Marvel Studios has found its Doctor Doom-and it's Robert Downey Jr., who got a hero's death as Tony Stark in 2019's Endgame and will return to play the villain in the next two Avengers films. As in years past, the Marvel Studios panel was the event of San Diego Comic-Con 2024.

There were a couple of times he took it off, but generally it was ONLY when he was in his castle in Latveria. There was a FF issue where he had kidnapped or invited Sue Storm there, and he had his helmet and gauntlets off while playing the piano and was talking to her, though she couldn't see his face, just the back of his head.

I doubt anyone, fans or "modern audiences," would want to go see the film if they don't get an actual promise of something they genuinely want. RDJ has the star power to put butts in seats because he's earned the fans' respect and adoration, the very thing Disney has taken for granted and lost. Yes, revealing RDJ in the movie would have been a brilliant move, but people's enthusiasm for watching Disney films is so dead that next to no true fans would even be in theaters to witness that, much less tell anyone enthused enough to really care. This looks like a publicity stunt to hype fans up and try to make them give a damn, and its the only chance they'll get since Deadpool & Wolverine is the only Marvel movie anyone wants to watch.

That's exactly what I thought, I don't see RDJ as Doom. I mean, no offense to him, he's a great actor, but Doom is complex. He's deep, he's massively intelligent, and his backstory is NUTS. I just don't think or don't know if RDJ can pull that off. Furthermore, I myself just see him as Iron Man and I personally don't want to see Iron Man become Doom. I know that happened in the comics before, but do something different. They were originally created as two different people, so make them two different people in the MCU. I never get this complaint because of this simple question? Why would a variant abandon their own universe? So, a variant might come and help out in a movie every now and then, BUT they aren't sticking around. All you have to do is think it through. And variants aren't the same character anyway. I'm so tired of the same big named actors getting all these roles in all these movies. On top of that the writing, filming, editing, VFX have been creatively bankrupt in these movies. I miss the days we had tons of animation, with gritty & mature stories. I wish they would hire a bunch of random actors that FIT the role of the character!

I feel like the 90's & early 2000's did a pretty good job at this. Look at Matilda, The Addams family, Beetlejuice, The Neverending Story, the voice actors that had jobs & animators that had jobs. There's a million more examples. I just wish we could see Hollywood and Shows get back to that level of creative quality.

I know streaming services have changed the landscape BUT just because that's true for the majority of Hollywood doesn't mean that not a single part of Hollywood should keep some of these things alive. For example, it baffles me that Disney put in so much work & created from the ground up a talented quality animation studio, a voice acting studio, and all other things that went along with that and now Disney has basically gotten rid of all of that.. Regardless of how much effort and work went into that. There is many ways these things could have evolved and adapted to different times but yet most places just got rid of the entire thing? This might sound ignorant but.. When I was growing up in the 90's there was an Absurd abundance of animated TV shows, cartoons all over the place. To the point that it makes it look like current Hollywood is doing Jack sh*t compared to how much stuff was being pumped out back then.. So even tho I agree with you that we live in a different era and streaming on all these different platforms is absolutely ridiculous and there's no way it can be sustainable in the way it is BUT we shouldn't just accept losing some of the best aspects of media

When I saw RDJ was going to do Doom, I immediately said No. Nobody has done the Fantastic Four correctly yet. You literally can't have Doom without the FF. Straight out of the box they have screwed up the entire thing. I love RDJ and I don't think anyone else could have done Tony Stark as well, but Doom? Nah. They should have brought in someone fresh and new. Preferably with a natural German accent.

So from a comic standpoint and MCU dissector. Me and my friend talked about it and here’s the breakdown. Least likely:Tony Stark returns and DOOM is his new name, which is dumb. Probably: RDJ is DOOM/Victor von Doom, and no says anything about how he looks like Tony stark for some reason. Hopefully/More then likely: RDJ is playing one of the Variants of Doom, and people might not like it but Multiverse is a big part of Doom and Reeds rivalry, and RDJ’s Doom is one of the ones from the Parliament of Doom. We’ve already seen characters take over where other characters should’ve been(Carter as captain Britain and Rambo as Captain Marvel) and all the people that had on mask and hoods could either be Doom bots or hints to the Parliament of Doom.

