David Toma spoke at my high school in New Hampshire around 1983 or so. Powerful speaker: LOUD and foul-mouthed. Passionate. Pulled zero punches. What an incredible (and tragic) life he had.

David Toma came to our HS back in 1982 to tell us about the dangers of drugs. I can call my ex girlfriend right now and she will tell you because of him she NEVER DID DRUGS. His message was not in vain.

TOMA was the blueprint for both THE ROCKFORD FILES and BARETTA.

Literally, in the case of Baretta. Musante only agreed to do one season. Huggins and Cannell agreed, thinking that if it was a hit, he'd of course renew his contract. He didn't! So the basic "man of disguises" character hook was carried over and the show re-worked for Robert Blake. In the case of Garner and Rockford, that was more of a Maverick-style con man implementation.

This theme by Carpenter and Post had a streetwise swagger their other themes lacked.

Same here! That show should have lasted longer than it did, but then, we wouldn't have had Baretta if Toma had never aired.

My memory is that Al Pacino became a star from the first “Godfather” film and then starred in “Serpico”, which was based on a real-life NYC policeman. After that movie was also successful, this TV series was created, which had a similar backstory.

To Kelly Franklin:Series star Tony Musante quit the show after the 1st season as I recall. He didn't want to be typecast & doing a weekly series. Also he wanted to do appeances on other shows such as Police Story & Medical Story.ABC retooled it & it became Baretta which gave Robert Blake one of his better known roles & an Emmy for best lead actor in a dramatic series.

A great crime drama that stood out from other cop shows at the time (1973/74). Nick Nolte played a small part in ' *The Friends of Danny Beecher* ', as a friend of Danny Beecher who killed a cop that killed his girlfriend.
