She was in Beijing film academy as well. I think the Yang Mi case now is a result of the overall glorified mediocrity. She has been very lucky very early in her career and has been able to have access to the type of ressources and connections much better actors and actresses will probably never have in their lifetimes. Which led to a YangMi that has never been hungry as an actress. Plus she is a hardworking but successful businesswoman with insane connections in the industry. Knowing that her ego has never stopped growing. Her acting has suffered the consequences. The reign of quantity. Dilreba is unfortunately following in her footsteps.

Only thing I'll say in Dilraba's defense is she seems to be trying to transform earlier than Yang Mi to avoid falling into the same trap. She's taking on more and more serious dramas and selecting her partners a lot more carefully. So she's still maintaining her idol drama queen status but pushing herself in other areas. She's only 31 going on 32 so she still has time but not a lot. It's going to be a tough road to travel.

thank you for mentioning about the muscles. have seen many roles that usually need a ton of muscles to do their daily jobs : police, athletes, martial artists be so skinny it's unconvincing. i remembered there was a drama where there was a female bodyguard protecting a weak and spoiled rich guy and the guy literally looked more muscle-y than the bodyguard. 🤣

Talking about one actress AvenueX actually implies that so many potentially good Chinese performers are wasting their time and talent working in silly and cliched projects. The problem is that the majority of what is filmed nowadays is trite, repetetive and silly. Well-written scripts are few and far between, so what an actor is supposed to do? They just get what they're offered.

One thing you mentioned is absolutely right: Yang Mi worked too hard. She did 50 titles (films and dramas) during the first 10 years of her career. Xu Kai was hard working, completing 20 films and dramas in 6 years but he’s nowhere near the amount of work Yang Mi did. I am not sure if that was because of her production company pushing her or it’s her desire to get so many projects. Quantity does not translate into quality but maybe that’s not how the studio chefs look at it.

In my heart, Yang Mi's only drama is Ten Miles of Pech Blossom. She never filmed anything else xD I hated her acting in every other drama, actually her acting TMOPB is not superb either but I like that drama with a burning passion so I will only acknowledge that one. Is sad because she's very beautiful. Same thing with Yang Yang tho, the prettier they are, the worse their acting skills. They only rely on their looks and hope for the best, so sad. This is why I was so mad with the LYN thing. He might not be conventionally pretty but at least he tries hard to get better and it shows, he cares for his roles and the projects he's in. I had high hopes for this drama since I really like Qin Hao but after this review I think I'll pass. Thanks for your hard work Avenue! Love your outfit as usual 💚

I agree with you that only drama Yang Mi is decent for is TMOPB. Even in that drama, if she is a replaced by another decent actress, I think it would still be great. I don’t see her as beautiful. She sometimes have a rough mean look. I watched 2 drama of her after TMOPB, it was not good. I didn’t even give this drama a chance

I love Yang Yang's Face, but his acting annoyed me. He has never been changed even once in the way he talks or delivers his lines. The Way he Talk is similar from his rookies until his latest drama. i just hope PD YY can "trained" him even just a bit.

TMOPB is one of my favourite Chinese dramas of all time but I agree with you. Even her acting in that drama was decent, like it wasn't spectacular. I think Yang Mi really lucked out in that drama because Mark Chao's acting skills was so amazing and he completely carried that drama.

I have just finished this TV Series “In the Name of Brother”. I have enjoyed it immensely. I love her acting here. It gives me an insight as to the period depicted in this drama. The character she played became like that due to the circumstances of war and the character’s past experiences. During that era, women may not be given equal opportunity and her character proved herself by being commanding and ruthless to get to that high position. If her character does not do so, she would have been killed, framed or abused. At least this drama gives an insight that women can still hold a high position to maintain control of her subordinates compared to many other cultures and ethnicity during that era. I love her brilliant acting in this drama. The way she acted ruthless, stern, and also depicting her womanly feelings of loneliness and craving for love and affection from a man she loves whom she knows is on the opposite side/enemy of war/conflict, helpless feeling of discovering her brother whom she protected all her life has committed suicide. Her acting at the final episode when she realised that her counter-action of ordering the killing of the twin brother (he attempted to kill her first) of the character she loves is brilliant acting. In this final episode, her character tried to put on a brave front when she was given decent food and when she was alone, she immediately gobbled the food given to her to the point of choking and she cried helplessly after that. This brilliant act alone shows that she regretted her wrong decision not to be on the side of the resistance fighters when she was offered to join by the person she loves and this decision has caused her her own freedom as she was sentenced to life imprisonment as a prisoner of war when she decides to maintain her position. During her final imprisonment, she will never experience the new world, freedom and know how beautiful her country will be without the domination of another power during that era. I totally love her brilliant act. I love this lovely drama 💘💘💘 10/10 brilliant acting by Yang Mi😀💘