That's a really complex and deep comic book lore to introduce a "new" character in the MCU that a vast majority of people (normies) barely know. My brother loves that he’s playing Doom (he’s kind of a Marvel Glazer), but I’m definitely looking at this from a business perspective. They’re pick RDJ because they know the fans like him, not because he fits the role. I just wish Marvel would go back to the days where they tried to experiment and do something different. I’m not saying Deadpool & Wolverine didn’t feel like a Marvel film, but one of the best aspects of the film was that it felt different from the other films we’ve been getting the past few years. Rewatching the original Iron Man (the best Marvel film, no question), there are so many things that differentiate that film to the later films in the MCU. Why can’t they go back to that era, where they try something different with each film. Instead they focus on expanded material, and how each future film is interconnected to this show, and this show, and this film, which requires watching this other show, and another film, but you should watch this film before that, etc. And they’re all gonna have the same overused sarcastic style of humour, and all the jokes aren’t gonna land because they’re so overdone and they don’t stop coming. And when it comes to the point where shits meant to get serious, they fail to treat it with the required gravitas. Instead they keep making jokes at the expense of the plot and the audience. I want less the Multiversal stakes and more personal stakes. You don’t need to KEEP raising things to ridiculous heights, especially if you can’t properly build up to it or treat it with the required gravitas. You can’t have a Multiversal threat and not show some serious consequences, but you can have a small scale story where things go right, and also hit just as hard. The audience can’t always perceive physical scale, but they can perceive emotional weight. So when the heroes loved ones are in serious danger, and there’s no guarantee of their victory, that’s when the audience starts screaming for them to win. Because there’s a chance they can fail, and we don’t want to see that. So if Marvels gonna make a film about small scale characters like Antman, Wasp, Moon-Knight, Hawkeye, etc, they should focus on these more hard hitting stories. If they’re doing a film about Doom, one difference I want is that they change the tone. Doom is not the goofy ass MCU villain type, he’s pure evil and should be portrayed as a goddamn fucking threat. The heroes will make jokes and he’ll kick their asses before they can finish, he’ll do horrendous things people never expect to see in these movies, and everyone around him should look afraid of him. Go back to the darker more mature tone of the first phase of MCU movies, and give us a film that actually feels like something important is going on. But that’s my idea for a Doom film, he’s probably just gonna be another “complex” villain who puts up with the Heroes bullshit and ultimately ends up flanderised. They did it with Thanos, so why wouldn’t they do it here? I often sit down and think about how I’d rewrite stories, and I’ve been doing that with DC, but I’m also considering working on my own Marvel rewrite (unofficial obviously, I’d never get hired by those people realistically). And I can definitely say this for certain, I would stray far from what the MCU is doing. I like the fairly lighthearted tone, but I also think some level of gravitas should be implemented into these stories, otherwise why should we care? If the characters aren’t concerned with the evil threat that’s gonna destroy everything, the audience sure as Hell shouldn’t be.

From "I Am Iron Man" to "I Am Doom" huh? Kinda boss, ngl. I mean I'm still pretty mixed too all things considered. Like growing up, RDJ as Tony Stark? My personal favorite hands down. Fell in love with him in his OG movie, and I realized in the first Avengers movie when he saved the city that he was my favorite Avenger. And too this day, even after his sacrifice against Thanos, he's still my favorite. And I don't see that changing. And now? It's just crazy to imagine the same guy might end up being my favorite villian in the future too It's actually kinda ironic since years ago, RDJ originally audition for Doom back in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie, which ofc he ultimately lost to McMahon. And who knows? If not for that loss, we may never have gotten him as Stark to begin with. But even since than, he's definitely grown as an actor, even wining an Oscar this past year. So I'm confident that Downey can pull it off. It's only a matter how they bring his Doom to life on screen. And since it's in the Russo's hands, I have faith that they'll do Doom justice. Also, to those who say that this is just a Tony Stark Variant who becomes Dr. Doom, no that's not the case. The Russo's confrimed that this is legit Victor Von Doom.

In my mind it's effectively going to turn out just like when Disney had Doctor Who bring back David Tennant. It's being done as just a "this person did really well in the past and was well loved in the franchise, let's bring them back to try and save the franchise." But I think in practice it's going to turn out the same way, in that everyone who has already checked out of the MCU is going to still be checked out and likely wouldn't even know that RDJ is Doom, because why bother giving any thought to what MCU is doing. Basically, when everyone's given up on the franchise due to the franchise not caring about consistency and bad writing, the only way you're going to get them back is to show that it's worth it to come back as they've learned their lesson and have a firm grasp of continuity and good writing, not just "Hey, remember this guy? We brought him back."

Honestly it seems and comes across as desperate and Disney going. "Hey you love this guy, PLEASE GIVE US MONEY!" Also Hollywood I know this may be shock but the time of actors being a major draw for films has LONG since pasted. Sure, a huge favourite might sway the odd few but for the majority of people I don't see any actor being enough of a draw, I think most people don't even know most of their favourite actors names anymore. I don't, unless I see them across many movies. Marvel has lost so much trust with audiences that they don't need one solid hit but several in a row and I just don't see that happening with what we've seen of the general writing quality of the MCU and Hollywood in general. A lot of the general audience just don't really care who is in a film but more so whether the story is solid. I don't see that changing anytime soon. No actor no matter how much loved he is, is going to make more people willing to hit up the Cinema as people have become way tighter on their purses. The Cinema isn't cheap anymore for most families. Last aspect is just the meta aspect of it, I now have to see the same actor who played Iron man as a totally different character and a villain at that. Would be like Ian Mckellen playing both Saruman and Gandalf. It would take you totally out of the film to a distracting degree. It's going to be so difficult to take away that part and most of all it's going to raise a lot of questions, I know the answer is multiverse and that the comics did it but I don't like it and honestly I hoped the multiverse aspect would just disappear.

