Hi Tom, I have been using a ECP 3420 for a few years now. I originally thought that I would be upgrading to a more expensive machine (even more expensive than the Gaggia) but have been so satisfied with the espresso from the Delonghi that I have yet to lay down the money required to upgrade. That humble machine punches way beyond it's price point when it comes down to actual results.

Outstanding review, Tom, as always. Excellently structured and full of exciting details. Thank a lot, I really did expected such conclusion in comaparision. Regardng external design of the mashine I have chosen delonghi stilosa ec230 for myself. It is absolutely the same inside as #ecp, but the surface is matt plastic which looks more attractive and practical, and also it has a metal steam wand with no useless panarello attached. Smaller shower screen was replaced the first day, a bigger one from ecp fits with no need to disassemble the maschine. And regardng the boiler, just fyi, I saw a number of technical reviews where guys measured its full volume pouring water into assebmled ones, and found out it to be 220 ml.

I bought the ECP3420 per your videos. I noticed mine looks a little different as it’s an American model. Other than the front knob that you mentioned, the rubber tip on my steam wand is a lot shorter than the tip on your model which is odd. That being said, I replaced the steam wand with the Rancilo Silva steam wand. The water hose tube attached to the wand on my model is a braided hose compared to the clear hose on yours. I had to purchase new clamps to replace the single use ear clamps that are now used. The replacement wand works great but isn’t as rigid compared to the stock wand. I also replaced the water screen and bought a non-pressurized portafilter basket. Truly advanced mode! All that said, it’s a great setup and doesn’t take up a lot of counter space. I appreciate your videos, Tom!
@Chris-derf511 ай бұрын
the rubber steam tip being shorter for the US model was something I noticed too. maybe there's a way to find the longer tip?
@13beyeker11 ай бұрын
I did the steam wand upgrade on my machine as well, however for me the original rubber tip was producing better mild than the metal wand. However, I got a Chinese copy of the Ranchillio wand and not the real deal so I wonder if that may in some way have contributed to the poor performance. I also have the braided hoses and was able to find replacement clamps at Harbor Freight in the automotive section, but it looks like I may need to return to the factory default at this rate.

Sounds like you got your machine pimped - nice! I have noticed that Delonghi seems to interchange with rubber nozzle lengths and braided vs silicon tubes. I am not sure why.
@jeffandersen62338 ай бұрын
Love the Wisconsin shirt! Outside shells of machines take second to what's inside such as plastic vs metal tubing and connections to me and why I owned a Rancillio for years I've had a Gaggia and found the steam wand articulations limited, not wanting an aluminum boiler and the space under the portafilter limiting. Those things made me want an upgrade though the machines do work fine. Interesting comparison I've not seen on any other channel.

But if you stick with one coffee beans or not sure that PID is needed for you - no sense to spend money on GCP. I made right decision for my requirements, for sure. I have both machines, starting with the Delonghi because of the low price to entry into the hobby. I’m happy with both machines, the Delonghi machine is great because of the smaller diameter portafilter is more forgiving to learn on than the 58mm on the Gaggia. More important than the espresso machine is a great grinder that is both consistent and has enough adjustment to fine tune the grind. I started with the baratza encore, upgraded the burr to the M2. It worked fine for a few months but I needed something with more micro adjustments, I settled on the baratza sette 270 and have been happy with it.

We had the predecessor to the Delonghi ECPs for 10 years without any issues until the heating element broke a week ago. It must have been 1-4 espressi per day over the whole time frame. Since our grinder dates also back that far and seems to let off more and more coarse grind particles we replaced both with a Sage Barista Impress. After some setup woes we really love the convience on that thing as its basically turn on, press grind button, press tamper button and brew the espresso and a lot less mess on the kitchen table due to OPV and the enclosed tamper system. But the thought still remains that if anything on the Sage fails out of warranty we will basically have to replace the whole machine. Now Im by no means a espresso expert but I wouldnt say its espresso tastes much better on the sage. Most important thing with espresso still seems to be a good roast, soft water and a quality grinder. Basically all of these machines can make very good espresso. Thanks for all the effort you put towards your videos, they surely helped us a lot.

I'll vote #ECP because I just picked up a used one and spent under it's normal cost to replace some parts. So far its a good starter machine.

