Dont feel scared to pick a OW the main thing is that they move faster and a bite is more painfull but there are exceptions like H. gigas. Less speed, less dangerous bite :). You ill love them after u feel more confident in handling their care. The main difference for me is their speed and some are just likely to defend themself by biting but it isnt something to be afraid for.

Hi, Tom! I’m your new subscriber! I’m from the Philippines and I’m glad that O. Philippinus is one of your all time favorites. Have you ever heard of the “Palawan Blue”? If I remembered correctly, it was discovered and described last 2016. Just to share, I just purchased this Palawan Blue and will receive her in the next few days. So excited. Also, there’s a tarantula that just got discovered this late 2019; and is still being researched by experts. For now, it was named “bloody red tarantula” and was found in the Northern parts of Luzon.

Hi Tom! First off, loooooove your channel its so great seeing how to have a busy home life whilst safely caring for tarantulas i have learned so much from your channel! I am new to tarantulas and currently have a very bolty Chaco sling and a juvie curly who is such a character! I ordered a jumping spider and was sent a free sling... one of these orange beauties Orphnaecus philippinus. It is fast fiesty and i must say i love its spirit. I have researched alot and of course watched your vids on the species and i know they are quite a T and after seeing the speed of this sling i get why beginners are advised to wait awhile and may shy away from them. I however want to do the very best by it. Its here and as quick and attitudy as it is im already quite attached to the little guy. It came on bone dry substrate so i added alot of moisture and it ran straight onto it and has now dug a burrow which i assume means its happier now? My main question in regards to this species is rehousing. Its in a small sling cup atm but how much of a bigger enclosure is it safe to rehouse to after it has moulted. With my small experience and its rapid fire speed i would prefer to limit the number of rehouses if possible to avoid stress for us both as i gain in experience. I too have a busy home with other pets and want to keep ecerybody safe. Would really appreciate any advice on rehousing this species. Many thanks for taking the time to read my long post and please keep making the videos they are really educational and interesting to watch :-) . Thank you!
@TomsBigSpiders5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Zoe! You should find that your O. philippinus will be quite shy overall. The only time the speed should come into play is during rehousings. If you give them room to dig, they would much rather bolt to their burrows and hide. Good call adding the moisture..this species needs it! About what size is it right now? What size is the cup? Let me know, and I'll tell you what I think.
@zoedavis31655 жыл бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders thank you for your reply. Its small atm about 3/4 of an inch diagonal leg span. It dose sometimes bolt in its little burrow but likes to spread out on the moist substrate and do the ocassional zooms around the container. Its in a 2inch x 2inch x 3inch tall tub id say max with a good 2 inches of substrate. Its not afraid to take down prey thats the same size as it (dropped in a small cricket and was about to take it out to prekill as i realised it was nearly same size as the sling but in the blink of an eye it was on it and had already bitten into it and wrestled it away! If it spooks into its burrow its not long before its back out seeing what im up to lol. Seems very inquisitive so far and is very entertaining. Just lightning fast! Thanks again.
@zoedavis31654 жыл бұрын
@ Tom Moran . Hi Tom just to let you know my sling moulted successfully last week and is now twice as fast and skitty lol! It dosnt seem to like bring lights and likes to hide away for the most part. So far everything is excellent and mine is growing extremely fast and looks great and healthy. My question to you is do you know if this species(Orph. In general) can climb smooth surfaces or not. I have not seen mine climb at all. We were wondering for escapees sakes
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, all tarantulas can climb glass and plastic, so these guys should be no different. That said, if they are like other Orphnaecus sp., they'll need deep moist substrate to burrow into. If they burrow or web up, that usually keeps them from trying to flee. Hope that helps!

Hey Tom! This question isn't related to this species but I wanted to comment on a video posted more recently. I have several species of Brachypelma or now Tiltocatl. I'm not concerned about any of them except my B. Albiceps. It's made a burrow kind of later on whereas my others got right to it from day 1-2. It was roughly 1in when I purchased it but lost a leg in transit. It went into a molt right away and did not regain the leg. It then ate a ton a quickly went into pre-molt. Then dug itself a very tiny burrow in the corner when it has ample room for burrowing. When it flipped to molt I was concerned with how little room but it managed just fine and regained the lost limb. It has since eaten a large cricket that I was able to get into the very narrow spot she opened up. My concern is her ability to get out of the small burrow. I know I'm probably being silly but the way it's burrowed in & the way dirt settled on top, it won't be a simple climb out. Do you suggest I clear away the substrate on top so it can come out to stretch or for a drink of water? I've been using a dropper to get some droplets down in there. What would you do? I know we should let the spiders, spider but sometimes they do need a hand.
@TomsBigSpiders4 жыл бұрын
Hello, Joelle! So sorry for the delay! Has it opened up the top of its burrow itself? Like, is there an opening? They usually open up their burrows when they are ready to eat, and they will come out to hunt at night. I have been keeping for years, and I've never had one become trapped in a burrow. They will dig themselves out if there is a cave in (which normally won't happen because they reinforce the inside walls with webbing). The only issue I've ever had with burrowing is if I give them too much substrate, they will burrow all the way down and don't re-emerge to hunt. If the burrow has an opening, I would just keep the bottom layers moist and leave her alone.
@joellemegan29344 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom! The opening isn't large enough for him to come out, he expects crickets to come down that hole. I keep using a dropper and putting 3mls of water down there since he seems to not be coming out to drink. He is eating now as well. He did burrow to very bottom and doesn't come out to hunt, I just put his food towards the 1/2in opening and it crawls down and gets eaten. Should I not do that?

Yes I am in the states. When you posted your video I watched of course then went to fear not and found them. I'm shocked the slings aren't more expensive. I'll pay about the same for them as I did for my pokies (subfusca h.l. and regalis) and others. It's a shame that some burrowing species are so beautiful and you can almost never see them.
