So glad that new episodes are coming in September. I always enjoy your content, and am thrilled that you've found a way to keep this series going in these difficult times. Goodness knows, preparing new content of any kind must be a strange new level of challenging, while America continues to be pretty damn plagued compared to even its Northern neighbour, where I reside. Not to mention, if any wholly new content were coming from you while there's still a global pandemic, this is about as best as we could reasonably expect, I'm sure. I'm so glad you've found a way to keep active in this fashion, while we all try to get through this, let alone in California. Here's hoping that making more of these will help you mentally, as well as the rest of us who watch and listen to you and your friends' chatter, as we will hopefully see better days come sooner than later. Goodness knows, I miss travelling already, for instance. Warm regards Tony! I hope that you're as well as you can be, all things considered, and I'm excited to come across more new content from you. You're one of my faves. ;)

To repeat something i found interesting that I said about this on Twitter when the episode was first released; the sister who didn’t stick with acting, Kay, went from one type of cast member on the Disney payroll, to another. She works (or at least worked, I don’t know if she’s still there) as a zookeeper at Animal Kingdom.

Okay, as someone who saw this movie when it came out, and someone who read the book after that out of pure curiosity, let me tell you that the movie is VASTLY different from its source material. The book is a cute little YA novel about a girl who's trying to live up to the superhero she's created (and that superhero ends up being more of a manifestation of her insecurities as opposed to some cartoonish villain she ACTUALLY talks to that makes her look insane??). There are a few mature themes for kids in there, though, like how to deal with fat shaming from a family member, how to deal with a best friend getting a new friend outside your circle, how a hate comment from a celebrity can really screw with your self-esteem--hell, there's even a subplot about internet grooming with one of the popular girls which serves as the climax to the novel as opposed to the required school dance that's in EVERY DCOM. I'm disappointed that her hacker sister is switched out for a musical brother, but... it's a high school centric DCOM, what are you gonna do. Everyone is basically a stereotypical, cartoon caricature of their book counterparts. The popular kids aren't evil, Jamie's parents aren't complete morons, IS isn't Jamie's imaginary friend, and weirdly her environmentalist friend is whitewashed for the movie. But what I really can't wrap my brain around is the fact that in the book IS's superpower is The Flick, which makes more sense when, you know... you flick your hands, which is what they do in the movie. I never understood the fact that they changed it to "Zap," and even weirder, I don't know why THIS is the detail that's bothering me the most. As always, completely entertaining podcast, Tony, and sorry for the essay comment. I miss you all!

... I gotta have you on the podcast more often, in case we get more DCOMs.

Tony Goldmark You know I’m so down! I was kind of the right age for the late 90s, early/mid 2000s so I’ve seen quite a few of them (and even into the 2010s-don’t get me started on my shameless love for Descendants and Lemonade Mouth). But as far as the ones based on books go, I’ve only read this, Geek Charming, and Freaky Friday. I definitely don’t mind being the late millennial/early zoomer voice if that’s what you need!

While I definitely agree that this movie is very flawed, I remember there was one thing about it that I really liked. This might have been one of the first movies I remember where I interpreted different kinds of antagonists. Like during the moment when Jamie was discussing how Is was taking over and she drew that cartoon in the margins showing Is holding her with puppet strings controlling her with Jamie saying "Help me!", it was then when it clicked in my head. "Oh, Is is the real antagonist of this film, not Sawyer."

Oh god this movie has an ESSAY CONTEST!!!!??? Getting "I Accuse My Parents" vibes here!!!!!!!
@iangraham99884 жыл бұрын
A. Shouldn’t the friend noticed that the so called “essay” was 100+ pages long and tried to clarify it with the main character B. Most essay contests when I was in school (about 4 years earlier then film) usually had a 5k word limit. So I could see the judges disqualifying the main character’s “essay” without reading it because it would be obviously over the word limit.
@sydneyagnew87484 жыл бұрын
It's really not explained in the movie, but in the book, what she ends up sending her friend is pretty much just a short vent journal entry that she has to write into a complete novel once an agent and editor pick it up for publishing.

I recognize every character arms in the picture (Yoda, Mickey Mouse, Bart Simpson, Buzz Lightyear, Scrooge McDuck, Groot, R2D2, Iron Man, Air Bud, Kermit, Woody) except for the two red hands with blue sleeves in the lower righthand corner. Who is that? Also, why is Tony swinging a showerhead as a weapon?
@TonyGoldmark4 жыл бұрын
That's the vault handle. I'm not swinging it as a weapon, I'm trying to escape from vault disney. And those red hands belong to Pepe the King Prawn, from The Muppets.

I didn't see the movie, but Harriet the Spy and the follow-up, The Long Secret, were my favourite books as a child. As one person mentioned, much more nuanced than the usual YA. I'd recommend them to kids today, especially in the light of possible online spying.

Anyone notice how there’s too much hissing every time Morgan and Haley talk? Why does that happen?
@TonyGoldmark4 жыл бұрын
It's because they spoke a lot softer than me and Charlie did, so I had to raise their audio louder to bring them to the same level, and this was before I figured out how to make my audio software's noise reduction tools remove that hiss.
