A good thing to point out is that the Caller calling-in will not hear their own voice coming back to them on their phone (Mix-Minus) but will hear everyone else talking to each other (plus the SFX... Music, etc.). Very nice design!

I literally used this feature for the first time last night with a friend of mine on the West Coast to check out the sound quality for a SciFi inspired podcast we are launching. I noticed a couple of things. One, the bluetooth connection doesn't sound as good as the trrs wired connection. And two, the remote call option is incredibly easy to use and probably the best feature of the Rodecaster Pro in regards to doing solo podcasts. You can easily bring in guests without any fuss. Which is amazing considering that we are living in the time of super cooties when meeting face to face is problematic.

It's wildly helpful! Scheduling podcasts guests is always tricky, but it's even tougher in times like this when travel isn't really practical, so this is a great option for so many of us.

This video was amazing! Thank you for getting so granular and detailed, and the Anchor tip is a great one! Question - does the Anchor interview/recording using the Rodecaster have just the caller’s audio, or is it one complete mix of everyone speaking? I would love to have only the audio of the caller for editing purposes... Appreciate all of your helpful videos Tom, and love the podcast. Thank you!
@tombuck

Hi Tom, very informative content as usual! I encountered a connection problem while I was trying to connect my iPhone to the Rodecaster Pro via the TRRS channel. Now after watching your video I figured it could because I used a TRRS-to-TRS for the 3.5mm to Lightning port instead of using the Rode TRRS cable that obviously is TRRS-to-TRRS. Will order one to test it out!
@tombuck

Hi Tom, love your videos and really helpful for me starting off on this setup for creating podcasts, my main question is if Im going to call someone via anchor to join the call what is the best connector for me to use from my iPhone ? eg the lighting connector to what connector on the procast ? an TRS connector would be best ? which connector are you using ? your advice is always welcome
@tombuck
@tombuck 3 жыл бұрын
You cna just use a TRRS cable, and then you'll need that little lighting to 3.5mm adapter for the iPhone.

@@tombuck I did the "wife test" too, but noticed the Anchor mobile wants the caller to register with Anchor to send the message after recording it. The sound quality was awesome, but not sure if listeners will want to go through the extra steps to send a voice message to the show. We couldn't get the phone call to work on her Android phone - something in settings was off with the microphone,

Interesting- I guess there are a few variables that can change it for people. 🤔

Hey Tom! Love your vids, You mention in the time line at ‘3:57 Call Screening (No Mix Minus)’... So couple of Q’s: Have you tried call screening where you place yourself (you must be on Mic 1) on mute (red button) AND listen (green button) contemporaneously, while doing the same for the caller (also on red and green buttons at bottom of their fader) - This should allow you to talk to them privately in a live podcast without it going to the recording/SD Card. It allows your other three guests (Mic 2, 3, 4) to keep talking to each other in the recording unaware of your call while you (as master panel operator on Mic 1) screen calls privately (although Mic 2, 3, 4 could pick you up if you aren’t in a seperate booth). This doesn’t work if you aren’t on Mic1 as Mic 1 is considered the Primary operator / “Producer” of the show, much like a talk show radio station. Give it a try and let me know. Also re “No MIx Minus” in Bluetooth... so does this mean the caller on the Bluetooth connection cant hear Rodecaster sound effects or gets major echo / conversation line noise etc, as this would be the effect of no mix minus, or am I wrong? Keep up the great vids, I watch with interest for my own podcast which has identical equipment to yours! Steve.

Thank you Stephen! I tried your suggestion and IT WORKS! By pressing the mute and solo buttons simultaneously, it creates a mix minus where those channels can talk to each other without affecting the recording. However, the "actual" recording then can't be heard through the headphones (even though it still shows on the audio meters). The same applies for the Bluetooth channel, which does allow people to hear everything without having an echo. Wow!

Bluetooth adds some latency - but, it's not really a show-stopper. As far as I know, this is the only mixer that does two-way bluetooth, and two way TRRS for phones (all the other mixers do sound FROM the phone but not TO it). You CAN do this with a phone and a regular mixer and a few audio adapters.

Hi there, great video, I'm learning so much from you. Just wondered - could I have two people on a call? I want to do a show that is discursive - if I used two phones, could I have one on bluetooth and the other wired up or is that a daft question?
@tombuck
@tombuck 3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely possible. Ultimately the Bluetooth and TRRS channels will just take whatever input you give them. So if you somehow set up a conference-type call on your phone, you'd be able to bring in more people that way (although you wouldn't have individual control over each caller).

TRRS is for Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve. With the RodeCaster Pro, the Tip is for Left Channel. The first Ring nearest the tip is the Right Channel. The second Ring is Ground and the Sleeve is for Microphone.

This video based on the older RCP. The new model does not have TRRS so live calls with no (Bluetooth) latency are a real problem that requires a new solution.

I will have to try out the Anchor to see, I have been using Facetime on my iPad Pro so we can actually see each mapping the iPad audio into the TSRR channel. I have also used Facebook Messenger as well and again the audio quality of both is above that of the over-compressed low quality cell service. I have a cheap VOIP system that doesn't work as good as all the other so I've never used it. Facetime is my favorite because it help to see the person it and Facetime use the best available data rate on both sites. I want to try it on fiber but on my cable, it sounds plenty good enough!

It really does help to see the person while talking. If your guest has a way of recording themselves, what I've done is used Zoom for the conversation, but had each of us record ourselves separately and then combine the files in editing. IT feels like we're just having a normal Zoom call, but we end up with high quality recordings of each person.
