I had a similar experience. I felt she introduced ideas about characters that seemed like they were going to go somewhere and then it would fall flat. I discontinued reading on both sides section (which I thought that detail on naming the chapter sides side A and B was a little creative) because I didn’t appreciate graphic detail surrounding an intimate experience of one of the characters. it was probably very minor but for me it was unnecessary and not a book worth it enough for me to ignore and then potentially coming across something else like that. I didn’t go into that book for that kind of content. (I don’t mind implying or stating something is happening but when you start to get unnecessarily graphic, it a no for me) I don’t read that much contemporary stuff so I just wanted to give it a shot. I could be wrong but I felt she used the male characters to make them into what a female might want a male friend to be like or how she would want them to respond. (Like having this platonic relationship and Marx saying and doing all the right things) The talk around video games was my favorite part and the few times they spoke about world building in video games. That was exciting to me. I felt the most for Sam since he was the one going through the most and where I left off, not receiving a lot of understanding. I could relate a little to his experience. But again not worth it for me to continue. I’m glad I got what I was able to gather from it but I’m glad I didn’t continue giving it more time.

Thanks for the comment. It is always good to know we are not alone in the world when disliking such a popular book
