Tom and Mike have such an awesome understanding and depth of the blues. For any band to rock this hard this later in their career is mind boggling. Most musicians/ bands this far in their careers are either dead/ have quit the industry/ radically changed their initial sound. And here you have Tom n' the boys doing what they still love to do--amps on ten and still channeling the energy of what got 'em into music in the first place.

This song is so fucking bad ass. They’re in a sick sick groove man. They were recording the entire album there in their practice space somewhere in the Valley. 1-2 takes per song and that’s it. On the album. Done. Kinda exactly like they recorded earlier in their careers. They tried to get everyone playing in a perfect groove and catch it all in the studio session, and god damn if they didn’t do just that. Until Jeff Lynne, that is. He likes to use the studio as an instrument 🎻, so starting on Full Moon Fever and through Great Wide Open and Let Me Up, I’ve Had Enough, I believe. Then back to the whole band recording most of the songs with layers of guitars and other things like additional drum tracks and piano layers plus always more guitars, Tom loved to layer multiple guitars on his stuff. That started again with Wildflowers and Rick Rubin who produced and preferred recording everyone together. Petty and Mike Campbell loved to experiment with the studio equipment for effects and it’s in the music, they could master any style of recording. 40 fucking years and not one bad song imho. The last album was right up there with the best of the rest. Room at the Top was one of his best I think and that was Echo which he hated for years because it was such a bummer time for him and most of the other dudes in the band, he was getting divorced and they were all going through some kind of personal shit but Tom’s new wife, Dana got him to listen to Echo again and thank god because he started playing Room At The Top and a couple others from the album in rotation for live sets, like the 20 night stand at the Fillmore and another long engagement a few years later plus something like that in New York at Madison Square Garden possibly??? Actually I think the NY stuff was somewhere else but whatever, amazing stuff. You can see lots of the Fillmore stuff here on KZbin, look for Walls and Room At The Top where Tom is wearing a white long sleeve button down and that’s the Fillmore. If you dig around you can find a ton of “bootleg” entire shows, I’ve downloaded a dozen or more concerts, pretty cool especially considering.... He will be missed man but he is the best kind of immortal. Unlike the kind of immortal dRumpf is gonna be.