Been making espresso 40 yrs. I cannot perceive any difference in the shots pulled. Reminds me of a similar home machine I use as a standby, Electrolux /AEG ea150, at least 15 years old and still works like new, also have non pres PF. Pulls favorable shots even when compared to a LS S1. The electrolux also has the advantage of being heavy so it does not dance when you move the pf.

Just want to say thanks for making this content. I’ve had an ECP3220 for about 9 years now that has been nothing but faithful. I was using the pressurized basket until recently, when I bought a bottomless portafilter and some other tools. After dialing in my shot process, it makes incredible espresso. I’m beating every cafe in my area, hands down. Disappointed with the 3220’s milk texturing abilities, I thought my machine had reached its limit until I found your video on the Silvia steam wand mod. So now I’m doing that mod, but taking it a bit further. I’m going to harvest the guts from two ECP3220 machines, and build a case from scratch to create a dual boiler. I’ll report back how it goes, and perhaps even create some content about it. My goal is a true dual boiler, highly capable machine, for

You should do a comparison video of each in its own class.. I’d say the best of the best in the less than 200, 500, 1000, 1500+. I’d like to see that.

I bought the ECP over the GCP as I wanted to avoid the aluminum boiler, then came the GCP Evo so I bought it because it had a coated boiler which would be superior according to several youtube influences, now of course the EVO boiler has started to flake like for so many other Evo owners . The biggest difference between ECP and GCP Evo is that the EVO heats up the Group head and portafilter much faster, I don't even get the same heat on the ECP as I do on the EVO, it doesn't really matter how long I let the ECP stand and heat up.

Do you pre-infuse the 3420 by turning the knob on and off for a few seconds?

That is a GOOD thought! I will have to give that a shot soon.

Awesome video Tom! Can't wait to get my ECP in the mail and pull some shots. I was just wondering if you've seen some of the new steel steam nozzles coming out for it online. I bought one by a brand called KUCHZUBE. The tip has 3 holes and it installs just like the original pannarello. Originally I was thinking of doing the Silvia steam wand mod but this nozzle might offer similar results without having to pry open the machine.

No, I haven't seen those yet. But good luck and have fun!

right off the bat the first thing that strikes me is the huge amount of space in the delonghi where i can fit taller cups rather than only tiny espresso shot glasses or small cups. i struggle with this on my gaggia classic and am always removing the water drain to make space for taller cups.

#ECP. Picked up an open box 3220 on Ebay which I believe is identical to the 3420 except for more exterior plastic. Wish it had a manometer though. One thing to be aware of is the silicon steaming tube on the ECP series can stink of sour milk unless thoroughly cleaned after each use. Silicon has a tendency to absorb smells. Easily replaced though.

Got pretty much same setup after your reviews. In Canada got the ECP3630, and the Mii Coffee sd40. Really happy. Installing a old Ranchilo Silva steam want and 9 bar opv. Will send what improvement it makes.

For what it’s worth (not knocking anyone for having either.) I recently had my delonghi (same as in this video) massively overheat and stop working. Delonghi did absolute fuck all to help me out and if anything was rude in not honouring the warranty. I just bought a Gaggia evo pro and couldn’t be happier. The thing is a beast, though definitely has a learning curve.

Well trying one more time. Last two direct comments have disappeared. In answer to question about tapping into boiler for PID. No need. Use a k type thermocouple that comes with a 6mm loop and mount on the stud that holds the two bimetal thermostats. Stability is good. Much better than the wide swings you see with these bimetal thermostats, also can modify the brew temp. Two notes...unlike gaggia where you typically mount the SSR on the metal back. Do NOT mount SSR on the plastic case - use some metal. Also, might suggest using one of the 12 or 24volt xmt7100 to prevent high voltage from exiting case. Edit: spelling…

I have Stilosa and I am plenty happy. The only comlaint is that with default pressurised portafilter there is way too much foam. As for taste - tastes the same as more expensive model made coffee.

I bought an GCP because I had an stilosa and I was very happy with it but the plastic piece to do the seal on the portafilter and the boiler gets broken so when I pull a shot the water scapes a little, and the GCP it's totally metal

Great minds think alike :) I wrote a comment about starting with the Stilosa 3 weeks ago. Had same problems you did, went with a GCP, mostly because I got a good deal on it and realized I can sell it, even after years of use, and recover all/part of my investment.
