I met George in a cocktail lounge in Tenafly, NJ. 1976. Wound up back at his music room. I asked him if he still had the Johnny Smith guitar that he recorded the Breezin’ album with. He went to a different room and came back with it. He handed it to me. I played a little of the melody at that point he took back his guitar and played most of the song. Just for me. One of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

Tomo, awesome story. I was studying Okinawan Shorin-ryu Karate and my sensei was also a jazz guitar player. He knew my guitar teacher, who did not study karate. Both of these guys were amazing people and huge influences on me and I miss them both. R.I.P. Gene Briscoe-sensei and Jimmy Kay. Gene played around in local clubs in Las Vegas, Jimmy taught classical guitar at UNLV and private lessons out of his home after he retired.

Great lesson, Master Tomo. I have always wanted to learn this song but was "afraid" because it seemed difficult. Your break down and explanation makes so much sense and now I have learned this wonderful song. Trivia bit - in an old interview, George Benson said he did not think the song would be a hit because the beginning line was do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do and who would want to hear that. Turned out to be a big hit and a great tune.

This was great lesson and analysis. I had to LOL a few times cause you are having so much fun and it comes across nicely. I was living on Maui island in 1979 and somehow got exposed to Breezin perhaps on the radio...not sure but that was such a fresh and cool sound at the time and so fitting to be on Maui. I worked very briefly in Lahaina in a restaurant on front street that is gone. it was called the Blue Max. And I was a dishwasher that didn’t go very well for me. The restaurant had an old airplane hanging from the ceiling and it was a bar and grill place up on the second floor. It was one of those airplanes like Snoopy vs the Red Baron. There was a small stage as soon as you walked up the stairs there was the stage. They had usual house band and that was really cool. One night after my dishwasher shift the manager said to me...”do you want a pau Hana drink?”. I didn’t know what that was because I was a Haole. But I figured it out and for those that don’t know that means....finish work drink. Well, lo and behold, who comes in somehow and gets on the stage but George Benson and Lonnie Liston Smith I believe....I have a great picture of Georg Benson but it’s on a slide that I haven’t transferred. he is just dripping sweat....I don’t remember what they were playing but that was a very cool night for me and totally unexpected. I guess GB had a house and recording studio on upcountry Maui. Ok for now, thanks for the lesson. Let me go try those chords and stuff. So fun!

Tomo, I love this and everything else you have gone out of your way to teach us! You continue to inspire me into growing my phrasing vocabulary and chord voicings. I've only been playing Guitar since Christmas, and as far as I’m concerned you are my Guitar Treacher!! Much love to you and your family and thank you for posting on KZbin and allowing the general public to have access to your amazing lessons! I can't tell you how many times I've watched your content on here over and over and even slowed down for practicing-it’s perfect!! Thanks Again!

Nice playing and cool lesson. George Benson is such a tasteful guitarist. I'm glad I came across your channel. I love this kind of playing and I had kind of left it behind. I think it's time to break out some of those old CTI albums!

Gonna be practicing this song for sure soon. And I'm mainly a rock and pop player. My second guitar teacher in the early '80s told me "forget the rock guys, go get George Benson's albums and study him," and I scoffed. Now, of course, I realize why he would have said that. For some reason, now I'm glad I bought a Fender Mustang amp years ago.

@@TomoFujitaMusic I meant to ask: do you use any reverb or FX on this tune? Or just totally clean with very lttle gain?
@TomoFujitaMusic3 жыл бұрын
A little reverb from the amp.

@@TomoFujitaMusic I see, will set it for that then. I'm hoping to learn some of this later tonight.

@@TomoFujitaMusic I sat here for an hour and played along to your video, also the standard Breezin' studio, I was at least geting most of it down. The rest I was just improvising. I have some blues skills, though I've never tried much jazz guitar. Using my Telecaster, which is new, my old Strat is in need of some work done.
