Yo Tony, I swear man, I look at every possible videos I even subscribe to Macpro videos but no tutorial have come close to what I've learned from your 4-5mins videos. You make everything so simple, you explain well and you also show where to find the tool and most importantly, you use all stock plugins. For new beginner like myself you don't want to go invest on things you don't need and don't even know how to use. Thank you so much.

What separates this from every other eq tutorial I’ve watched is when you mentioned using it to make all the instruments fit together. I don’t know why but somehow that piece of information made me understand everything more clearly

Ironically, I tried to EQ, compress, and de-ess as much as possible but this is the best result I could get for this video. For that, I apologize! Just know that I am working on a system to make my audio better for future videos and tutorials. All in all, I’m not super proud of this video quality but there is still some gems in the content. Hey Tony - this is a great tutorial on EQ! Can you do a Part 2 though, this time with vocals and acoustic instruments? By "acoustic" it could be as simple as EZ Drummer, a DI guitar track, an externally mic'd acoustic guitar and a DI bass. Something like that would help those of us who need help dialing those things in and helping to find where they "sit" in the mix. Thank you!

Tony Holiday Well I’m at beginner level and I’ve had no previous experience with music production or even music theory so even learning the basics has been a struggle. But it’s mostly understanding what there is available, how everything works and what is essential for beat making. I’ve been working with your chords, melodies and drums videos lately and moved onto the compression and EQ videos. They helped massively but I’m not too sure where to go next...

That’s great man! Totally normal to feel that way. Music is hard and it’s a lot to take in right away because you don’t get a satisfactory result right off the bat. My videos are meant for people to start with as beginners so that’s great that you’re slowly goring through and learning what production is all about. My advice, stick with it. When you get frustrated or overwhelmed, take a break and come back to it later. This stuff takes time.

At 6:45 how did you know you had to cut out low and high frequencies? That’s my issue, I don’t know how to tell what frequencies I need to cut low or take up. And do you eq every track always, like is it necessary? Great video btw. Very useful 🔥
@itstonyholiday
@itstonyholiday 3 жыл бұрын
Just before that you see when I played the track it had frequency information in both the low and high of that spectrum. If you take out those two areas subtly the bulk of the sound is still there and that’s made space for other components of a song that you know go there. I.e. you can’t have a hi hat be a low frequency and you can’t have a kick just be high frequency.
@andreph1719
@andreph1719 3 жыл бұрын
@@itstonyholiday Got it🙏🏽🙏🏽 that being said , with the high hat and kick scenarios, how do I eq that if say, I have the drum track playing as a sampled loop(one track) as opposed to individual layouts/tracks of the drum(I.e. kick, snare, hi-hat etc)? Like since it’s all in one do I cut out much of the lows and focus more on mids with a tad bit of highs?

Hey man quick question , does this eq have linear phase features like fab filter eq? Wondering if I should buy fab filter eq aswell, I see those options can make a big difference and I’d like to have that option too Since it’s Black Friday week I’m hoping you can let me know soon! Thanks for any feedback

Hello! The one I used in this video does not have Linear Phase, however Logic has a built in stock Linear Phase EQ as a separate plugin. Fab Filters nice, but too expensive imo if you're buying it solely for that feature. Hope that helps👍

@@itstonyholiday I've been driving the motorcycle around Ireland trying to visit the 32 counties with a sampler and some synths trying to write the sound track to all the things I've been seeing while I'm on location. It's a bit of a mission and I hadn't ever shot/ edited a video before February so it's been a massive undertaking. I'm self aware enough to know I'm getting better but definitely not tight enough to put something out public yet. Have footage for 5 out of the 32 so far and I've 3 videos made. Gonna get the first 5 done then go back and re-edit them all with the techniques/presence/vision I've been incrementally improving upon. Advice like this video is pure gold for the production side though. Thanks again for the video keep it up!

This is an explanation of how the EQ interface works but not an explanation in how to EQ properly. You are just preparing for equalization/mixing, which is often done by the assistant of the engineer before a mastering session for example. There is much more to it, like finding the resonant point of a sound, accentuating, positioning a sound up or down on a 3d mix. Also I disagree about keeping the low end of a kick for the specific reason of hearing it on a small speaker, simply because small membrane can not just vibrate like a big one and this will result in saturation. Anyway great video I suggest you do a part two!
@itstonyholiday

Yea not a bad shout, you could quite literally go on about mixing and equalization for hours hence why it takes years to get good at it. This is a basic video mean't to explain the bare bones and get you started. A part 2 is necessary for sure 👍 Thanks for watching
