When this song was newly released, they used to play this video on MTV all the time. This was a time when MTV played music videos. I was 14 and this was my introduction to Tom Petty. I thought this song (and video) were just about the coolest thing ever. Now I'm seeing it again for the first time in over a quarter century. I think it's pretty much the coolest thing ever.

In 1982, when this music video was released, there was a lot of focus on "Time Capsules" - Leaving a legacy of modern technology for future genreations to uncover. We were so proud of our accomplishments in computing, as depicted in video games, that it was heartbreaking when Tom of the future didn't care, and pushed the video game over, twirling his gun victoriously. That was a powerful lesson. No matter what you accomplish, there going to be a future generation who just doesn't give a damn.

I think the story of the video was that an unseen alien threat has devastated the earth, leaving a handful of survivors left to fight them. That's why Tom gave that pained squint at the video of aliens attacking buildings in LA at 2:37, and why he took his symbolic revenge on the space invaders by toppling the video game at the end.

I was 11 years old when I first saw this music video on MTV, in the very early days of the station. Your household needed one of those huge metal satellite dishes to receive the channel, and we were lucky enough to have one. (My dad worked in television). "You Got Lucky" has remained one of my all time favorite videos all through the decades. The cyberpunk aesthetic & dystopian setting - combined with arcade games and incredible rock music - was like a perfect intersection of all my favorite preteen things. On July 15, 2017 I was lucky to see the legend Tom Petty perform in Toronto, Canada. Rest easy, MadDog, and Long Live Rock & Roll.

I will never forget rushing home from school so my sister and I could watch MTV. I was in 6th grade and she was a freshman. Back in those days we only had 1 TV a big console in the living room. MY dad worked the 3 to 11 shift. SO mom would let us watch TV for 1 hour before doing homework. This video is one of the first I remember. That was so cool and life was much more simple then. This video and John Couger Jack@Diane, and oh Mickey your so fine, and Michael Jackson BEET IT was some of the first videos. WHAT a great time to be young. The 80s were a great decade to be young. I really miss that time of my life. AND MTV was awesome when they showed videos all the time. And even better the late 80s we would all get drunk and smoke weed and go to my buddies house on Saturday night just to watch HEAD BANGERS BALL. YOU would see all the new videos of hard rock. That decade was the best time to be young. Sex-drugs@Rock-n-ROLL.!!!!!---MTV WAS THE 80S. RIP MTV 80S STYLE!!!!

Barry Alkire Hey Barry I was going to comment on this vid but then I saw your post and figured....Well Barry pretty much covered all the bases ...Lol...Very well.said my friend , And your Absolutely right ...The 80s were such a great time to grow up , and just like my parents who had a great era to grow up in ...My father always describes his neighborhood just like a scene out of A Bronx Tale, ( GREAT ERA TO BE A KID)..Stick Ball in the streets ,Robbing the fruit truck and meeting the milk man on the front steps so he could run back upstairs to have his cereal!!!...Lol..... Sadly I dont think our children will be able to say the same thing ...I mean every generation looks back on the years they grew up in with fond and nostalgic memories but I really don't think our kids will be able to look back on their formative years and really be able to say ...That they too grew up in a great era... Everything you said I and a whole generation of kids can most definitely relate to...The 2 vids I would wait to see is Van Halen's Unchained and So this is love ..Those 2 live concert vids really captured what a concert looked ,sounded and SMELLED like ...LOLOL....Hey Barry I have talked to many people who can relate to your comment cause they too also lived it and I always ask them , what part of the country were you from...So Im thinking the same thing about you and your sis ...So East Coast , West, Middle of the country ???.... Where did you guys grow up Brother???... Take Care My Friend

Head bangers ball was even on in the 80's?? Who hosted it? pinfield? Had no idea! I grew up watching MTV in the early 90's and loved it, had the same experiences!! they always still played all the 80's hit videos I was raised on along with the new... VH1 was also great back then! I still remember when VH1 had this big event when they played every single music video in their archive existence my dad went out and bought a stack of nice expensive vhs tapes to record them all, took an entire week for vh1 to play them all 0-Z and my dad had everyone in the family on a crazy recording schedule for the whole week with no playing my new super Nintendo on the one wooden TV in the house!!

Nick Hall Nick Headbangers ball was or wasn't on in the 80s?,..I think you meant to type wasn't on in the 80s ... Headbangers ball was on in the 80s , think it started in 87 or 88

So many great hits Tom had. What a shock to learn he had died of an OD and was only 66 years old. He really helped define the 70s/80s with those songs. I remember seeing this on MTV all the time. What a wonderful era that was. God bless Tom Petty.

He had a hairline fracture in his hip that he did not take time out to take care of it. So....he tried in vain to cover up the pain of this injury with pain pills. Hence the over dose. Sad thing to happen. so many rockers have succumbed to Drug OD's.

*_I can still think back to 1982 when I saw this video on MTV. They played it every hour on the hour. It was pretty much programmed into my brain . My friend that lived next door actually looked almost exactly like Tom and even his mom used to joke around that if he didn't quit goofing around all the time she was going to send him to Tom Petty with a note saying "This is your child, good luck._*