I could be as strict as I like but this feels right... The MCU is still slowing down, even in the Deadpool movie we're seeing people trying to shut down these timelines in cinema and the stories. For as long as they refuse to reboot, Stark will be on everyone's minds. They've alreadydone their big full arc. They could either handle sidequests, or sit quiet for half a decade. They can't just restart so soon while everything is fresh in our minds. We need a great villain to make up for Thanos passing and it just feels quiet poetic and ironic in a sense that to keep the MCU alive they need to send one of its greatest heroes to attack it. They could bring in any actor in the world but no castings could ever have as much weight and no no villain could ever be as offensive to us as one that was as great an ally as RDJ, as a person and icon from this same world. The comics are all about this kind of stuff. The most famous and shocking ones do stuff like this. It's just that this... EVENT here, transcends the comics and movies. It's just what villains do. They love to pull the curtain back and show that they were plotting this whole time and were always amongst us... I don't just think it's cool, it's...... high art 😅 I mean it seriously. Just seeing RDJ stood there, not giving a Fudje, having one more run at amazing us after building such a massive legacy already and just basking in it all, knowing he's the shih..... I think he's playing a Tony varient that turns into Dr Doom (like in the comics) Honestly I can see a way this could work but theyre going to have good writers. I don't see a problem with using RDJ as a Tony varient because I'm still going to miss OG Tony, especially when the new Tony has a new personality, new goals & new backstory. I'm so excited about the potential of the multiverse but I'm so skeptic about the writing. Also I'm not really sure why no one talks about Pepper. Why didn't she get a grieving arc? They wanted a good female lead, so why didn't we get a movie where she's dealing with the loss of Tony, being a single mom, and the guilt and feelings of responsibility of trying to live up to her dead husbands legacy? A movie about Pepper conquering grief and becoming Rescue would've been great imo. Just imagine that setup for Pepper. She conquers geif, becomes Rescue, saves new York from some huge threat becomes an official Avenger.... then Doomsday happens. Doom launches an unexpected attack, hurting/killing people, the Avengers are fighting him, then suddenly he reveals his face. Pepper sees Tony and old wounds are reopened.

I remember seeing something, I don’t know if it was a show, movie or anime but as I recall, some villain who killed a hero was punished by being telepathically forced to become that same hero as a punishment/atonement. It would be interesting to see that happen to RDJ’s Dr. Doom. Where he is forced to become the hero Iron Man in order to eliminate the threat of Dr. Doom without killing him. To be fair, I have been half-expecting a big reveal that Tony had an uploaded backup of his consciousness that was discovered and kept secret by his daughter who agreed not to tell mommy but regularly warns him that she's gonna be _so mad_ when she finds out but is willing to let him lie in the bed he's made while enjoying what she can get from him (albeit hugs being a bit less since the closest he can pull is controlling an armor suit to hug her). If this really is an AU (or even a clone) villain and not just the same actor in a different role where at most someone might comment about a resemblance but definitely not the same guy whelp it's not Tony, at most it gives an extra motivation to take him down hard.

Just for clerance Chris Evans who we know him as Captain America also too played another Marvel character before as well being Johnny Storm aka the Human torch. And at the time now where Deadpool & Wolverine had came out he appear in that movie but as the Human torch. And I can assure you that most of the people in the audience were at least confuse or didnt know he also played another superhero in the past. When I first heard long ago when they cast who will played Captain America in his first MCU movie, I was much like you confuse as you as to Chris playing another Marvel character but it all work out in the end for how well ve perform that is seperate to the other character he use to played.

If anything, that would cause more of a reaction to the friend for getting it right. Have you never guessed something while being with friends and getting it right? Clearly not, because it always gets a fun reaction lol

The Multiverse is a fictional narrative device. It's purpose is to acknowledge and connect the multitude of different stories and continuities across a franchise. Over time characters and concepts may become outdated, fall out of favour or fail to take off. Audiences tastes change and new directions may need to be taken. The Multiverse allows this as a narrative device. All those continuities can feed into one continuity, keeping what works and leaving what doesn't. The stories told remain just as valid as they were. The history of those characters isn't erased, but acknowledged. This was demonstrated well with Spider-man No Way Home and with Deadpool and Wolverine. RDJ being cast as Doom to bring about the end of the Multiverse and kickstart a soft reboot into a new MCU actually seems fitting when his portrayal of Ironman is what started it. The MCU multiverse is just a meta for them getting all their properties back under one roof anyway. Now they do, they want to unify it all.

This might work, a predictor of this is how well the comic was received. From what I understand. this wasn't an idea that came entirely out from left field, I've read that there was a run where Doom in that particular universe was Tony Stark.
