In this video Kenny Sharretts explores two different tom tuning intervals to see how they affect the tom sound when recording with the Yamaha EAD10. Although useful for any method of recording of drums, these tips will definitely help you hone the tom sound you want from your EAD10 recordings. Headphone listening highly recommended.

The EAD 10 is one of the coolest drum devices to come out in a LONG time. Very powerful and well thought out unit. Kudos to Yamaha. Kenny, excellent video, as always. I look forward to hearing more. All the best, safe travels on the road. Cheers.

This is the first video I've ever seen regarding interval tuning on drums! I figured that out on my own some odd years back in high school and my toms have always sounded great. I still do it to this day! Finally someone who can actually explain the details about it! Thanks for the video!

Yes the toms sound better for sure. I haven't found it possible to set up a 5 piece, and hear my L crash. When I go to your configuration, my ride becomes overwhelming. Have you ever tried using the EAD for an OH, room, or with your interface? You're videos have really helped btw
@KennySharretts

First of all thank you for the kind words, and for watching. For the 5piece I recommend tilting the gain up 2 tics on the L mic. I feel you on the 4 piece, and yes. A lot of my vids I’ll feathered the EAD 10 in raw as a room mic. I just filter out the lowest frequencies. Thank you again, and please note Super Thanks is now available on my channel 🙏

When listening through headphones, I can hear a slight flam (almost like a really quick slap back) from the rack tom. I don't hear it in the Snare, kick, or floor tom.
@KennySharretts
@KennySharretts 6 жыл бұрын
TalkShowHost lol I know. It’s not a trigger. I included no triggered sounds on the toms. We decided it was either a cable rattling from the other mics we used on later videos, the actual 1/4” on the trigger jack was rattling against the shell (I did tighten it up during shooting), OR just a slap back in the room that we didn’t hear in the other mics. Since it’s more pronounced on the inverted 3rd tuning it could also be how the mic was hearing the interval via the slap back, but it’s a pretty pronounced sound.

Kenny what a great video! I just picked up an EAD10 for use on live gigs with my DW Frequent Flyer. I like the way the 4th Intervals sounded! What do you recommend for a middle of the road rock/pop tuning interval for the tops and bottoms of my 12 rack and 14 floor that will work nice with the EAD10? I use Remo Emp top / Amb bottom. Keep rockin!

You plug the usb out cable into your computer. The EAD can serve as your audio engine for 2 tracks of L/R audio and 2 tracks of midi or you can use the audio out to go to a different interface,but still track midi via usb.

Kenny, love the videos! Have helped me immensely! I have a Ludwig Classic Maple 24, 13, 16, 18 and it sounds amazing, but I have this long sustain on the 18. The tone is pure and I have had nothing but praise from FOH on the sound, just that it lasts awhile. In your opinion, what reso head would help with that? I use coated G2's and have ran clear G1's on bottoms, but was thinking of reso7 or glass. Thanks in advance!
@KennySharretts
@KennySharretts 5 жыл бұрын
Bryan Dixon First of all thank you for the kind words. Secondly Thx for watching🤗🤗Yes Reso 7’s will help a lot. Still great tone/sustain, but a bit more controlled. Also try a spread out cotton ball like in this vid I made. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXbZnZmNecadgtU It will cut the sustain just a wee bit, and help with sympathetic resonance. If you need more you could possibly a small tape tent on the reso head. I made a vid for properly muting a drum with gaff tape as well.

just above soup to med tight tends to give pretty good response no matter what. Ultra low, or high tunings take a touch of fine adjustment, but they do well there as well. You get the most out of the settings adjustment.Thanks for watching, and commenting.

Jacob Friedman I have a set of the Vic Firth and of Big Bang’s metro phones. Both are really great, but I enjoy the comfort of the metrophones. In general I use my UE IEM’s, but I also know sometimes my canals are a bit sore so I’ll use my headphones.

Hey Kenny, great video as usual. Do you find the ride to be too loud using that 1-up, 1-down setup? I started using that with my EAD10, but ended up going back to the 2-up (or even 3-up) 1-down setup with much better results. I will confess though that I haven't spent too much time tweaking the mics yet. I've also been using the Compression patch for most of my applications.
@KennySharretts
@KennySharretts 6 жыл бұрын
I'm about to do my full setup 2 up 1 down. LOL!! Yes the ride is a bit omni-present in the mix, and yes having 2 toms in place really shapes the mix up nicely. I've been going nuts with it so more videos to come.

Ditto. I thought about putting something between the ride and the mic to be able to go back to a 4-piece config. Haven’t gotten around to try it yet. With 2 up it does sound pretty good though.

There's two mics in the EAD, in settings you can adjust the input for each mic (lower on ride side). Your issue was one of the reasons for this design feature. I recommend playing in settings a bit. Cheers.

drumtravelfun totally great comment. I shot this video with the EAD straight out of the box. I wanted to see how it sounded with zero programming on the mic so the toms were “even “. I love experimenting with adjusting the levels, but ya go to really listen to make sure the recording still “sounds balanced” .

Sorry, I have a question! Do I need additional triggers on toms for have a sound like this or only to add some external sample as in the final part of the video? Thank you
@KennySharretts
@KennySharretts 5 жыл бұрын
If you record into your DAW you can add samples over what the mic records, but if you want Tom sounds on a muted head you will need triggers. Here it’s a blend of the EAD 10 samples with Native Instruments Abbey road samples added in via the midi I recorded via the triggers.

Have you had any trouble with the kick drum trigger not triggering a sound? Mine worked perfectly for a couple weeks, then I got a snare trigger hooked up, and the kick stopped working... @@KennySharretts so I've got some pinstripes on them now, and they sound ok, but I'm wondering if it's a fiberglass thing for them to sound a little more open and less punchy. I play lot of different styles (pop, reggae,country,rock and roll) I wonder if I'm just more used to the sound of wooden drums.

Hi do you have a video where you use DT50s triggers on the toms? I'm thinking about doing this using input 5 & 6 for my rack and floor tom to boost my live sound on acoustic kit. Thanks

Elred77 I have a series using mesh heads, and Black Holes, but all those are designed for that specific situation. HOWEVER, the settings I adjusted will give you ideas to fine tune your DT50s. I will say they work great in that capacity, and if you start with the preset in the EAD10 for the DT50s you will be able to dial a solid trigger response quickly. Brendan sorry I missed this. Check any of my recent tuning videos on snares. You will find great intervals that may help you find the sound you want. Just FYI I tuned a 6.5” x 14” to a B flat/F for Jason Bonham while I was out with Train and he sat in to do some Zeppelin. He loved it for that style of music. My drummer with Train loved it so much he kept it there going forward. Right up the middle sir. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
