So important to eradicate the fear of birthing. I had a home birth with midwives, no drugs, no hospital. It was awesome! My entire family was over, my husband was feeding me toast and Gatorade to keep my energy up. My Mom was cooking in my kitchen, music was playing.

Also, there are hospitals that have natural birthing facilities on their premises to allow things like water birth and to have a midwife or doula deliver your child or advocate for you with medical staff on hand in case of an emergency or complications.

Im not big on sharing goals ,but as a 22 year old black male who is interested in the female/child connection and health I plan on becoming a certified midwife/obgyn. I love the idea of holistic medicine. The idea that I will be able to provide a safe space for all woman and children to come and allow me to experience the birthing process seems like a joy. One goal I have is to open a practice that will be split in a way. One side will provide the opportunity for woman to come and enjoy the space to allow their bodies to birth a child naturally, and the other side (ob) will be available to give them the option to lean towards more of a modernized birthing technique. I feel as if this will allow me to provide trust so that my patients will feel as comfortable as possible during such a fragile process. I still have a long way to go. A lot of research, question asking and observation will be needed to pull this plan off. But I believe I can really be apart of a solild and positive movement in the black community when it comes to providing a safe environment surrounded by trust and love for not only the birthing process ,but the respect for the field as well. One more goal I have in regards to this one is wanting to base my practice in a predominantly black community. There a plenty of places I havent been but Atlanta is definitely a top spot for me. Keep your eyes and ears open. Youve got one otw…👏🏾💯

I will be front and center to watch this documentary. I am blessed and fortunate to have had a stress free, complicated free vaginal birth. Though the staff was all white, they listened to my concerns and answered my questions without looking at me like I was crazy. I declined anything that I did not deem necessary. Prayers and blessings to that King and his baby. Thanks for sharing!

Right! Black women unfortunately have to be their own health advocate when they go to the doctor. I even had a White nurse tell me once how at risk Black women are & it’s not from underlying conditions. Black women are just treated differently. We NEED MORE BLACK DOCTORS!

@@bentheisraelite Unfortunately, finding a “solid black man” is not the solution. Under- representation in the medical system is the problem, especially when it comes to complications. Sometimes a midwife isn’t readily available where you live & complications can force you to have to go to the hospital even if you have a midwife or a “solid black man” & we’re underrepresented in the medical industry. As I said before we NEED more Black Doctors.

We need birthing centers that are specifically for the process of giving birth and prenatal care. Women shouldn't have to go to the hospital, which is for sick people, to give birth safely. Also, this pandemic has shown that birthing centers make more sense as we saw Covid patients intermingled with pregnant women who were forced to give birth alone because their birthing partner was not allowed to attend for fear of increasing chances of viral spread. Birthing centers would fix a lot of these issues!

My girl works in this field. There was a black woman who was experiencing pain and she kept trying to tell her OB. But the doctor wouldn’t listen to her. She kept calling and making appointments telling the doctor that something was wrong. And the doctor blew her off and refused to see her. So she went to my girl and she did an ultrasound. Turns out that the baby had been taking on water and its head was swelling like a balloon. She took the ultrasound back to the doctor and the doctor not only refused to see her, but when shown the ultrasound, she dismissed it and told her not to believe it. The woman went to the emergency in room. And the doctors in the ER saw it, too. They did emergency surgery and told her that if she would have waited for another week not only would have her baby exploded but that would have led to eternal bleeding and she would have died. Her OB sent her a letter saying that she no longer wanted her as a patient right after she had the emergency procedure.

This documentary was heartbreaking. I wasn't aware of the statistics until I saw an episode of the Resident where they did an episode that was similar to what happened to Kira Johnson. I agree with the gentlemen in the doc that both of their partners could have been saved but died due to severe neglect. Watching Felicia’s journey when she went to the doctor’s office versus the birthing center was mind-boggling. At the doctor’s office, she and her husband were always the first to speak, and the staff seemed like they did not want to be there. At the birthing center, the lady behind the desk greeted them with enthusiasm. The suites and services they offered were night and day. We need to keep the conversation.

As an African American mother who gave birth to 2 children, I was very conscientious about researching my OB/GYN, looking at doctor reviews, looking at hospital reviews and their C-section rates, asking every single question I had...and a lot of this behavior came about because of some of my experiences while pregnant along with everything I was reading about the black maternal health crisis in this country. African American women experience so many more issues on the path to motherhood than most including having more premature babies (my son was born over 2 months premature towards the beginning of the covid lockdowns) and having higher rates of preeclampsia, etc. It's frustrating but we have to take as much control as possible of our healthcare. It shouldn't be this way but we have to remain vigilant. If something doesn't sit right with you about your doctor, the nurses, the staff, ultrasound imaging centers, the hospital, the pediatrician, etc., trust your gut and find a better one immediately.

Can anyone shed some light on what is specifically causing the high rate of maternal mortality of Black women? The pro abortion people (such as Tanya Lewis Lee) always bring out this statistic as a reason why we should support abortion but they never mention what can be done to change the statistic. What can we do to address this and fight to improve it? They literally sat here for over a half an hour and didn’t address the root of the issue. It is important to address what can be done in the aftermath but what can we do to prevent it?
