Firmware 1.20 fixed several of your complaints including the broadcast meters, shortcuts (1 tap) to mic setting, and global voice effects. Unfortunately, the MixCast still breaks your files into 4GB chunks though which I've found to be super annoying. Excellent video Tom!

Rode needs to release a 1 or 2 channel version. Surprised they haven't already, especially with the pandemic making in-person recording almost impossible. I'm a HUGE TASCAM fan. I guess I have been for a long time. One thing TASCAM has over most manufacturers is they have been makinging all-in-one recording boxes for decades. They kind of invented them with the Portastudios. They still sell the DP24 and DP32, which are specifically made for "outside-the-box" music recording. Then they have the Model mixer series, which also allows you to record onboard as well as us it as an interface. They are less consumer friendly and take some knowledge of mixers to make them work, but are super powerful tools. I've had the Rodecaster and sold it. It was a little too much of a one trick pony for me. It does the trick very well, but I needed more than just a podcast/livestream front end. The Tascam doesn't give me that either. At the moment I'm using the Model 12 and it's an incredibly versatile tool for the hybrid broadcast, music production studio.

I found the Tascam retailing for $312 new and the RCP 2 is in the $500-600. Just based on price alone the Tascam seems the better choice while still giving the same Tascam quality we've come to expect over the yearrs. Even the Rode RCP Duo is wildly over priced for the limited features for smaller form and function. Great review BTW.

It's also kind of insane how much Zoom still wants for the P8. Lesser recording quality, less features overall, even though it's easier to use and has portability. Not worth $5-600 though. Tascam might be phasing out the Mixcast 4, but currently still has all the features most people need at $1-200 less than even the Rodecaster Duo.

For this reason I have to skip RCP and ZOOM. But Mixcast4 still has some flaws, it got hung up freezing one time(signals stopped, power button didn't work unless pull out the cord), after 1.20 update I've baked it 7 days and I think it get fixed. The thing i mis the most on the Rodecaster are a fixed audio output for line out. That way you can hook up some speakers and still send the audio to let's say Atem Mini. And a "basic setup" for people who don't know all the settings. So if anyone is messing up the audio settings , hit the "basic setup" and it will revert back to the settings you put in. Another thing i miss is a better line input. The TRRS is nice but a simple cinch of jack input makes it a lot more usable. A thing that annoys me is when you boot the Rodecaster up, the headphone make a loud *CLICK* noise, even with all the headphone volumes turned down. So even though the Rodecaster is a nice thing and was the first "kid on the block", technically i would go to the Tascam. No numbers next to the metersection was one thing Rode had too. That came with a softwareupdate. Tascam can do the same.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
This is all good feedback that I'd recommend sending directly to Rode to see if it might make it's way into future updates. For the "Basic Setup" idea, you can use the Rode app to save show settings, which will also save all your effects and stuff. It's not internal on the RCP itself, but it's definitely helpful.

I love all the inputs/outputs on the Tascam. That’s really something you don’t have the choice with the RCP. With the RCP you have to go XLR for the first four lines, and the Tascam looks to allow more routing possibilities. I still prefer the RCP tho

This is a great comparison! After a few days of going back and forth between the two units I have decided to go with the Rodecaster Pro!!! The main reason is...SOUND QUALITY!!! After watching a lot of reviews for the TM4 I feel that the audio coming out of the unit just sounds bass heavy. While at first the low end can be appealing, I now feel that the TM4 just does not have the richness and brightness of the RCP. For that reason alone I have to go with the RCP. I can work around everything else!

