When we grew up in Guernsey there was no need for traffic lights and filters - so few cars. That was in the 30s - 60s mind you - so different to today. Very familiar with the Rohais - every Saturday night dancing in the St John's Hall. At the traffic lights half way down was my husband's uncle's bakery - Sarchets. Nice that you were going so slow and even stopping - so much to see. Thank you Ross.

Yes, too many cars. Bus network is good, it would be a good idea if more people used it. But more buses would be appreciated. Each time I come to Guernesey, I’m pedestrian and I’m in self catering apartments of Grande Lodge Hotel. Very good place , 5-10 min to go to town center, 15 min from ferry terminal, lots of buses within a walk.

Even with a huge increase in traffic from when I lived in Gsy over 50 years ago, I was pleasantly surprised, when I visited recently in my campervan, that local drivers are very considerate and most understand how giving way can keep traffic moving. For example, on one busy evening rush hour I thought I'd struggle to get out of the Rohais chippy car park. But no, even though the heavy traffic was only crawling, I was able to be on my way almost immediately.

I didn't think that was too bad for a small island, but I am used to central London and the M25

*Well, the maximum speed limit of 35 mph is almost ludicrous.*

St Peter Port can be a bit of a nightmare, the rest of the island always feels quiet

I remember coming back from Guernsey in 2002 and driving in Brittany's capital Rennes ... What a mess it was.. And today, 20 years later, even in mid afternoon,...loads of cars and jams everywhere ! Last summer with my son , we wanted to visit the different car dealers and at the end of the afternoon we had only seen 2 dealers.! Compared with medium to large sized cities, Guernsey is still a paradise ! And what's more in Guernsey, the houses and the green spaces are so charming that even in a traffic jam it is still very pleasant !

I've read many in the channel islands buy mini's more than anything else.

I think people ask about cars in Guernsey because the smaller island of Sark does not have any and gets featured sometimes.

Lots of cars but no trains , Buses are good but people need to get about and i am told you see number plates up to 90,000 odd but not all of them are still on the road, i Still think Guernsey is good as far as transport goes and appart from peak times never seems over run by cars.

*_It appears to be far worse than the Isle of Wight - that now seems more congested than ever. The hotels and roads are busy, even in September, when parents and their little darlings (children) should have gone home to England. The demographic (shall we say) is altering also - not as good as in the "good, old days"._*

Don’t know how any tourist can afford to hire a car over there nowadays. It is quite ridiculous and I don’t really understand why the prices are so extortionate!

There’s too many cars. It’s not a very green island that allows more vehicles than population. No road tax or mot’s encourage people to have more than 1 car.

Unfortunately most small cars in Guernsey are driven by old bed wetters who should not have a licence, no man should ever be seen in a new mini or a fiat 500, and don't even get me started on electric cars, oh and if you drive into a parking spot or your driveway and then have to blindly back out into traffic put your license into a blender...
