This is a long term review of my experience with the Rodecaster Pro II since launch. Overall it’s been absolutely awesome, and even though there are some fantastic alternatives out there, I’ve found the RCP to be the most practical and user friendly option so I wanted to share my thoughts and explore areas for improvement

I’m a professional musician & love the RCP 2 for all my online shows (zoom, KZbin & another livestream channels). However I never record or mix my albums or singles with the RCP2. But 70% of my work is online live shows & music for worship & here this device is perfect: The routing & Bluetooth & output delay & onboard recording are so so useful despite the mediocre AD & DA converters & hint of latency. The headphones work fine & do not hinder me - however the monitor outputs lack clarity. In summary this device is bad for recording albums but excellent for live shows (Bluetooth integration here means synced audio to iPhone videos with no hassle). Thanks Tom for your helpful videos & generous presentation.

Hmm, how would you say it stacks up to a focusrite 2i2 4th gen? I was considering selling my focusrite as I have one of these coming tomorrow ...I sing occasionally.
@SimondeVoil
@SimondeVoil 2 ай бұрын
@@NadiaZC1 Hello Nadia, I used to own a Focusrite 2i2 2nd generation so unless the sound of the 4th generation is much better then I would say they sound very similar. I found the Focusrite to be very easy to use and it was 100% reliable (which is not always the case with the rode caster pro 2). The Rodecaster pro 2 does a lot more (e.g. it can compress your vocal and de-ess etc and has onboard recording which I use often & can delay the audio output so your zoom camera and audio can sync up) but due to this complexity it can go wrong sometimes and you need to reboot and start over. If you livestream complicated things then the Rodecaster pro 2 (or Duo) is better but for a simple set up and portability and space on your desk the 2i2 is better. But really both are fun to use and great products so you can't make a wrong choice. I hope this helps.

@@SimondeVoil thank you so much that's very helpful. I have a focusrite 2i2 which I use into DAW and that's how I get the audio for my music videos. I bought the rodecaster 2 for live streaming (singing) and to be able to use my sm7b. I am hoping I won't need the 2i2 anymore and will be able to sell it to recover some monies but it's a fair point you make the focusrite is simple, reliable and does a wonderful job on my sm7b. For daw I won't be using any of the processing as I've got plugins for reverb, compression etc. I will test both side by side in daw to see if I still need the focusrite anymore, thank you so much for your help. 😊

@@TalkinWithPowerthank you, I've got it now and have to say the preamps seem less noisy than my focusrite 2i2 4th gen, but the key word is "seem" I need to test them side by side. I bought it for live streaming and it's awesome. Does everything I want it to, would have liked more reverb effects but the hall and room is more than adequate.

Wonderful review! I was shocked to hear you hear a clicking noise every once in awhile! I thought I was the only one. I have tried to see if I could replicate it but it’s totally random. I had decided it was because I was using a basic xlr cable with no shielding but it looks like you have a much nicer xlr and still have the same problem. On another note I had read that rode was going to be releasing a wireless (recording in progress) light that you could hang outside your studio that would connect with the record button. I haven’t seen anything more on that. Maybe it was just someone wishing for it, but it sounded like a cool idea! Keep up the great work!

Tom, Your video are distinctively informative, educative and as transparent as possible.. I love to Rodecaster pro if all i need to do is talking but it doesn't shine much when it comes to music streaming or recording classes or courses. I teach guitar online and I had to return to my Yamaha AG 06 (will be nice if you make a video on that ) The latency is a real deal breaker for a music educator/content. ( never returned mine though) lol

Another great one Tom. I think Latency can be measured through the mixer, maybe an important metric in a mixer review. Not suggesting you go full Project Farm. I think the DLZ Creator has faster latency, we could be splitting tortussus or hairs here ;-) You've got one of the best A/V channels out there because you make it easy to believe in your impeccable ethics, a ray of light in an occasionally dark world, thanks!

Indeed. I too have really enjoyed learning to use mine since last October (2023). Re: those tiny, random clicks. I've noticed them too when recording and, to be on the safe side, run my exported audio through Auphonic (free) to remove any hint of noise before continuing a bit more processing, mixing, and mastering in Adobe Audition. That also helps remove any echo since I record in an untreated space.. Another step, sure, but it results in pretty good audio overall from a non-professional's p.o.v.

Appreciate you taking the time to chat about this product more! Also nice to see you have the competition around. 🤣 I have the first, and this second generation. The only thing I miss from the first generation is the 3.5mm input. Bluetooth is a dumpster fire. Bringing phone calls, or audio from my iPhone in is hit or miss with Bluetooth. For some reason my voice changer's no longer work... I haven't had time to look into it because I am busy with other things, and honestly it's not the end of the world. The power button sucks. It has nothing to do with double clicking to turn it off - I can barely get a single button click to turn it on or off. I actually think it's getting worse. The latency bothered me coming from the RCP1 to the RCP2. I got used to it after a while. I haven't heard any clicking in the headphones. If it's power delivery - are you on a UPS system aka uninterruptible power supply and battery backup? Maybe that would remedy this?

