone in the theater could hear me reacting. I didn't realize it until the whole place burst out laughing.

Yes please to a feature video of Tom Bombadil! He's an enignma and I'd like to hear other impressions and opinions of him. Something struck me, when reading Frodo's description of him was his great yellow boots. What are "great boots" and I wondered what they look like. Here comes some tinfoil... he doesn't say so, but did Tolkien give Tom seven league boots, given how quickly he appears to rescue Frodo from the barrow wight? Seven league boots figure in some European fplklore.

Alex has a point. The Internet has made people's attention span shorter. Maybe listening to audiobooks little by little might help. Reading is best, of course.

Man alive, has it, ever! I grew up in the Dark Ages, Before Internet. Yes, we still exist. I know for certain my attention span has shortened and continues to do so. I hate it and I try to actively fight it by reading more and trying to cut down my internet usage. I'm not always succeeding, but I am trying.

Sauron was aware of Shelob but I doubt Men knew of her, unless they discovered her while the Gondorians possessed Minas Ithil.

My biggest problem with the PJ films is the degradation of the characters. Denethor II was more than a mad tomato chomper, Théoden could lead his own people, unfortunately the list goes on and on.
@istari0

That's my biggest issue as well. Almost none of the characters are less than they are in the books. Aragorn is the one that most bothers me.

@@istari0 yeah I'd say Frodo and Aragorn are easily at the top of that list. But the Hobbits are the main characters in my mind, and their characters are all screwed in the films by the plot changes.

😀 I remember seeing the Ralph Bakshi films when they first came into the cinema, (Yes, I'm a Gammer.) Then the First Star Wats movies and thinking - I can't wait until this technology catches up to LOTR. Then 20 years later or so, Peter Jackson's films. There are a lot of changes from the books and I spent a lot of time on the appendices/production documentaries. I basically love it for what it is, warts and all.

Maybe Gandalf had a premonition about Moria that was similar to Jesus' premonition of what would happen to him on the Cross.

29:00 Gandalf's desire to enter Moria is actually the manifestation in the reality of Arda that the melody that Gandalf added to the music during the performance of the Music of the Ainur and the melody added to the music by Durin's Bane, the Balrog, intersect, intertwine and are influenced by each other. This is just an example from Gandalf-Balrog. Every part of mythology is actually hidden in this music. For this reason, I do not think that Gandalf's choice was due to his free will. He fulfills the role assigned to him in accordance with the music. It cannot move otherwise. 51:20 I think we can't agree on this because of our definition of free will. To me, free will must be absolutely independent of God. Otherwise, the choices are just an illusion.

"Snowboard" would have been way more appropriate. They said "skateboard" for the very same reasons they hate action Jackson. Also, hold this: "and lo! In the darkness of Mordor my hope rose." Who fn says that...