I normally stay away from Yang Mi's drama so didn't bother to check this drama out. By listening to AvenueX, the story itself is very interesting. I guess that the whole production, the director, screen writing, actors/actresses, and etc. fail to deliver. It's really too bad to waste a good story.

Yan Mi looks so lost, she is not longer sure which path to take for her career. Certainly she want us to take her more seriously as a reputable great actress and she is not. As you said, she is too late for the changes and to think she is considered a veteran actress.

I watched the first episode and found some things were ridiculous. I couldn’t take Yang Mi’s character seriously. She made some dumb decisions for someone in charge of an agency. War of Faith ruined these types of dramas for me. I was never a fan of that type of drama too until War of Faith. I thought I’d give this one a shot but I guess I’ll go back to not liking this genre and hold War of Faith in class of its own.

You mentioned that video content makers often talks about Yang Mi's face, how it's looking old and there are obvious platic surgery residual effects, while I agree it's not acting-related, I would say she deserves it. Since there isn't anything to chew on her acting, what's really left there? Yeah, appearance. And over the years, she has been overly using her appearance-face, styling, and outfits-as a major part of he marketing scheme, so that the focuses on her look now just come back like a boomerang. I also has this perception on actors that if they continuously put out bad acting, their looks become less and less appealing, and gradually even more and more ugly.

Not a fan of most Ming Guo espionage dramas so have not intention of watching this. Nevertheless, I always appreciate your reviews. As for Yang Mi, the few dramas of her that I have watched have all been a disappointment because her acting just does not draw me into the character she is portraying, Your expansive analysis of her career explains why this is the case.

I have not seen a lot of Yang Mi's work. She feels more like a business person than an actress. If I was Yang Mi, I would just retire and enjoy all the money I have made . Out of principle, I dont think time is up for Yang Mi. However, I dont think she'd be willing to do the work that it would take to get better. I think the word to describe Yang-mi is jaded ! To be consistently churning out one drama after another, one cannot expect much from her. She's a mannequin for sure which is why she is cast for so many roles, I guess. We could only wish for better versatility but that would simply be wishful thinking 😉😊🙃

I have a lot of complicated emotions for this drama. Watching it every day and eagerly waiting for the next episode to air, but if you ask what happened in 4-5 episodes back I don't clearly remember. I like how the story is shown, not very linear yet not too much jumping back and forth. There's always something happening in the back than what's usually planned and how it changes the situation. I like this kind of screenplay. Most of the characters doesn't have a back story for why there are like that. Guan xue - YM is still in My & my husband drama world or that drama was set in 1944. GX is said to be a complicated person but her complexities are never shown. We know her back story but how does it reflect on her current life? Its doesn't match. Song brothers - One is straight communist like any other dramas set in 1930-40s (secret communist agent within the enemy) and other just follows his brother's instruction. Like what happened when they were separated? How did they choose different paths and suddenly they meet and now both are at par in communicating with each other.... How?? I haven't watched any Qin Hao dramas other than one Lost tomb drama. I like his acting here. If according to AveX he's acting bad here, then I must check out his better acted dramas. Any recommendations, please comment. HuBin & Pan Yue - I like the actors in other dramas and here too monotonous to some extent. Both are hyper active without any reason. Sometimes its necessary but not always. One always has angry expression stuck to his face and the other is paranoid most of the time. Xie Yue - What is exactly her role in the story. Just because she is suspected to kill a Japanese, GX blackmails her to follow SZWen and she does... How does GX knows that she will be able to do a secret agent job without any prior training!! But among this actress's other dramas that I watched, this definitely her best one. Story - If I analyse it scene by scene, I would have found a lot inconsistency so I decided not to do that. Currently enjoying the drama. Only a few episodes left. I would like to keep it that way and not over analyse it.

