I remember wanting to be a pro skateboarder as a kid, reading Thrasher magazine, cleaning debris out of empty swimming pools so we could skate in them in the off season months on the east coast. I had fun skateboarding and going to see the new decks at the skateboard and bicycle shops. I had an old school Powell Peralta Steve Caballero board with Independent trucks. Then a Planet Earth deck that was a cross between an 80's fish shape and modern nose shape. Then the 90's happened and they came and went so fast it's all just kind of blur now. Here it is almost 2020, my father's been passed away almost 2 years now. I'm now a father and I work for a living pay bills. Time sure does fly. Have fun while you're young, have fun while you're old.

The weird thing is, back in the day, we never had any internet, so I never got to see the actual style Hosoi had until the last 10 years or so. Only got to see pictures in Thrasher.

Now wait just one darn minute here... Hosoi KILLED it, and was 1st, that was the best I ever saw Lance Mountain skate, and he was 2nd. Tony Hawk BAILED, although an A for effort, and he's our hero and all, but come on now.... you can even see that Tony was PISSED and dis-satisfied with his run, and I think even he would agree he didn't deserve the win on this one. CLASSIC, but I can see why people were always pissed about the politics of judging back in the day. I think the judging is a lot more technical now, although of course, politics still rules (Money, label whores, etc.)

@TurtleDude054 жыл бұрын
But he lacked difficulty, conpaired to Tony in this run. Hawk did a good portion of his run switch had some of the same grabs but with additional rotation. And did a 720. I think they chose the right winner. But then again, it's all subjective.
@GoldenAgeSk8Video4 жыл бұрын
TurtleDude05...”lacked difficulty”?? Seriously?? A 10 ft high lean method air, rocket air, the CLEANEST MCTWIST ever? He had the smoothest, most powerful & stylish run of all the contestants..(Hawk wouldn’t even argue those points). Yea, Hawk tried wider variety of tricks, but NOT with as much power or STYLE which is pretty much king 👑 in skateboarding.. Why you think Cab won so many street contests? Not because he had the weirdest/most innovative tricks (like Gonz), but bcuz he had style & stayed on his board thru the whole run.
@TurtleDude054 жыл бұрын
@@GoldenAgeSk8Video I didn't say it wasn't difficult. Just that compared to the stuff Tony was throwing down it was a standard run, done really well. No switch or fakie tricks that I could see. Only 1 difficult spin. And while he had power, the last couple walls were pretty weak. And other skaters matched him in height. He did a good run really smooth. But all he had was some good grabs and one good spin, with plenty of style. Hawk was one of if not the only skater pulling a fakie 720. Not to mention that super high 360 where he brings himself to almost a full stop mid air. That kind of control is nuts and stylish as well. He was doing stuff nobody else was doing. If it was only about style, then Yes Hosoi wins that. But it wasn't. It's part of the reason current skate comps kinda suck. It's all about looking good, with little reward for creativity. Imo. I think Christian should have came in 2nd. But I don't think he should have won. But once again. All judging in sports is subjective. So to each their own opinion.

All these people saying Christian should’ve won. This run was literally THE SAME at every contest. He added a few new tricks like the Mc Twist and some lip slides after he realized he wasn’t going to win with just big air and style after ‘87-‘88. Not hating on him but Hawk was the reason so many of the vert tricks today even exist. If ANYBODY GOT ROBBED at a vert contest in the 80’s, it was Chris Miller or Jason Jesse.
