I think the counter point to Colin’s thoughts about the length of FFXVII, is simply that most people aren’t going to play the game like him. Most people are going to play the main story, hit up a side quest or two, dabble in the minigames, and then move on. So for them, this game is densely packed and always had something up to offer when they were looking for a divergence from the main story. But if you’re one of the few people that tries to complete everything the game has to offer, sure it’s going to feel like too much at that point.

I wholeheartedly disagree with Colin on his Rebirth is too long and dense take. While I agree that there are quite a bit of AAA games that are too long and have no business being as long as they are Rebirth is not 1 of them. Honestly it's one of the few AAA titles that deserve to have the game be as long as it is. It has almost 30 years of history behind it, with many supplemental media pieces that have added to lore of the world and characters that the devs want to include in this Remake series. It's the most popular entry in the Final Fantasy series. And to go and compare a RPGs game length to that of BioShock and to say that the game could/should be closer to that in length is kind of insane to me.

Suuuch a bad take on Rebirth's length. This is an RPG, a monumental one that is the second of three parts of one of the most beloved games of all time. It's a celebration, enjoy it. If you don't like it or some of the content, don't engage. I'm with you Colin when it comes to game length overall, like for adventure games or shooters. More lengths like Uncharted 2 or Resistance please. But RPGs are and have always been long. Yes Rebirth is double the length of og FFVII, but not all RPGs or JRPGs in particular even come close to Rebirth's length... it's an outlier and, again, something to be savoured. I have a full time job and it took me about 7 weeks to play. 115h, and I adored every moment.

@@XxZannexX Interesting, I just find the mechanics way better than Fallout 3, such as crafting, ammo, shooting down sights, the skills (big guns and guns being one skill for example) and the story is better imo. A lot of the mechanical deficiencies in FO3 can be fixed with mods to make it more like FNV. Both are great, but for me FNV edges it.

Shift Up made Nikke, if you've seen those character designs you'd know the costume changes in Stellar Blade aren't a creative decision. Yeah, the changes are minor and don't matter that much, but that logic goes both ways, why did they censor them in the first place? Especially when Sony's western made products have way more obscene and questionable material, see Abbey getting railed scene from TLOU2. Why are Eastern studios the only ones who have to tone down their games? The whole situation wreaks of California-based Sony hypocrisy. Also, Sony is a corporation, made up of thousands of people and different departments, just because they greenlit publishing a game doesn't mean some other department responsible for "making sure the product is acceptable for a global audience" or other such nonsense exists. They've done this shit before with Eastern games like DMC5 and even with that small horror game "Martha is Dead" they censored an entire gameplay sequence. There's a reason all the niche ecchi games are now going to Switch and PC first (this use to be a genre and audience Sony had on lockdown with the Vita).

You're right on this, I'm wrong. I went back and rewatched it, I thought he had said something more definitive than just acknowledgement of the issue. Still, if they are aware of the backlash and this is simply a creative decision as you said then they could easily just patch in the original costumes as alts (lots of games do this). I mean, I just don't see the patching of cleavage from the 1.0 as a creative decision, especially the bunny costume change itself just looks like a rush job, the added cloth isn't even a matching shade. In this case though it just felt a bit odd, I appreciate you're point about huge corporations having many departments that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. It's just in this case it didn't seem like a publisher led compromise. If anything they were leaning into it right up till launch. The character skin edit wouldn't change the age certification so there are no practical benefits to asking the devs to change it. I would believe Sony would definitely request changes if there was financial benefits or it would be the difference in age rating but that just doesn't seem to be the case here. It's not nudity so the changes are very arbitrary.

I refuse to play anything MediaMolecule puts out ever again. This is the developer that forced everyone who wanted to 100% the trophy list for LBP2 to purchase expensive peripherals they may otherwise have had no interest in (PSVita, PS Move controllers). This is the developer that did not bother to fix server issues for their games, instead opting to shut them down completely and thereby totally screw trophy hunters out of any ability to finish the online only trophies. I *barely* escaped with my 100% intact, but several ppl on my friends list, trophy completionists, were completely screwed. This speaks to a much wider problem regarding developers and how they go about selecting and enforcing trophy requirements. It should be MANDATORY that any online-related trophy have an alternative method of unlocking, if nothing else than for this specific scenario.

Demanding the AAA gaming space shorten game lengths is not only hilariously arrogant but incredibly self centred. As for Stellar Blade, Sony and Shift Up promised an uncensored game. While fixing the "Hard R", they snuck in a patch that censored costumes. They lied. Whether you think it's important is not the issue. The issue is that people bought a game based on what Sony said and Sony lied. That's grounds for fraud. To say it's no big deal is incredibly disingenuous but dishonest.I guess I should be surprised that you guys are both.