My favorite Chinese actress Zhao Yu Tong😊. She is so refreshing. The chemistry between Zhou Yutong and Li Xian 💥Such a unique topic.. Death, dismemberment Wow! and yet handled so beautifully. Being 76 I usually avoid the topic of death Lol. But I gained some perspective. For me it was a beautiful drama with a great cast: the young actors who played FL siblings❤❤, the grandma❤. Why are traffic stars so busy. I need more Zhao Yu Tong and Li Xian.

Yang Mi is not like actress Linda Hamilton totally buffing up for her role in Terminator, or Demi Moore in GI Jane buffing up and shaving her head. I guess you are saying Ms. Yang is no Meryl Streep. totally agree with you but i dont think the gluten is all eaten and while it's late it's not impossible unless she going to stop acting in the next 5 years but if she plans to keep going for longer, she needs to go back to training like proper full-time training and taken on supporting role to build it back up. she needs to forget about the money aspect of it and focus on grounding herself more this is something she should have focused on since Ten Miles Peach Blossom. fox matchmaker is coming out so will see about that

Before, I was looking forward to this drama cause I usually like Qin Hao’s dramas. But I got distracted by 3 dramas that I am currently watching. Tender light, Imperfect us, and yesterday I just started Regeneration. Those are good and kinda heavy for me, so I need to get a break in between the episodes. But damn, regeneration exceeded my expectation. At least until 5 eps. Highly recommended

Someone mentioned that Yang Mi seemed to have lost the ability to coordinate different parts of her face to produce consistent "big expressions", causing such expressions to not make sense to viewers. Quite a while back, I read an article on famous Chinese directors discussing how the focus on idols and traffic celebs had affected famous acting schools/academies. Beijing Film Academy already had not been on the top of their list for some time. It put more emphasis on teaching students how to be/work as idols/traffic celebs as well as the business of being an idol/traffic celeb. It has been keeping up with the industry's trend but it's also not helping the industry.

Young artists should do one or two literary and other genre dramas while doing idol dramas. Otherwise by the time they are no longer suitable for idol characters and want to pursue new characters, they are too late. Their skills have regressed badly and not developed new skills either. It is just the sad truth of the current industry. The audience prefer young looking cute boys and silly girls. So the industry cater to that need in excess without thining about the quality cz what they need is money. Then the audence complans that they are overloaded with same old scripts, but it's too late coz there are real actors in formation

i do not agree that it's too late for her to change the direction of her acting career, if 45 years can leave their jobs to become software engineer, i am sure an actor under 40 can improve her process, and skills, your criticisms are valid but the conclusion that it is too late for her to change and improve is crazy specially because well she is not a 80 years old person

Yeah, I actually tuned off from Will Love in Spring when they introduced the first minutes the work of a mortician. Now, I have just finished 4 episodes. In one episode, however, I do wonder abt undertakers coming instead of the cops when a drowning victim was fished out ? Is this the norm in China, I wonder ?

@@naleenidas7734 depends on the case, I think. Criminal case? Yes. On-site-confirmed accident? I doubt, especially if the family has no doubts about the death cause. A lot of people, especially the older generation, do not like to let their loved ones get autopsied. For them it means they are not complete when they go down to the other world. If not a must, autopsy will be avoided. Plus I doubt in real life if there is enough manpower for medical forensics to do autopsy for each death in a country with such huge population.

I'm giving up on Chinese series. My children are skeptical when I tell them that Nirvana in Fire is one of my top 10 series (along with The Wire, the Sopranos, Breaking Bad etc.). Being older, romances with idol actors don't interest me at all. It's a real bummer because I can love actors caught up in a terrible scenario (the legend of Shenli) but most of the time it's the actors and the scenario that suck. AvenueX is right: how can you imagine a spy trained for years being portrayed by a woman with no muscles? Other countries, other directors would ask the actors and actresses to show physical abilities that match the roles. Joy of Life is my last hope, let's hope I won't be disappointed.

My opinion is that all those pretty boys & girls should work on their acting skills lol. I hv stop watch their dramas just wasting my time. I prefer the good veterans actors and actress who knows how to act and makes the dramas watchable. Lots of people are complaining of liu yuning that he's ugly & so on.... I felt that he's the very promising actor, he's very natural & only thing is that he doesn't dress up well.... If only he can improve his image, that's perfect. He's good.
