Tommy is such a great story. From 1st rounder, to cast away, to XFL Champion/MVP, back to the NFL as a backup, to record breaking starter, then with grace becoming a mentor to one of the greatest QB's in the 2000's, and finally ending with a Super Bowl Championship.

Very well said. He got a ton of undeserved grief during his time in Pittsburgh. I think fans are much more appreciative in hindsight, even though, that seems to always be the case.

You forget the part where he went into Cowher's office whining and crying that he was promised to be the starter after Ben came in for Tommy and lit it up and was named starter...and the rest is history. Yup....though in dudes defense he had struggled from team to team then selling insurance, to the XFL then picked up by the Steelers and he thought he had finally made it only to have the rug pulled out from under him because of the incredible talent of Big Ben.

With all the elite linebackers we've had over the years, I feel James Farrior has lowkey been overlooked. Guys like Ham and Lambert stole the show early, guys like Porter and Harrison were the half-time show, and now Bush and Watt are the closers. I guess it's easy to forget about Farrior beings we didn't draft him, but he was a very crucial piece to the center of that linebacking unit.

Maddox was a darn good starter but after the 2003 6-10 season we took advantage of the high draft pick and took Ben. The makeshift O line of 03 is why they struggled so mad due to injuries. Maddox was so good that Cowher didn't want a QB in 04 but an O Lineman but the Rooneys knew Maddox was probably a bit flukey or his days were numbered and insisted we take a franchise QB. After he got hurt and Ben took over in week 2 of 04 he was done. You can also see in his appearances in 05 how is arm had lost it's zip. Rooney's were vindicated

Hopefully Claypool and Smith-Schuster grow to allow Ben and especially his successor run an offense like this (a la Burress, Ward). Strong supporting receivers, big and athletic tight ends, and a RB committee though w a prevailing #1 back. Early '00s showed the template. Why can't we have a fast offense to go w our fast defense???? FB Watt can help make a difference as Kreider did with a speed offense. Rosie Nix just couldn't stay healthy, slowed and changed the dynamic of the O.

This was as good as the 2003 season got for the Steelers. The only other decent game they played was a week 16game against the Chargers were they put up 40 points. Bad O-line play and an inconsistent running game doomed the Steelers that year, but they got the 11th pick in the draft the following year and selected Big Ben...The rest is history after that.
@shaunbaker51583 жыл бұрын
Sure, the Maddox experiment was fun, but it wasn’t sustainable. We lost our identity, took a full year away from Jerome Bettis’s HOF career and we ended up 6-10. Tommy can be the QB, just don’t make us the run and shoot. Same team goes 15-1 the next year with ball control.
