Your reality is not what you think it is. Everyday, you move through and see the experiences of life with a filter. This filter? It’s your own perspective. Now is the time for you to recognize and become self-aware of this perspective, rid yourself of it, and actually begin to change your life for good.
On this episode of Impact Theory, Tom Bilyeu is joined by New York Times Bestselling Author, speaker, and urban philosopher Gary Bishop to discuss such matters and more as they explore how to finally wake up to the reality you’ve fabricated for yourself, break the chains of your perspective which can hold you back, and start to walk on a path towards the person, life, and reality you want to live.
They discuss how we each create our own reality from our experiences, how to become self-aware so that you can recognize patterns in your life, why we create false narratives for ourselves, how to become reborn and renewed into a new person, why you shouldn’t require others to change for you, and how to deal with the challenging fundamentals of life such as success, grief, and love.
SHOW NOTES:
Reality | Gary reveals how we create our own reality and experiences. [0:18]
Self-Awareness | Gary shares how to be truly aware of and connected to yourself. [2:55]
Realizations | Gary shares his own story and journey to becoming self-aware. [5:33]
Narrative | Gary reveals how to break away from the narrative you built for yourself. [9:09]
Reborn | Gary reveals how to be in control and re-craft your perspective. [12:10]
Renew | Gary shares an incredible story of renewing his relationship with his mother. [16:47]
Change | Gary reveals why you have to live without requiring others to change. [23:01]
Creation | Gary discusses why who you are isn’t just an accident, it’s a creation. [25:10]
Self-Help | Gary shares his journey of writing in a way that actually helps others. [28:43]
Pursuit | Gary peels back the curtain on how our life’s experiences [35:06]
Fundamentals | Gary reveals the fundamentals of life that we get lost and trapped in. [39:04]
Success | Gary reveals how the false idea of success is fed to us our whole lives. [42:00]
Love | Gary reveals how the only type of real love is unconditional love. [44:41]
Connect | Gary shares how you can learn more and continue to hear from him. [52:37]
QUOTES:
“Your perspective is in everything you hear, everything you see, everything you say, everything you experience, every feeling, every emotion, you know, all of it. That’s your perspective and it’s hard to see it because you’re in it. So you can’t really witness it.” [7:28]

“I think what you’re witnessing is this kind of bankruptcy of your persona. Like, who’ve you’ve come to know yourself as no longer works, right? And it’s the same shit and no matter how hard you shake that tree, you’re only ever getting one apple.” [27:28]
“…and part of being a loving human being is, what’s also on the table, is something called disappointment.” [48:13]

OMG! One of the BEST, if not THE BEST, most insightful guests, ever! I'm only 5 mins. in, and his opening statement about...why are we not following what we know is 'good' for us - well then, maybe our 'game' in life is to set up a struggle! Maybe that's our 'game' and we don't even know it! YIKES! That struck a nerve! I have often felt that I shoot myself in the foot and covertly set up challenges, i.e. struggles for myself - exactly like his analogy - about why someone who knows saving $ is good for them, but they don't DO it - Why? Maybe they are creating a struggle for themselves, maybe that's their game. I think I do this - completely unknowingly at the time- just to 'mix things up' and get away from the boredom that is my life. Just this one concept of Gary's has been a real AHA moment for me. Returning to the full interview right now, and already know I'll be gobbling up his books 📚. THANKS, TOM!! :))

What he is actually putting into practise is Rational Emotive Therapy. The sooner more people can, instead of blaming, say to themselves: "This is them. This is what they do", the sooner we will all heal!! He's spot on. I know myself, coming from a victim mentality, the only thing that has worked for me, saved me, protected me, is taking personal responsibility. Instead of staying stuck in blame, expecting others to change, or stop their behaviour towards me, (dwelling, lamenting, hating it, trying to fix it as he says) it was taking personal responsibility and adopting strategies to uncover and change my impeding beliefs that worked. Doors opened for me and the seemingly impossible was made possible. It seems a cruel twist of fate but victims do need to change the beliefs that are keeping them as victims. This then changes the entire landscape. Then you will be able to look at any one annoying you, hurting you, and say to yourself, "This is them. This is what they do". And better yet, you find these people or behaviours happen less in your life anyway. I've come to the point now where the likes of bullies or even un-loving people, these days, don't even know that I exist. And those who were borderline, and yet still present in my life, are warmer and more respectful.

Huge fan of Impact Theory. This may be my favorite video yet. The section on the default self & unconditional love really turned on light bulbs in my brain. I remember being in Barnes and Noble and intentionally not buying his book because of the "sensationalized" title. The real truth is that I don't know if I was even ready to receive what was in the book at the time. This video was PERFECT timing. Thank you, Tom & Gary! Great job.

Now she's charging $50 a year for her daily recordings of the lessons in our mailbox...sorta not the same as a lecture. Never heard of DAVID H. - I guess I can Google him to find him. Probably one of the most "practical" self-development authors out there today. I love GJB's candor, his sense of humour, honesty, on top of everything, the beatufiul Scot accent...:) A golden nugget I took away was that "self-growth" or "self-help" is not necessarily done by you sitting by yourself away in the mountains, unscathed by society or "triggers", it's about using what you've learned and practicing it in everyday life, that's the true test.

Agree... all the BAD issues in your life come from the age before ten or so... and until you deal with it, you don't know yourself and cannot really say yes or no, all of it is following those early lessons. Darwin and Freud RULE!! Carl Jung came late, and mostly wrong, I think. Though people who like him and HAVE READ him are also very interesting.

I loved this interview. He is quite good at expressing what he had gone through. Especially the story with his mom at the door, and the following discussion is gold. Exactly, with a single heartfelt conversation doesn't change the whole thing for the other person. Change happens to you. And Tom's summary of "she doesn't have the power over you that you don't let" was dead on point. Confidence and being comfortable in your own skin is the perception game that only you control, nobody has a definitive say in that.

Thanks Gary and Tom for a great conversation In a difficult confusing time in my life right now and this was challenging to hear but yet so insightful in helping me move forward. Favourite quote was at 51:55 “Love in a relationship is the opportunity to express something not get something.”

The first 3 minutes captured me re: our patterns & processes we subconsciously put on repeat & how critical it is to break-free if we want to take our lives next level. Unfortunately.. I didn’t find the guys really looped back to that in terms of actionable steps/take-aways. 😕 Love Gary & Tom + great stories just.. for me missing a little.

I believe his first step was connection and communication: reaching out and relating to others his second step was accountability: addressing where his patterns and traits were in the wrong step 3 was realization of the things he wanted to change and tackling how to do it step 4 taking action and engaging in his life, at this point he just began making the changes in his relationships, in his career whatever he identified he began working on , he may not say it exactly on how to do it but if you listen to his timeliness on how he realized he was unhappy and see how he started working to happiness you can pick up on how he began to change.

Great episode! So happy the show is still going on! I do miss the awesome bio introductions.... they really clue me in to the speaker, when I’m unfamiliar with them, and I end up always learning something new if I do recognize the speaker. I don’t know, that backstory is the icing.

I feel we can unconditionally love people, but whether or not we participate in each other's lives is conditional. If people you love behave abusively, then the healthiest thing for you to do is love them from a great distance. I will always love those who have done me wrong, its just that my love has been altered and is now different. Love is always kind but not to the extent that you disrespect yourself. Forgiveness and love does not mean you have to trust. Not trusting someone you love = altered love.
