the greatest about him is that he can show how an amateur is playing because when you get to that level is really hard to go step back and show how you can wrongly play. Kudos!

Excellent. When I stopped using my index finger as an anchor to the fingerboard, my speed improved drastically and my hand loosened up quite a bit as well.

I just found this video and will absolutely be subscribing and watching more of your lessons. I dislike it when some electric guitarists use the term "master class" when they really mean a lecture. This is a real master class. A public lesson with an expert, talking about pieces or questions prepared by the student.

I have to say Tom is bang on with his lessons. What else I like about Tom, is he's not showing off instead he's helping. To me this is rare on u tube. The Guitar is a versatile instrument and to actually fully master it all will be impossible to who ever learns it. Never ending fun in my opinion. Tom's lessons are very interesting to learn from legato techniques etc. It's about relaxing to learn and build perfection and speed will come 🙏🙏🙏👍👍

As primarily a legato player, I analyzed my playing after this video and realized I was doing this intuitively. Great stuff!

So grateful I found this. I was suspicious that you didn’t have to ‘pile’ your fingers on pull offs. So I checked a lot of videos to know and nobody mentioned it, so I started thinking that I was wrong. Thanks a lot for this video!!

Perfect! This is what I was trying to figure out for years. Before I watched this video, I'm not sure if I have to put all the fingers down or put one finger down at a time when I need it. I felt that one finger at a time is more natural but I'm not sure if I'm just being lazy. I was also struggling with clarity and speed on legato. The snap analogy was spot on. I'll try to improve my legato based on this lesson. Also, the riff in the lesson is perfect for me. I don't know if it's just a coincidence but it's the same riff from an anime song (Haruhi - God Knows). Since I've started playing the electric guitar, I was already playing that song and I'm still far from getting it perfect. That killer legato intro riff is too fast (I'm just using the speed to hide my mistakes) for me too play clearly. Anyway, thanks for the clear and spot-on lesson :)

I used to do the same while doing pull offs. Prepare all fingers first and then pull off until I found this video and corrected my mistake. Nobody tells you this but tom hess did. Also nobody tells you about hammer ons from nowhere especially with pinky finger.

Thanks hopefully this helps. Been wondering why my pull offs are so quiet and already figured preparing takes to long. Guess I need to get my fingers down quicker before releasing.

Have you figured out a way to measure downward pressure on the string at the moment you've fretted the note? Seems like if a guitar is setup properly this pressure could be a standard.

Great advice as always! Any tip for muting the adjacent string that is higher in pitch? Sometimes I inadvertently sound that open string as I pulling, grazing it with my finger.

+Thomas Schafer ...Use your ring finger on the picking hand to lightly rest on the higher in pitch string to keep it from vibrating.

Thanks for the reply! I had been trying to use my fretting hand index finger, but in some cases that isn't very convenient for fluid movement. I'll work on training myself to use free picking hand fingers now. Thanks again! You put out better stuff for free than most give during a private lesson that is paid!

IMO his biggest problem is synchronization. You can tell because each time he plays the arpeggio it sounds a little different.