I'm glad you mentioned that this unit is not for musicians. I agree... I use the Rodecaster for my radio show recordings (vocals)... and it's amazing! BUT, for music, turntables, instruments, I use the SSL2 sound card. Thanks for the review. Last comment, I wish Rode had a preset for killing all effects, including effects on master outs etc. AND I wish Rode had a way to export custom Mic settings to transfer from one Rodecaster to another.

Hi Tom, great video as always! One question, are you able to have audio separated? I mean on a two pc setup, on pc #1: have one channel for Discord, one for desktop audio, one for mic and send these audios to pc #2? As well have the same separated on pc #2? Also have these audios tracks be sent to each either separated? Pc #1 sends just Discord audio track to pc #2, at same time send desktop and mic on their own audio tracks? Or would it be send in one audio track all mixed together? Hopefully I pictured it properly. Cheers

I love mine, except for a couple things: 1) The headphone volume #1 (which is the most commonly used) should be closest to the right edge of the device. The entire row should be in reverse order since your hand will rest to the side of the device otherwise you are crossing over the Main Output Volume knob. 2) The Duo needs a RodeCaster Cover. 3) The new Ducking feature needs enhancement. More reduction (beyond -12db) and a delay to control how quickly it recovers (accomodating pauses in speech patterns). 4) Prefer the power switch on the front leading edge...I constantly move this device to shut it off. 5) No power supply I have found works, even when outputting 9v at 3A, forcing me to buy a second power supply from Rode (one for the desk, one to travel). 6) With their beefy power supply, pass thru charging should be possible to retain a charge on the tablet that I connect via USB-C (electronic soundboard used). 7) RCP2 needs the TRRS headphone jack on the leading edge like the DUO. 8) A stereo 1/4" or 3.5mm output would be nice...but not necessary. 9) It doesn't stay connected to my network or any Bluetooth device, then when you disconnect you must re-enter the password...if that fails (usually does) I need to restart the unit. Other than these minor complaints, I love it! I hope a new unit doesn't come out soon...I know I'd be compelled to upgrade...lol.

After watching your earlier videos, I bought one for my home office. While its mostly used in Zoom and work meetings, one mic, I do use it for virtual meetups. The fact that I can have one nice mic for myself, I can mic up two people using The wireless MEs. (And can set up and configure mic profiles for each type of mic) So, ok, I'm not a sophisticated hard core user. But for me. The price of a mic amp to USB that had options for more than one mic... this unit gave me more bang for the buck. Now when I do meetings, my voice sounds great

I own the RCP 2 and I will echo (pun?) the complaints about the headphone latency. It’s so challenging to get over for me. I have to speak into it for at least 15-20 minutes before my brain can adjust to it, but even then I never stop noticing it. I just get used to it. On the note about build-quality, I had the micro SD card slot break within the first month but they were able repair it for free so that was nice. I secretly hoped they would also fix the headphone latency on my unit because I told them about that too, but it’s the same sadly.

One of the best piece of gear that I own. I don't use it everyday, but it's definitely changed my perspective on life and future. I took a chance and I see it paying off big. I have found that the fastest way to transfer large files on a Mac with USB is to use Rode Central, put in transfer mode, then ignore the app and open the volume that pops up on your finder. Then it is really fast to just open the volume and drag your file to the folder you want to put it in. It transfers a 1GB file in about 1 minute or less. Using the Rode Central transfer app can take half an hour or more.

A headphone amp in and of itself has zero latency. Latency creeps in if the amp is being fed a signal that has first been converted from analog to digital, then processed in the digital domain, and finally gone through a D-to-A converter instead of a live, analog signal. A/D, processing, and D/A takes time. That is what causes latency. Latency manifests itself as a delay in time from when you say something until you actually hear it.

It is a very great device. I am about to put it to its LIMITS! 36 hours of recording within 2 days… if it can keep up, I’ll be putting it through even more in the coming weeks haha. We’ll see how it goes! I might make a video about it 🤔 The clicking in my headphones is something I have been trying to figure out to! Have quite a few people mentioned that to you? Power supply being USB-C is definitely not great. I really wish it still had the OG rodecaster power supply.

That’s a ridiculous amount of recording! And yes- in the comments here multiple people have said they have the clicking too.

Awesome review! I was wondering if this is capable of changing volumes of multiple things separately like Spotify, game, discord, with the sliders? Similar to the GoXLR.

Currently there's not really a way to assign the physical faders to individual software apps. That definitely sounds like an area where the GoXLR wins.

I use a RCP2 for dual PC streaming, it's a little overkill but I like to have faders for everything and this allows for Music, OBS alerts, in game chat, discord, game and mic to all be on separate sliders. I would rather have a little too much than not quite enough.

