This is one of those songs they never performed live. I’ve always loved this track.

Benmont hitting it on the nose here. They were always a great band but that groove at that time was what launched them over the top.

What Benmont was trying to say here was: “How fucking great was Stan Lynch?”.

Edited excerpt from the TV series Classic Albums: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Damn The Torpedoes” that aired on MTV, VH1, PBS and other channels... The show is a song by song “deep dive” into the band’s recording of their seminal and iconic 3rd album that was produced by Jimmy Iovine and sound engineered by the great Shelly Yakus. Definitely a “must watch” for every Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fan...

This is a supreme example of what makes The Heartbreakers and how their music captivates us. Not a hit, but another piece of the pyramid of greatness they built over 40 years.

I love Benmont explaining how this beautiful song came together. He didn't show in the band limelight much so I like seeing & hearing speak.Tom said everyone would want Benmont playing the Hammond Organ & piano in their band. We're so lucky he was a Heartbreaker🎹💔💘

When I hear him talk about this song, it makes me realize I don't know anything about music. But I know talent and greatness when I hear it.

I once saw Benmont at mass in Beverly Hills. He was by himself and I don't think anyone but me noticed who he was. I wanted so much to say something to him at the end of the service but he stayed in the pew and knelt so it just wasn't appropriate.

Sounds like he was going through something. Edit, probably the death of one of his parents, if it was either 2002 or 2014.
