April Dannette Gosa -Wyatt Earp, as a lawman, was supposedly tough enough to intimidate the criminals he was known for bringing to justice, though Russell doesn’t show him as tough in anyway more than a Disney-trained actor in Tombstone. But Doc Holliday, both the man and the character played by Val Kilmer, was a noted gunfighter and killer, also known as a card shark, thief and hustler/con man.. Even Ringo was fairly reluctant to confront him and only taunted him when drunk or fought him when enraged beyond his better judgement. The friendship between Holliday and Earp was hard to understand and every movie on the actual events tries to explain how Wyatt Earp could tolerate a friend who was such an unapologetic outlaw. In Tombstone, when Kilmer says Ringo reminds him of himself, he adds, “Now I know I hate him!” He can explain the depth of Ringo’s anger and contempt to Earp because he feels the same way. He (Doc) also hates the world just for being born. He and Ringo are almost doppelgängers. They showed it as they verbally dueled in Latin. They lived on the same level of rage.

Damn! I've watched this movie several times and I never caught that. You're absolutely right, Curly Bill was throwing Wyatts words right back at him. Good call!

This maybe the biggest wrong in movie history. Val Kilmer should have won an Oscar for this role.

Curly Bill knew Johnny was no match for Doc thats why he intervened and went for more stealthier approach for their revenge.

I disagree. I think they were too ignorant to know their own limitations and Ringo had quite the reputation at the time so why wouldn't he think he could beat Doc? I think Curly saw that Ringo was way too drunk and Doc was going to take advantage of it by making the fight right then and there, so he had to stop it.

@@1georgekitchen I agree, Curly saw how trashed Ringo was and Doc was uncommonly sober. Doc didn't look like a man about to fight, he looked like a hawk who sees a rabbit.

If the Cowboys wanted to fully take over Tombstone, Curly Bill needed Ringo's gun handling. Can't afford to lose him before their plans are accomplished.
