Maynard's vocals on Pushit were on fucking point. I love this song. Why can't people just shut the fuck up and listen without making snide comments about how they sound. They've been around longer than some of you have been alive. Show them a little respect. Not every show is going to be on point. Not every album is going to resonate with fans. Quit worrying how the new album will be if and when it becomes available. Just listen, and realize that a band of this caliber is still able to make albums, and as a fan, I'm eternally grateful for that.

I had my near-death motorcycle accident here in New Zealand in 1990 when I was 26. Ultimately I lost my entire left leg plus hip and left side of my pelvis plus I suffered numerous other internal internal injuries as well. I failed to negotiate a right hand bend on the open road at speed and I fell off my bike and slid in to a farmer's paddock concrete fence post where I instantly amputated my left leg at the knee. I wasn't knocked unconscious. Spent 2 weeks in the Intensive Care Unit of 2 hospitals. Spent a total of 101 days in hospital. I recovered relatively quick as I was very fit from being an athlete; road cyclist and marathon runner. I continued in sport after my accident and began competing in half marathons using crutches on my one good right leg. Then I managed to complete a full marathon on crutches on my one good right leg in 1992. I completed 2 full marathons on crutches in 1994. During the second marathon held in November a friend pulled up alongside me on the other side of the road (he was a fellow road cyclist). As we were both into music he yelled out to me 'Hey have you heard this shit man?' And he cranked his car stereo speakers to max volume. I could hear some pretty cool rock music that I had never ever heard like it before in my life. I yelled out to him 'Who is it?' He yelled back; 'TOOL - it's their first album titled Undertow'. Now at the time I was feeling a little fatigued during my marathon. I think it was about the 25km mark and I had 17km to go before the finish. I guzzled some flat (degassed) coca cola down with carb shots - great instant energy. I could feel my energy pick up and while listening to TOOL - Undertow the energy of the music seemed to transfer in to my mind/body/soul and WOW did I crank out the next 17km on those hospital use aluminum alloy elbow crutches!!!!!! I thought I was going to FLY! I have never forgotten that marathon on crutches in 1994! My friend stayed with me for like something like all of Side One so I listened to 'Intolerance', 'Prison Sex', 'Sober', 'Bottom', 'Crawl Away', 'Swamp Song', 'Undertow', and maybe '4 Degrees'. After that marathon I went and bought the Undertow CD. And I have been a dedicated and loyal Tool listener ever since. I completed 6 half and 6 full marathons on crutches on my one good right leg from 1991 to 1998 all over here in New Zealand. Thank you TOOL very much appreciated. LOVE & RESPECT to you all.

Tool is my favorite band. There were times when I only listened to Tool and considered the rest of the music world as insignificant. That said, I fear that Tool have lost their edge, especially after watching this great vid. Don't get me wrong. There is a reason I consider Tool my favorite band. I love them. Best drummer, best riffs, best bass lines I've ever heard. Best lyrics ever. Best songwriting. Tool created magic. Tool are their own genre. However, Tool are only Tool because of Maynard's anger and angst. The vocals make them special. But Maynard has grown up. He is 50 years old. He is not angry anymore. He doesn't scream anymore. He found peace and got rid of his demons. He seems relaxed nowadays. Good for him. Bad for Tool, or at least for the band called Tool which I love. Well, I hope the new album ( which will be released in 2018 or so...) will prove me wrong. But all things must pass. Tool will always be the best band ever. Long live Tool. The real demons of Rock!
@ulfricstormcrow407210 жыл бұрын
It's the same with Black Sabbath, btw. "13" is a good album. But Ozzy is not angry and mad anymore. He is just an old man. Old Sabbath were great. Iommis' riffs, Geezers' bass licks... And Ozzy, the Madman. The hopeless addict, the idiot, a confused soul. He made Sabbath so special, although he was never a really good vocalist. But he had the vibe. He lost it. Again, that's not his fault. He is not a 25-years-old idiot from Birmingham anymore, he is a senile millionaire. Maynard is neither senile nor really old. And I'm sure he is still a great vocalist. But is he still angry, does he still have the enthusiasm to give EVERYTHING for Tool? Perhaps he's just grown out of it and is sick and tired of fans like me who expect too much and dream of times long gone. I can't blame him...

***** I'm on an endless quest, looking for music which has this magical "toolish" vibe, giving me goosebumps... I found glimpses of it in bands like Karnivool, Isis, Katatonia, Codec, Life of Agony and many others. But nothing comes close to Tool or the emotions transported in Maynards' voice, so I mostly end up with A Perfect Circle anyway.... ;)

Hi, ToolArchive. Thanks for posting this. I remember first time I heard Forty Six & 2 (on a CD in my car heading into a Naval base for work!!) . . . absolutely blew my mind. First time I heard The Pot some years later I was equally blown away (also in my car . . . hmmm). Sure, as other folks have mentioned, Maynard's voice is not what it once was. The kind of singing he does is not kind to the throat, and he might not be in the best physical shape either, which affects the voice. Danny is a monster, of course, and Adam is such a refreshing change in style from the norm. It's Justin who absolutely SHREDS his instrument, though. It's too bad that bass doesn't translate as well in a bigger space vs. on the studio tracks, but that guy can absolutely bring it. He's playing over (and with) all that killer odd time from Danny as well . . . amazing!! Stylistically very different from another of my favorites . . . Rush . . . but the rhythm section reminds me of Rush with such a solid and very, very active bassist/drummer combination over odd time.

