As someone who currently programs for the GBA, these 3D polygonal characters and large detailed background images is all very impressive.

@@bug-kong N3ds is more portable imo. little bigger, still easily pocket-sized, but much better battery & backlight (extremely important for portable gaming, honestly), super easy to install cfw, capability of emulating Ps1+everything older, as well as having built-in VC emulation for nes, snes, gb, gbc, gba, etc. natively which usually surpasses third-party emulation in accuracy, ends up making it a much better device for portable gaming imo. nothing really beats a hacked vita, though

It's hard to overstate how remarkable the GBA version of THPS2 was at the time. There's three times in my life that I have been blown away by a game in the sense that playing it for the first time really felt like we had entered a brand new era in gaming from a technological standpoint. THPS2 for the GBA, THUG2 Remix for the PSP (it was basically a portable PS2 game and I was in awe of that fact), and GTA3.
@rhysm.59156 жыл бұрын
Played the holy hell out of 2 3 and 4 on the GBA. I really liked how the foreground would go slightly transparent when you were below the edge of bowls and quarter pipes, that was really helpful. Also the way you "snapped" to stuff when pressing the grind button helped out a lot with the isometric perspective wonkyness. Some of the points requirements in career were pretty damn unforgiving though.

This was a great video and I love to see these games get some attention. When I was growing up I played the crap out of THPS4 and THUG1 on my GBA. Later on I played them on PC and consoles, and they were good, but these versions never appealed to me as much as the isometric GBA games. I genuinely think THPS4 and especially THUG1 are among the best games on the GBA and the very best of the Tony Hawk games on any console. I've never felt a desire to revisit the 3D PC and console games, and yet I still go back and replay the GBA games sometimes, and it's always delightful for me. They have such a unique kind of charm that no other games I know of have replicated.

this might sound completely nuts but i've been consistently been playing thps2 since i got it. it's by far my favourite, not only because the environment appears to be constructed with polygons instead of the prerendered ugliness of the ones after, but the level design is way stronger for allowing more "realistic" lines that make sense to me as a real-life skateboarder. i've put hundreds of hours in free skate mode, it's the best way for me to destress, zone out, take a break, etc. ...
