How can ANYONE dislike this? Tony is the best pure drummer ever. Come on, people...use your ears.

Some of us aren't 10yrs old and get bored with just speed and chops. Tony Royster Jr has no musical structure to his playing, no phrasing, no composition. He's obviously studied none of that. He hasn't worked through any systems that I know of from any of the great teachers like Gary Chaffee or Alan Dawson. It's just shit frankly. Utter, mind-numbing, boring drivel by someone who is trying to figure it out on the spot as he's soloing and is obviously too lazy or too arrogant to investigate these things further. He's one of those guys that is physically a prodigy, but the music needs work. He's not superman and it's really about time someone gave him a kick up the backside if he wants to be remembered at all. This is like Branford Marsalis when he played for Sting for a while. Everyone in the pop world was telling him he was the greatest, and he felt like the greatest, but when he went back to the jazz world the elder statesmen of the jazz world told him, in 20 years your playing will probably be okay. Royster, musically, isn't even on the right path yet, so no amount of time will help him unless he gets his ass together.

He doesnt improvise his solos. Also worked with tony williams and dennis chambers and pretty much every notable drummer at some point. His technique and stick control is beyond impressive as well as his speed. I dont care for ALL his solos but definitely most. The first 90seconds are the best here. Not sure where that super long bash came from but the facts stated are inaccurate. Cant argue with ones opinion, but there is much to learn from this artist.

@@andrewp9253 lol there's nothing further to say. It's there in his playing, either you have the talent to hear it or you don't. More than any compliment from any drummer is a compliment from band leaders and musicians, which I've had plenty of (but it took a lot of hard work and humble pie before I got there).

Can't tell if that's a gate or just (ambient?) reverb - but the sound quality of this hurts. Saps the energy right out of an amazing performance. I still enjoyed watching. Thanks for posting it.

For me, if I hear TRJ, no one of all the world class drummers (even not someone like CC) has such a lot of unpredictable and dirty "out of time" hits.