The only thing that saddens me is that you really can hear that Maynard's vocals just aren't the same as they were 10-15 years ago. But, that's what happens as you get older I guess. Just hope it won't reflect itself on their album. Great upload anyways Archive. Thanks.

It is age. I have to say, his voice is better on this than when I saw them on the 10,000 days tour. Much improved. I'm fortunate to have seen them from the Undertow days onwards. Lateralus was his peak, but I still love the silly old fucker :)
@theotherrobzombie10 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of factors come into play w/ a singers vocals while touring. I usually check before I buy tickets to a show if there's a day or two break in between and the weather from where they've been to where I'm seeing them. Extreme differences have different effects on people I suppose. Age is partially to do w/ it too but some singers still sound amazing to this day.

Seeing them for the 10th time this May 2019. Cant wait. I’ve seen APC 5 times. For those that say Maynard is losing his voice, go to a live show. He is 54 years old. He is the best live singer I have ever seen. I’ve seen them all. Vedder, Cornell, Staley, Grohl, Etc. By far MJK #1. Plus, he’d kick everyone’s ass.

Paul Rizzo Maynard’s voice now compared to 20yrs ago is night and day. He rarely screams now like he used to. Danny is the straw the stirs the drink, not Maynard.
@paulrizzo1955 жыл бұрын
Actually, Danny is my favorite drummer and a total beast. I never said Maynard was the “straw”. Tool is a collective talent. You remove one member and it’s not the same. Maynard isn’t the same guy he was 20 years ago and has pursued a different style with APC. Like I said, you won’t find a bigger fan than me, but it’s a collective effort.

I don't like how he is singing through the megaphone for all of Vicarious....I don't understand why is is doing that?? I'm also curious why Tool Archive chose that version of Third Eye When he screws up the beginning so badly...I'm under the assumption this video is a culmination of the best moments of 2014 correct?? I appreciate you doing all you do though...Thank You ;)

it is the vocal effect of the song, why else? it's like asking why does the guitarist use a guitar amp with distortion....
@Savantjazzcollective10 жыл бұрын
tes420 lol what a crack up, ask a stupid question & get a stupid answer. It is the voice effect he uses in the studio numb nuts. The song is about the obsession with media and technology so he is drawing parallels with his voice effect. ugh... why do I waste my time on you?
@tes42010 жыл бұрын
Savantjazzcollective Your wasting your time because you are trying to convince yourself of your own Bullshit...I didn't ask a stupid question because on the studio and Live versions he usually only uses a Chorus effect with a little delay...since around 2010 he started singin the song through the Megaphone and it sounds like SHIT in my opinion...So I asked a straight up question to get other peoples opinions, NOT to get some Wiseass response from another typical Overly Pretentious Tool fan who thinks he knows all there is to know about the Band Tool!!! So take your overly pretentious "SavantJazz" Attitude and go shove it up your ass ....DICK As you can see in 2006 you don't hear that Obnoxious megaphone Tool - Vicarious Live 2006 HD (Music Video & Cinematic Remaster) Peace

All the vocalization in this concert, was awful. What a shame...

***** I agree, I saw them do Ticks and Leeches back in 2012 and it was much more appropriate for the megaphone to be used... But, my point here was that it sounds like shit in Vicarious...and yes, the rest of the concert sounds better after third eye and Vicarious

When he started using the megaphone to perform ticks and leeches live people got all pissed and his explanation was simple. I'm older and I don't want to damage my vocal chords. I'm not as angry as I used to be and don't really want to perform every song where I scream through the whole thing.

i heard that the song "lateralus" was built around the fibonacci sequence. is this true?help.

thanks TA..cheers.
@Yich119 жыл бұрын
reksub10 I know this is a late-ass reply, but I just saw your comment now. Fibonacci sequence goes as follows (1-1-2-3-5-8-13-21-etc...). The lyrics of this song as follows (count the syllables): black then white are all I see in my infancy red and yellow then came to be reaching out to me lets me see. Also, the fibonacci numbers form a sort of "spiral" when math is involved (you can google it) and this song he sings "spiral out" throughout. Hopes this helps as a response. I also heard that he starts singing on a fibonacci number (in seconds?) but I've never actually counted this on the studio recording yet... maybe I will someday soon.

