"Oh poor you!" "Nobody cares if I'm alive or dead" Man. The way the Sopranos keeps bringing back Livia is so impressive. It truly is the key defining feature of Tony Soprano and just like real life, it's not a season thing which blows over after a character arc. It sticks to you, it's all about how to manage with it, Tony never could.

@@roxannemua9350 she was absolutely suffering from borderline personality disorder and possibly other overlapping disorders. That isn't her fault. But it is her responsibility to get help and deal with her issues. Mental illness and personality disorders are NOT an excuse to be toxic and abusive to people. She was definitely both abusive and toxic. That's on her. Not that Tony wasn't, but that is a separate issue
@Dennis-ud2nh
@Dennis-ud2nh 4 жыл бұрын
I think there's an overarching theme of unsolved mental issues, denial, and how much parents can mess up kids for generations. AJ and Meadow have their issues but they are more self aware and might turn out OK if they were to distance themselves from their parents. On the other hand Janice tried that but still turned out like she did. Tony, Janice, Carmella and to some degree even Melfi in my opinion is in denial, and they're unable to understand themselves even though they all went to therapy.

It’s a testament to the Sopranos amazing writing that we see your comment presented in this scene. As Tony talks about the bottomless black hole, you get the feeling he’s just talking aloud to himself; not really to her, as she is a brick wall, like you said “in their own world.” He aptly ends it with the “you’re fucking crazy,” and you can honestly hear the fear in his voice when he’s faced with the realization that he’s dealing with a very broken, severely disturbed woman. Much like his mother.

The way she begged him to kill her... It's amazing to have a character be so hateful and pitiable at the same time. Mental Illness is truly hell, and Gloria is the best example of that fact that I've ever seen in media. Her entire life is a deep unending void of depression, hatred and self loathing. She can't help but ruin every relationship she has, and she knows it. All she can do is wallow in darkness and drag everyone down with her until she drives someone far enough to put her out of her misery. Even as someone who's struggled with depression for most of my life, I couldn't possibly imagine living a life like that. How can someone like that ever have hope? How could things ever change?

Gloria was a lot like Tony. No wonder they were immediately attracted towards each other. What's sad about Gloria though is that unlike Tony, she only can internalize her depression whereas Tony releases his anger through his mafia job. Gloria was independent, even being able to afford a trip to Egypt by herself. It was sad to see how she turned out to be just as depressed as Tony. Tony thinks that she is Livia, a black hole of depression, but fails to see how he too is also a black hole of depression. The one takeaway I got from the Gloria Trillo saga was to never date a person you met through therapy. Something is bound to go wrong.

I just heard on the Talking Sopranos episode with Annabella Sciorra that the spitting was improvised. She just did it instinctively when they were doing the scene and it shocked the shit out of everyone and she apologized to James after. Then she had to do it again so they could get a second angle. Lol. Gloria was a brilliant character. So sexy and seductive but absolutely fucking nuts as well! She also said that David Chase wanted to bring her on as a regular but she was away in Italy and by the time she got back and responded, he had decided to go in a different direction. It would have been interesting to see how things would have happened if she had remained on the show.

I've been in a relationship with a woman like this. There's no "right way" to deal with people like these. You can't resort to violence and you can't tricked into trying to solve the situation with words, because that's exactly what they want, to get some reaction out of you. The only thing you can do is take the blow and walk away. As long as you stay, they know you are under their control. Tony should've walked away after 2:00. People like this will happily eat up your entire life and future if you stay with them.

Gloria was deeply disturbed. She began to beg Tony to kill her at the end of that scene, like suicide by cop. This scene is so fantastic. Gloria showing her true self, saying the words just like Livia " poor you", "burn me at the stake", "I'll sit like a mute", and finally Tony sees it. He finally realizes he is drawn to women like this because of the mother he had. This entire relationship is fascinating to me. They are both mentally and emotionally disturbed people. The attraction for Tony is inevitable because of the mother he had. Gloria tried to kill herself before, at the end of a relationship. Annabella Sciorra has never looked better than she did when she was on this show. She looked fucking gorgeous.
