Honestly, with all this research you do, thorough, passionate, interesting and creative, I believe you deserve an honorary title of Tolkien scholar. I know, technically you to be a scholar one must have a degree in the subject and you probably don’t (unless you do?:), but I genuinely believe you would deserve that simply on your level of knowledge and analysis of Tolkien’s mythology. I mean, whether you have it or not it doesn’t matter, what you do is incredible, but I believe you deserve that calling:)

I've never called myself a scholar since it seems like such a lofty title but there are plenty of others who are called it who certainly don't have degrees in anything Tolkien related. I think a 'scholar' can also be someone with a desire to learn and study to a deep level in any subject, someone who offers researched analysis, etc. I'm happy enough if people like what I put out and don't compare it to those who just copy and paste other peoples thoughts or Tolkien Gateway.

2:37:34: My thought about the possibility of The Tale of Earendil being a fourth "great tale" comes from this in Tolkien Gateway's synopsis of the 2018 _The Fall of Gondolin:_ "They were journeying into a new story, the Tale of Eärendel, which Tolkien never wrote, but which is sketched out in this book from other sources." Meanwhile, in _The Book of Lost Tales Part Two,_ the six chapters are "The Tale of Tinuviel", "Turambar and the Foaloke", "The Fall of Gondolin", "The Nauglafring", "The Tale of Earendil", and "The History of Eriol or Aelfwine". So that hints at The Tale of Earendil (and maybe even the story of the Nauglamir?) having been meant to be equal in literary stature to the three great tales. Whereas I don't know if the same can be said of Of the Return of the Noldor or The Fifth Battle/Battle of Unnumbered Tears having ever been planned to be tales unto themselves. I'm less curious about The Tale of Earendil for his voyage to Aman than I am his previous voyages around Middle-earth. Like a note about him slaying Ungoliant, and "Driven south. Dark regions. Fire mountains. Tree-men. Pygmies. Sarqindi or cannibal-ogres."

We already know who Tom Bombadil is; why do people bring him up again and again? He is a beloved figure from an earlier creation predating Middle-earth as we’ve come to know it. That’s why he’s “Eldest” and does not appear to fit into the usual categories. He doesn’t share a “root” with the Ring and that and his unconcerned, unselfish nature suffice to explain why he’s unaffected by it. Goldberry is a slighlty bigger mystery in that she could as easily be another transplant (more likely since she shares Tom Bombadil’s literary origins) as a Maia (not implausible - whereas Tom as a Maia feels “off”). I guess my question is: why’s that not enough? Just accept that it’s all stories told by hobbits and it’ll work out somehow…

I think because people, in general, want definitive answers - they don't like mystery or unknowns, which is a shame. When most people ask what Tom Bombadil is they want a "He is this type of being" answer, which I will never give. I prefer talking about his place in the world and story rather than boxing him in to some category.

I thought you were talking about Arctic summer early in the vid. I tried to rewatch it multiple times for context but i never caught it. 48° doesn't seem anywhere near artic / antarctic circle

@@steveblanmag7410 That's not his real latitude, he was joking. That's the latitude of Point Nemo - the oceanic pole of inaccessibility.