@jerremy britton...cheers for typing out the lyrics.yeah I've since discovered more about the sequence and this band..a twofor .lol. cheers again mate.

@ChefRojo9 жыл бұрын
reksub10 The song uses the spiral (specifically the fibonacci spiral) as an analogy for the exponential growth of human potential and experience. The time signature, lyrical rhythms and, more profoundly (for me), the actual lyrics

I'm a huge fan here but haven't gone to a tool concert since 1992. And the opening song is the reason why here... 90% of this audience don't even know the name of this or what this song is. It's been like this since Stinkfist came out. I saw Tool OPEN up for Henry Rollins in St.Louis at Mississippi Nights - a venue that holds about 200 people. Tool came on about 15 of us there knew and loved the Undertow record and of course followed them to now. But I am convinced that most of the "fans" going to Tool concerts have never watch their old DVD players magically skip ahead to hidden tracks on their works of art or have studied the new technologies (Mandala Drums evolved from the Simmons SDX Brain that ran off of floppy discs for the Ænima / Lateralus recordings and that era or that David Bottrill took their sound to an entirely new level - listen to Ænima (the track) with headphones and "Learn to swim" spins around your head...)... These are not real fans in these audiences in my opinion just from the ways their bodies and energies don't react at all to this music (not saying there should be moshing or headbanging... you can just clearly see they do NOT know this song) and that's disturbing because you know there's some 17 year old kid that knows every chord, every lyric, every break, every build, etc to every song that would kill to be there - and you would just know from his or her energy. I knew it was the end for us true Tool fans when I was living in Huntington Beach, CA and 3 of the biggest douchebags in my building came down to my garage as I was tuning my Rototom Drumkit and actually asked me if I was going to see Tool in L.A. that week bragging that they already had tickets. I made a decision to never purchase another concert ticket knowing that the crowds are filled with posers and that the real fans are just supporting this awesome band remotely by truly studying, enjoying, and applying the meaning of their music to an actual reality to live with an open "THIRD EYE" in every day life - something 90% of the people in the audience in this video know nothing about judging from their "what the fuck is this song? when is "Sober" going to be played?" body language. Love Tool, can't stand the halls filled with such posers... Keep it shoulder-deep Toolians.

To me music is more important to a person in the sense that it has affected their lives. If a person only knows/likes one TOOL song but they associate it with some important life event then it is every bit as spiritual, deep, and real to them as someone who feels that way about them all. I associate a number of TOOL songs with my life because they have been a great part of its soundtrack for the last two decades.. I have so many memories, good and bad, that come to mind when I hear this music. I delved into the ideology and philosophy of TOOL (as well as other bands) some of it I agree with and some I don't but in the end it is about the music. That's my take man, no doubt there are people at these concerts that have no interest whatsoever in the meaning of Maynard's lyrics but that's the way it goes.. it does nothing to diminish the music or the message.
@anthemgunaether29149 жыл бұрын
AsaphProject Very well said AsaphProject. I am humbled by your clear vision and ability to put it into words. My take is still that I would rather experience Tool's music (and other quality artists like them) in the company that lean more toward "knowing/understanding/engaging in the band over all" than just one or two songs. But I definitely understand your point of view and thank you for taking the time to compose such a thoughtful and balanced point of view. All the best to you!

This is the most pretentious comment I've ever read. Knowing a band in their early days doesn't give you more credibility to liking them, appreciating them, or seeing them live. If you are so concerned about what others around you at a concert are feeling and doing then maybe you should focus on the MUSIC and not on the crowd. Hooker With a Penis is a song about a fan like you. Enough said

I saw them on this tour. This video captures what it was like when they played "Intension" and they dropped the confetti onto the crowd really well. Being on the floor during that was pretty epic. I wish I would have seen them multiple times on that tour so I could have seen it from up in the seats.

Is this amazing audio track available as an audio CD somewhere? I'd love to be able to import this high quality concert into itunes and listen to it. :D Thanks TA for all your hard work. As usual it sounds great.
@Matteo_the_Plague_Doctor10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. I asked because in truth I was actually being lazy. I could just use FreeDVDsoft's youtube to MP3 downloader. it lets you extract the original audio, so if its in wav or MP4 or what ever you can then just import it into Audacity, cut it up and track it out. But that takes me the better part of the afternoon. I figured TA does so much with this stuff he might have a copy of it already properly tracked and named that I could just go download it. But if it's not available I'll have to grab this and chop it up into the proper tracks myself. Thanks for the information though. I'm interested in learning more about this addon. I use firefox to. What does it do? =D

***** youtube compressed the audio when you upload a video. The material ToolArchive worked with to make this probably has much better audio quality; it would be awesome to have just the audio.
@chochosmx10 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks for the info. So as long as you don't do anything with the resulting track, you don't degrade its quality any further. But if you want to split it to separate each song, etc then you have to decompress and recompress it later... but as you say, it's better than nothing.
