This was a tough call because Liam Neeson was also great in SCHINDLER'S LIST and SCHINDLER was clearly the better film. But Tom Hanks's performance in PHILADELPHIA was the first time a major star showed the face of AIDS in all its horror and still managed to capture the hearts of the audience. God bless you Mr Hanks.

As the granddaughter of a man who's sisters slip him to that train when he was 13 and who's sister gave her NAME to another girl who was sick so she could be saved and ended up staying imprisoned in the ghetto for 8 more months, I can tell you that this movie, as good as it may be, disrespects the real heroes of the story which are the survivors. My grandfather didn't want to go on that train. He didn't want to leave his family behind and he was terrified because his sisters couldn't tell him that this train was there to bring him back to life and safety because if they did they would've risked exposing the entire plan so he thought that his sisters (which he haven't seen for 4 years before that brief reunion, by the way) were basically sending him away to die. He was sure that it was the same train he'd heard of, the train that'll take you to your final destination. Can you imagine how that must've felt for a child? They never deal with that in the movie, they chose to focus on the angel saving the poor Jewish people when in fact, and incredible as he actually was, don't get me wrong, the thousands of warriors he put on the list were the ones who saved their voice to talk to the god they weren't even sure was there anymore instead of being the focus and playing god themselves. So yeah, I actually think Philadelphia was the right choice.

Tom Hanks' charisma is almost presidential in scale. This acceptance speech is so unbelievably powerful and profound that it literally takes my breath away and wells my eyes with tears of pure awe at this incredible man's honest, unflinching, thought provoking and life-affirming portrayal of a person's reality of living with one of the most disastrous and ruthless diseases to have ever afflicted humanity. Tom's movie performance was a universal one, that transcends HIV and AIDS - it was also moral lesson in the importance of equality, empathy, acceptance and ultimately humanity at its most fundamental level. His acceptance speech is among the greatest set of words ever to have been spoken in the English language. I'm blown away... Chris (UK).

Faroukh Diakhaby Why stress.. he was still fabulous and has won Oscars prior, later.. Tom is undeniably one of the best.. and I agree he was terrific in Philadelphia... I get mad when people say it's a racial thing.. I don't believe that.. I think that just some years other actors did just so outstanding... it would be bullshit if someone wasn't nominated because the color of there skin.. That's apparent...that I do not agree w.. but honestly, I really don't think it has anything to do w that!
@manuginobilisbaldspot424
@manuginobilisbaldspot424 7 жыл бұрын
First off, Denzel would've been nominated for Supporting Actor. Second, IDGAF what you get 'mad' at. It's always a racial thing in America. Because America was BUILT on racial things. There's a division of culture and economics because of racial things. So while your premise is that it's not overt racism, you ignore the reality that if white people have created the structures, which means white people get to select who they have representing those structures, it stands to reason that white people are going to consciously or unconsciously choose their own people for a variety of seemingly harmless but nevertheless, damaging reasons for people who are not white. I'm over white people who refuse to see things out of a prism only than their own and want to act aggrieved at the mere trial of having to HEAR someone else's viewpoint. Fuck you two times.

This movie was shown to me by my parents when I was young, because they thought it would help me start to see multiple sides to an ongoing debate that seemingly had only one side to it. I'm a gay 16 year old boy and I saw Philadelphia for the first time earlier this year. The film inspired me to come out publicly at school, and I've been so much happier since. Regardless of the now old age of this film, it changed my life drastically for the better. It holds a very dear place in my heart and I know that holds true for many others like me. It gives me faith in humanity and myself, knowing that a kind, wonderful, loved actor is there to support those like me who often find ourselves without support. Thank you Tom, you are the perfect image and example of a perfect man. We love you!

How foolish you make your selves look. Still convinced that dinosaurs never roamed the earth. With hatefulness and bashing ways, but claim to spread the love of the lord onto all. I'll shake your hand, and tell you that you were a product of your environment as I walk past you, thru the gates into the kingdom of our God, where love and understanding and respect and tolerance are not options. you've lived in them your entire life. Or else, much like you. You will forever be stuck in limbo, still unable to accept the true word of the lord. may we all pray that your children have a hope of growing some tolerance and knowledge and not live there lives in ignorance. for you. it's too late.

I don't recall which movie it was that I went to see with my wife. I do remember that when we got there the theater was full and so we decided to watch the other movie available at that particular hour which was Philadelphia. Luckily there were 2 seats available, the last 2 seats and so we grabbed them. Aside from Tom and Denzel and Antonio's display of what a great actor is all about, the thing I remember the most is the amount of ppl all around us weeping throughout the movie all the way to the end and then outside too. I have never been so glad to have arrived late at a movie theater. Regards to my kid brother who died of AIDS back in 1997 at the age of 37. RIP kiddo.

You guys have to remember that at the time Philadelphia came out, the AIDS epidemic was at its peak. Before 1995, when effective treatments became available for those who were HIV positive, if you or anyone you knew contracted AIDS, it was still a death sentence. Tom Hanks' performance in that movie goes to show that at the end of the day, tolerance, no matter what, still exists.

It's strange when I watch Hanks here. Though he's genuinely grateful, notice how he keeps looking in Neeson's direction... I get the vice that he feels like he just robbed Liam and probably think he deserved it more than he did. That said, still a fine speech, and he did well in Philadelphia.

After watching this film at the cinema I sat in a McDonalds and wept. I could tell that I wasn't the only one affected by it. We had all left the cinema in a shocked silenced. The fear of that disease was written all over our faces. Whilst sitting there all I could think about as I looked at the people around me (still with a look of dread on their faces as they were queuing for food) was that one day we will all be at the bedside of a loved one (or they at ours) while they lie there dying like Andrew Beckett. The thought of such a future broke my heart.

I remember seeing Tom Hanks on Inside the Actor's Studio talking about Philadelphia. Most of the hospital extras had AIDS and had passed by the time the film came out. He reflected on talking to a man, dying, who spoke about how much he loved his job - making noodles. He teared up talking about it, it was nice to see how much on an impact the film still had on him.

Tom Hanks gave a fine performance in Philadelphia, but Liam Neeson's performance was superior. His acting range, character immersion, and development were all better than those of Tom Hanks. And I don't understand why Daniel Day-Lewis' acting is overlooked here; I realize he has been rewarded for his performances, but his acting was incredible in In the Name of the Father.

Tom Hanks character in Philadelphia evoked more empathy from me than any character I've seen in a film since. Plus, the issue the film tackled was very taboo in major production films. His performance was magnified by the director and his supporting cast but that film and the way it was shot put his performance in a spotlight brighter than Liam's. Think about the time this film was made, the taboo-ness and the disease it highlighted... I'm a straight male who was raised in a homophobic household but Tom's performance... He made me feel sympathy and empathy for a gay man in a time when homosexuality was NOT embraced in public. I give all the props in the world to his performance.

I know one of those angel’s names. He was my uncle. A gay man who left us too early because of AIDS. This movie broke my heart, because I know he heard a lot of awful things people said to him. They said those things to me too. His memory was tied to pain for 25 years. Until a week ago when my wife and I welcomed a baby to our family. His name is Gordon - after my uncle.
