This must of been the best time in skateboarding listen to that crowd to have such a rivalry is awesome they don't have that anymore the internet pretty much stopped it back then everyone thought hawk and Christian hated each othe but they were bros they skated together all the time it was the crowd that made them a rivalry awesome times

I remember seeing this as a 13 year old. I never knew doing tricks was a thing on a skateboard. Prior to this I just used my board to travel. This stoked me so badly I grabbed my board and tried to mimic what they were doing in air on the streets. Skated til 93 when I quit. Last trick I learned was 360 flip. Til this day I still love skateboarding

I can't help but wonder what could have been if Hosoi didn't get locked-up and was pitted against Hawk in the X-games as originally planned. Likely the world would have instantly fallen in love with Hosoi's high flying confident agro Dogtown style over Hawk's technical mastery.

Nah, that shit was getting played out even back then. The whole attitude thing is what sucks in skateboarding.

The world only really started paying attention when Tony Hawk did the 900. But his video game would have made him a superstar, regardless. Hosoi might have been in the game, though; I think he totally could have been. Real skaters know why Hosoi is great, and that's what matters.

got to meet both of these legends during their xgames appearance in ventura last summer. was amazing to realize that Christian was really a humble and kind dude. I rode a hammerhead in the mid 80’s when he was doing things no one could and higher than anyone above the coping. Lucky to have been born when i was and love skateboarding from 77-now. Too bad we gotta run out of knee cartilage. Help us Kryptonics-you’re our only hope!
@jasonkanokaroke7 жыл бұрын
Hosoi's textbook McTwists seemed about equal to Tony's low 720's. Hosoi's huge blasting is probably what won over Tony's tech and bag of tricks. The crowd loves to see big airs. You can win a baseball game with well placed singles but everyone loves to see the home run.

Tony had left everyone else in the dust by 1988, including Christian. The last legitimate victory over Tony from an opponent of his (in the 80's) was Chris Miller, about a year and a half before this contest.

I was in the crowd. I was 12 years old. Tony mag was really on fire that night. Hawk did great as he always does. I still consider Hosoi the best of that era. Maybe he lacked in tricks compared to Hawk, but damn... his skating was just so fucking beautiful to look at. Two different schools I guess. I always preferred style rather than tech stuff. Hosoi had both.
@johnburwood66924 жыл бұрын
Always loved Hosoi's style. His speed and agression. He could of kept his style and added the 720 to his run he would have beat Hawk most times. Easier said than done though.
@crazyralph6386 Жыл бұрын
Don’t think anyone other than Hawk, could pull off a 720 at that point in skateboard vert history?
@augustvong7057 Жыл бұрын
@@crazyralph6386 Danny Way could do them in 89, but not as consistent as Hawk. Hawk added new difficult tricks every contest, like the caballerial rock'n'roll transfer here. In 89 he had Indy and Stalefish 540, new technical lip tricks and so on, and in 1990 the Ollie 540 ... Hosoi could perhaps do a single run on par with Hawk, but not in the long run. 90's Hawk would be a contender for top three even today.

Hi, yes you are correct, he was with Santa Cruz when he was skating here. The board he is on is a Raising Sun, 1986 Santa Cruz Vert deck. Dam rare to find in the colour he had, which was the orange colour one. I seen plenty of blue one's, and to my amazement one orange deck came up on Ebay the other week. Its hard to see the colour of his one on this clip as it covered in sticker's. On the top he has a big Jimmy Z's sticker covering the Santa Cruz logo.

@arranpattison58093 жыл бұрын
My two favourite vert ramp skaters... Hosoi had the power and style, Hawk had the technical and creative skill... The greatest rivalry in that era for sure. Poor Tony looked like he would snap in half if he slammed hard back then but in the 90's when he filled out more his style improved and adding to his technical skills made him untouchable!

Yeah the judges were dogshit. You watch Christian’s runs from ‘86 on were virtually the same every time until he added the 540 not long before this contest. This is why people like Neil Blender and Tom Groholski never finished great in contests despite having some of the best tricks in their runs.

Goofy? And never???!!! Tony became the greatest vert skater of all time without question especially when XGAMES came around. He pulled off tricks Christian could never do. I always loved Hosoi’s style in the 80’s, as a little kid he was really cool. Young Hawk was awkward in his physical development but it’s bs to hold that against him.