Americans call it a "British" accent, while Europeans call it an "English" accent. People in Europe distinguish accents by the country, not some overall region. Britain is a region of multiple countries. It'd be like saying a Canadian has a "North American" accent. Nobody does that, but for some reason, probably just through TV and stuff, Americans think "British" means a Hugh Grant-esque posh English accent. When really it's just an English accent, and of course that can be broken down by region further (Liverpool is way different than London) if you wanted to get granular but nobody would expect that level really. Just like Europeans can tell the difference between New York or LA, but the LA accent is so dominant in TV/Film that most people call that an "American" accent by default. So it's probably just American media that has led to the common phrase "British" being misused, (This is why *as a joke* American's are perceived as stupid, because they get things wrong that others consider basic, almost always when it has to do with other countries. Then they often dismiss it as weird or dumb, but their own country has the exact same nuances, again like LA to New York)

Speaking as a Brit though, technically they're not wrong. English accents fallen under the umbrella term of British. The same way that a Scouse Accent and a London accent both fall under English (don't tell the Scouse that). I think the issue really steams from foreigners, and Americans in particular, having this very narrow view, of Posh English accents being THE one and only British, and culturally one and the same with the term.

Three things. Thing 1. We don't mind and I wouldn't say generalized logic is a misused.A generic British accent to me is Queen's English. What you failing to consider is Americans know the LA accent as the default American accent because our media while huge worldwide is even bigger here. This is why the "Southern" regional accent is becoming more flat over time. We are not going to be offended by it being called American because it's used in every state. Many people across the US use that accent as an alternative. Savannah southern belles know how to do Valley Girl. Southerners muffle their accent in public all the time. Unless they go full Valley Girl or Cajun on you, we don't really colloquially distinguish it with a name because most everyone can turn that SoCal accent on from watching TV/Movies. Midwest and Southern are pointed out more because they aren't where the major media companies are. Most can use a generalized accent in addition to their relaxed local accent. You normalize you accent by your region by most are taught English pronunciation by a universal American standard and most can do the media friendly CA standard or go with Texas as a middle ground from thicker southern. Thing 2. It's obvious why Britain is associated with England in America. What is the common language called? English. What's the largest nation in Britain? England. What accent on BBC is the most common? English, specifically Queen's English. Who has the separatist movement? Not England. They are currently the most in support of the Union. In the Union Jack flag whose cross is the foreground? St. George, English. Wales or England have accents pretty much always called British because most Americans couldn't tell you anything about Wales because it was part of England before our colonial history lessons got to England. Our historical map says thats Kingdom of England. 1492, we're on Columbus and all the explorers. Jamestown(1607) is where England enters the story so sorry but this is just the truth of our system. Then everything taught is about England or France. We do colonization stuff, England stuff, and handwave to 1740s for the lead up to the French and Indian War. I know Union of the Crowns was under a Scot and about Acts of Union 1707 and 1800 but honestly that is not taught in America. You have to want to learn European history yourself because ours is all propaganda and unfortunately its also taught as boringly as possible. We go Magna Carta, English common law, English Bill of Rights, then go handwave right into Britain like they are England. Everything we are sold on Britain is English accomplishments. Scotland isn't mentioned. Ireland is no longer mentioned because that's not the propaganda being sold. You can't have people look over any contracts and suddenly peonage isn't slavery either. Thing 3. Welsh accents are thrown in with English and often mixed together all the time. Welsh accents in English language products are becoming fairly prominent. Scottish is made to stick out and isn't common. Scottish gets an exemption from being labeled British generically because we're thinking thicker more distinct Scottish accent, redheads, haggis, bagpipes, and kilts. Look at Brave, 2012 Disney. You can easily just say British to cover both English and Welsh if its not Scottish or Irish.

Grumz is a developer though. The boycott is against any and all games Sweet Baby consulted on. You might reach out to him and have him on to explain it you. One of the major complaints is that western studios are not scrutinized as heavily as eastern studios ex. Abbey getting railed on screen, but Stellar Blade has journos crying that the games depiction of Eve will literally get women ☠️'d. In response to the journo tears and reeees it seems Sony Ca made Shift Up do some cover up.

Honestly, that's fair criticism of the New Vegas map. It doesn't really open up until you've made it through the southern half, which can easily take 30+ hours. Still my favorite Fallout game. Fallout 3's map is also barren, except for the city which is a pain to navigate using the tunnels. Fallout 4's map is my least favorite due to the levelling system and respawning enemies.

