I think a lot of this show reinforced the idea that old habits die hard. Tony raiding the fridge, Chris and his drug addiction, Feach Tony B and Phil returning to the life after 15+ years in prison, Carmela continuing to love Tony despite his continued infidelity. There are prob dozens of examples of It throughout the show. Time and circumstance may change, but ppl almost always act in ways and patterns that feel familiar to them, no matter how illogical or destructive these habits are from an objective perspective.

While some of its best work came in Seasons 5 & 6, I think this finale would have been a fine way to wrap Tony's development; leaving us with Tony never being legally punished for his many crimes, but being punished personally with the realization of his greatest fear (losing his family, "those ducks flying away").