Thanks Tom! That has been my experience with the Rodecaster Pro ii as well, with one exception that I didn't hear mentioned. This unit is NOT good at sending an analog line level signal to a camera or other piece of audio gear. The voltage from the monitor out jacks is somewhere strange between a mic level and line level, and really doesn't work well for either. For this reason, the unit can be quite difficult to gain stage if you are trying to use it as an analog/effects front end. It's made really to only be digitally connected to a computer. I have yet to try the Mackie boards, but allegedly (I think it was Curtis who mentioned this) the line level outs are a true line level on those units.

can confirm the clicking is from bigger electronics or appliances turning on and off. In my case it only happens when the AC compressor turns on. Hasn't been heard in any recordings or streams so far, after about a year.

The only thing the Mackie has is automix, which according to Curtis Judd is perfect in multi person recordings. Maybe Røde can put it in a future update, but it is also a main selling point for the Mackie. Since they are both owned by the same company some diversification is needed to sell both. But the original Rodecaster was and is revolutionary and the Pro II is the further developement of that. Nice review.

Zoom podtrak P4 is great as small, affordable recorder, we use it for simple podcast and live streams for over 6 mc and must say deliver all we need, much better choice than audio interface we used before in terms of usability.

The RCP2 is a great interface. Sad to say I was an early purchaser and I've had 2 replacements this far! Third time lucky. For me, I prefer the original Rodecaster Pro. For a simple podcast that allows remote connectivity with no complications it wins every time for me. But, aye, still love Rode products.

13:50 I’ve experienced transfer times that are so long it makes the transfer process completely unusable. I’ve made several attempts to transfer 1-2 hour podcast interviews and it simply doesn’t work. I even left it overnight and the progress bar was still in the same location when I checked it the following morning.

You mention a random clicking in headphones & monitors. I had the same thing and tracked it back to my smartphone. It would occur when my smartphone was on the desk a few feet from the RCP2. I think it is when the phone is transmitting but not actively in a call. As soon as I moved the phone across the room the click or crackle stopped.

25:00 ok. I get it. I’m an acoustic performer and I don’t use modeling. In the 80s, I used a chorus a lot, but I grew away from that quickly at the end is the decade. The only time I would use amp modeling would be even I use an electric, but I would use my Vox modeling amp and mix it. Of course, that has its own latency, but it’s a known variable

I just purchased my RCP Duo today at Best Buy.. and got a discount $479 + tax.. I thought it was a good deal.. Your video about the VESA arm as a mount got me intrigued🤔 So I modified an extra tablet arm I had to take a VESA mount.. Such a neat trick.. Could You do a video about the MIDI controls and how to program them?? Thanks for your informative content..

Woo hoo that’s an awesome deal! I have this old video that covers midi on the original RCP: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYSQanaXdpqXlc0si=vYsG9LnX_W1EifYx Truth is, it’s a bit beyond my knowledge and the setup feels so clunky I just don’t use it too often 😬 (But if you’re already familiar with midi then it might seem totally normal)

Thanks for yet another great video! You said the RCP2 isn’t good with music, so I have a question. I’m a hobby DJ and I stream live from time to time. I don’t play any instruments I only stream what I mix. I really like the Røde products, but would you recommend me to go for BOSS instead?
@barrioaudio

For what you need, the RCP2 should work just fine. The Boss GCS8 has great built-in plugins for guitars (amps and effects) and vocals (pitch correction, harmonies, effects). But you may not put them to use. The RCP2 is nice when paired with their wireless mic’s too, could be game changer for your livestreams.

I recommend that you use the wireless update feature by turning it off, if you accidentally turn off the device, its memory will burn. Please only update and use via wired connection.

About the latency: I don't hear the latency in normal circumstances, but after activating "special effects", e.g. voice pitcher, the latency appears. So, RC2 balances on the edge of performance, and I believe some people hear the latency also without "special effects". About the power button: I don't agree it's great "because it is hard to use". RC1 has perfect power button - easy to use, but you have to use it twice to power the device off. What was wrong with this old button? I don't get it. But after all: I agree - RC2 it's a great device :) And I love colors in your studio, Tom - where can I buy this nice color windshield for Podmic? I want it! :D

Been using my RCP2 for a little over year and have not been pleased with the sound quality. I don't get good clear sound from my Shure SM7B even at 72db. I'm ordering cloud lifter today and if that doesn't get me the gain I need then I'm going to go with another mixer. This was also my second unit because the first one had the problem with the sound board firing randomly, and the MOBO was apparently fried. This is not an anomaly. In the buried reviews you find online many people have had these same issues, but almost none of the video reviewers talk about it. I get the feeling Rode rushed this, got a ton of negative backlash, ignored/buried it, and wants to sweep it under the rug and move on to other product lines.

Dude, the latency issue is a real thing. That doesn't mean your unit is just like the others, and yes, you may have gotten a well working one just like a lot of people. But there are those people who simply weren't that lucky and they get to hear their voice in the headphones with an obvious unpleasant delay. And that'll never be OK. And the audio specs don't make it good for music production, you're right about that. It's just good enough for podcasting.

The Duo is excellent. It's basically exactly the same as the RCP2, just smaller. I think the build quality might be slightly better, but that could also just be because it's smaller and feels more "dense."