I think Colin your in the minority with respect to FF7 rebirth. Most normies aren't 100%ers. They will do the Golden path or skip half the side quest, not care about clearing all the points of interests. And they are fully satisfied. Isn't that what matters. They paid for the game and feel satisfied with the purchase. And I get how doing the Golden path, etc may seem like a disservice to the creators and that may be true. But at the end of the day I think the creators would put a higher value on knowing someone enjoyed their game, felt they got the value out of their purchase regardless of how they played. Sure they may be disappointed they didn't get the full experience they were trying to convey, but as a creator don't you just want people to enjoy and value your creation like isn't that highest value above all else. Like sure you may think, well you didn't really get the full experience I was trying to give you, but above that isn't it just enough they enjoyed it and satisfied by their chosen experience

On the "feeling rushed to get through a game" convo, I've felt this way for a while. It's not necessarily the modern onslaught of media that makes me feel overwhelmed, as much as it is my very limited free time as a working adult, homeowner, husband and father. Gaming has honestly just fallen by the wayside. I'm wanting to spend my limited free time on various different hobbies instead of just gaming, and the bloated lengths of games nowadays makes me feel like signing up for a longer game, is going to eat my free time for weeks, if not months. I'm at the point now where I'm planning on just holding off on a lot of games until my kid is older and playing them with him

I guess its the old saying, "XYZ can be too much of a good thing" Let's say you have your favourite game. Now imagine playing only that forever. Imagine you had to play it every day, forever. Is it too much then? Obviously that's the extreme end, but where you draw your line in the sand, be it 10hrs, 50, 100, 1000, everyone has a line where whatever the game is, it crosses the point of being "too much" and for these guys, who play every day and make a living talking about the latest stuff, they also feel an extra pressure to move on. But they also complain a lot about everything. They complained constantly covering the activision deal, they complain when there's no news, they complain other people complain there's no games. I love em, I truly do, but sometimes their complaints are just talking points for the podcast rather than something that really affects them seriously.

a clarification to the localization bit here, there because the video Colin mentioned sounds like a disingenuous response to people asking for literal translations. when they ask for literal translation, they are asking for a translator over a localizer. the difference being, a translator translates something to be understood in their language, a localizer is meant to change references, topics, and characters to appeal to their targeted audience or change jokes and sayings to an equivalent in the translated language. a perfect example of this is a situation where a tongue twister was localized. 「斜め七十七度の並びで泣く泣く嘶くナナハン七台難なく並べて長眺め」 a translator would translate it to something like: I have been watching these seven 750cc motorcycles (nanahan) which are noisy like horses, and are placed beautifully at an angle of 77° what the localizer did was change this into: Can you imagine an imaginary menagerie manager imagining managing an imaginary menagerie? The whole "literal translations make no sense because of how Japanese works" is a disingenuous counter argument, because nobody asking for literal translation is asking them to translate each word as its positioned in the sentence, keep plurals vague because Japanese doesn't have plurals, or replace most uses of ok with yes. they're asking them to not drastically change dialogue, omit cultural references, or attempt to punch up dialogue and jokes because the localizer thought it was boring or offensive and just keep it as the line was originally delivered, but comprehensible to the audience.

I am from the US and thought Hard-R was a movie with lots of sex and violence. I’m older than most of the audience, I guess. So when they started mentioning racism, I thought for a while and came up with, “does a famous comedian have a bit about racism with a ‘hard r?’” And then I realized what it referred to, which is-I have to be careful-referring to the pronunciation of the last syllable of a two-syllable ethnic slur. If the r is non-rhotic, and used by certain people in certain situations, it can be considered acceptable. When a hard or rhotic r is used, it is not.

Watch Dogs 1 was excellent, it was a great hard-boiled tale of revenge. Watch Dogs 2 was awful and completely cringe, except for improved parkour mechanics. Then Watch Dogs Legion was okay, but it lost the vision of the original two games.

I went to law school after getting an undergrad and graduate degree in computer science. My goal was to advance my career in cybersecurity, a burgeoning and lucrative field, and never intend to practice law a day of my life. I graduated back in 2015 and absolutely hated the experience. My professors couldn't understand the obvious connection between law and cyber (privacy law, duh), and the students fresh put of their undergrad were some of the most obnoxious and self-serving people I've had to endure. Ultimately, yes, they found out that a JD, without a plan, is an expensive bragging right. Thank God I went into it with experience, a career, and STEM degrees to back it up. Moral of the story? Go to medical school, kids. My kids get to be any kind of doctor they want to be, but they're going to medical school, if I'm paying.

There's no British accent, but there are British accents. Technically saying someone has "a British Accent" is accurate as long as they are speaking in any of those accents. That said, yes, there is definitely a perception abroad that there is only a singular posh British accent. And maybe Cockney as well if they're being generous. But I'm pretty sure these guys know better than that, but linguistically saying British is fine in a general "anything from this island" sense.

@@highvoltage7797 Honestly it depends which American you ask. Many won't care at all. Others might. There's generally a higher level of identification with "American" in America, even in the states that are fiercely proud of their state culture, like say Texas. They're not likely going to get annoyed if you call them or their accent American, but they actually might if you call them a Yankee as that comes with specific North/South civil war history. Here in Britain we tend to use it as a catch all term for Americans, while there it specifically referred to Union troops, and so calling Southern Americans a Yankee can illicit a pretty bad reaction. A little bit like calling the wrong Irishman a Black and Tan, though obviously less fresh in historical history than that.