Hey Tom, I think you forgot to mention that ground loop issue at the Rodecaster, which is not preset to the Tascam. If I could reconsider the decision between Rodecaster and Tascam (even though I own the Rodecaster), I would probably buy Tascam over Rodecaster, only because of the ground loop issue with the monitor headphones.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any ground loop issues with mine in the 3 years I've had it, so I can't speak to that personally.
@thirstyexplorer2 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck, ah, I see. This issue only shows up when you connect another grid-powered audio device to the Rodecaster. For example, a PC instead of the smartphone into the TRRS jack, or a grid pored camera (powered with an adapter instead of the battery), to one of the headphone jacks... However, for me, this is the only issue with the Rodecaster so far. It is annoying, but only in the scenarios I mentioned. I found a workaround by using a ground loop isolator from Amazon, but then I lose a lot in the audio quality because that ground loop isolator is cheap stuff. But other than that, great video Tom! I appreciate your disclaimer at the beginning about your biased feelings in favor of the Rodecaster, and I feel overall you still gave a very fair review of the Mixcast 4. The only part that I thought was a bit of a reach in favor of the Rodecaster over the Mixcast 4 is in regards to the design and manufacturing country being the same, because, "...that helps to create really high-quality products." All of your Apple devices and your Sony cameras are designed in one country and manufactured in another and yet those are all high-quality products that you have recommended in other videos without any manufacturing disclaimer. If you connect your phone to the mixer, can you talk to someone on the phone via the mic connected to the mixer and hear them on th headphones? I ask because my Son talks to his friend over Facebook messenger and I'd like to record their conversation while he's recording his KZbin video. This way I can have both of their voices in the video and have full context of what's going on. I really appreciate your review!

Yes! You can do that on either device with Bluetooth or using a TRRS cable.

@@tombuck that's great! Also, can you apply a VST to your mic right on the mixer or is there some Tascan PC software that allows you to add granular eq to color my audio live so I don't have to to any post EQ work? 2:45 I sort of wish every mixer was build with inputs like those on radiomixers. On most of those faders can be XLR, jack or stero cinch (except for telco). Mic or line. Older models often mic/line/phono, but meh, phono preamps if you need to. At least on these digital mixers we can easily couple two channels to make a stereo one, but then you could have five stereo devices connected on this, not three. Then again, takes up space on the back. That's why those mixers are so high, but also more expensive.

My third video of yours this morning as I try to decide if I should buy Apollo twin x dau or get the rodecaster because I wouldn’t mind having more options for future use - any thoughts?

Both are excellent so you can’t go wrong! The Apollo is definitely a premium interface, and of course the RCP has the advantage of built in recording and more inputs. A lot just comes down to your specific workflow.

TASCAM is late to the game and they didn't offer anything that would make I think anyone sell their Rodecaster to change to TASCAM. Now like you I have two MAJOR complaints about the Rodecaster (Preamps headphones are worse than Mic, but Mic are not great there good). The lack of a balanced output. If I was buying new it would be a much tougher decision. But I think I would still buy the Rode. QUESTION! I've had the rodecaster for over a year now and have recorded close to 100 podcast episodes. I love seeing the market expand for these and I cant wait to see what new thing rode does down the line! So, here's my question. Right now I run 6 mics into the rodecaster. I use XLR splitters. Is there a "best" splitter to use or maybe a whole different setup altogether? I want the audio to sound the best but sometimes the splitters cause a ringing which is hard to hear for others but really distracting once you notice it. I'd love a video on good XLR splitters. I know you posted a video on how to connect multiple mics to the rodecaster a long time ago, but is there a best splitting method?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! I don't know a ton about splitters myself, so maybe it's a topic worth learning more about? Or maybe there's someone else here who can chime in with a bit more knowledge/experience.

You need a mixer to connect more than four mics to the Rodecaster. Eg DAP-Audio Compact 8.1. Or better, buy a Behringer X32 Producer.
@pompadourprince26062 жыл бұрын
@@johnlentokone7318 right now I have 6 mics hooked up but the Eg DAP-audio compact 8.1 looks great and is in my price range as a small podcaster. I would be able to connect that to the rodecaster simply? Is there a video or article you recommend I should look at? And if I were to browse different options, what others would you suggest or perhaps what brands? And thanks for the information!!
@johnlentokone73182 жыл бұрын
@@pompadourprince2606 I don't have used DAP-audio compact 8.1 or similar products. You can use Rodecaster's phone connection. As fas as I know that is TRRS connection which can be used as input and output. With a adapter which convers a male 3.5 mm TRRS to two female 3.5 mm TRS, you can have separate connections for input and output. Now you can use a RCA to 3.5 mm TRS cable to connect DAP-audio to the Rodecaster. If you use Rodecaster's mix minus feature for the phone connection, the output from DAP-audio won't be send to the 3.5 mm female TRS output.

The P8 and the Mixcast are both pretty even in terms of noise (they're both quite good). The Rodecaster Pro 2 and Rodecaster Duo each have better preamps though, which are quite a bit clearer, if they're within your budget.
