I was 15 in 1998 and a big fan of Undertow and Aenema. I didn't know about Opiate. Somehow, in those early days of the internet, by way of crazy luck- I managed to connect in some fan chat room (remember those???) with a guy in Arizona who said he had bootleg VHS tapes of shows for sale. I sent 25 bucks cash through the mail that I had earned cutting grass and I more-than-half expected to be simply scammed. However, about a week later, a thick padded manila envelope arrived with a copy of this very show, plus most of another one (London 7/21/94). Watching Maynard dance and pull off the screams live and pour his heart out on stage forever changed my perspective on music and what it was all about. I thought the actual performances were awesome, but even then I was underestimating just how good they were. The set lists are powerful, and the songs were not "old" yet.... Danny and Adam are perfect, of course, but Maynard's vocals seem to be completely effortless and the emotional inflections are gorgeous. Plus, in this particular show, he appears to be genuinely happy and excited to be performing, opposed to his typically reserved personality. Tool concerts in recent years are still entertaining, but this was the Golden age. This is as good as it gets.

What an awesome story/memory....difference of past a current Maynard is that he’s just my psychedelic now and wants it to be about the music...u can tell his personality was diff back then, tryin to be center of attention, mr jokester, etc...he’s changed and is all about the music and wants people to feel It rather than focus on him.

It's really hard to epress the significance of seeing this for someone like me who was there that night. It was the 90s. People didn't walk around with cinema quality camera equipment in their pockets. When you went to a concert, it was a one-time experience. You would take it in and then leave knowing for certain that you would never experience it again. All you had was your memories. But by some miracle, it turns out some absolutely magnificent bastard was there filming. And that same magnificent bastard, or whoever ended up with the footage, decided to bless the whole world by putting on this magical video web machine. Now, here I am 25 years later rexperiencing something I thought would only ever live in my head. And it even includes the singing genitals I genuinely wondered if I'd made up. I can't thank you enough for this gift.

Roly Oliver I seen them at 98 ozzfest in deer creek amphitheater in Indiana, and this was the same motif. They hit the stage right when the sunset. There was a war between the lawn and pavilion. The entire lawn was ripped up & set on fire. People stuffed beer cups full of sod and lit them on fire, threw them at the pavilion. The pavilion would throw them back. There was so much shit getting thrown it nearly blacked out the sky. There was three huge fires. It rained. It was pretty much the best show ever & such an amazing evening.

I know most fans gravitate towards Maynard but the real star of this band has and always will be Danny octopus arms Carey.

I've gone to see TOOL 7 times, and never have seen them play Eulogy. But when they played Lost Keys into Rosetta Stoned for the 10,000 Days tour, that was nearly as amazing.

i wanna say this was the last year maynard performed as "the front man". I think in 1999 all his up front and center antics came to end and he moved to the side out of the lights.

paisteuser06 I really wish I could have seen them back then, my first Tool concert was in 2003 and by then Maynard was hiding in the shadows

Not sure what happened. Wanna believe that during the conception of Lateralus he had a different approach in the way he wanted to deliver the music live. Different style different direction. Lateralus had a new angle and i guess it didn't require Maynard to be the "Live Maynard" from 92-98.
@Xakslied4 жыл бұрын
paisteuser06 as awesome as early Maynard was the way he performs now is much more “tool”, he’s an instrument, not a frontman. Watching pusicfer and APC shows he certainly doesn’t lurk in the shadows lol

I just realized why this show is so damn good, look at their faces (maynard's especially cuz u cant rly see the others'). They're what a band is meant to be, friends jamming out, fucking around, making jokes, having fun and being dumbasses together. That friendship and fun is what makes bands like Tool, and basically any successful band so great.

1998 is to Ænima what 2002 is to Lateralus. The band at the end of their transformative album cycles, at the height of their abilities, adjusted to the jump in venue sizes, free to fuck with the setlist at will, on their way to disappear into extended periods of obscurity. Deeply satisfying to watch and always rewarding to come back to.

First time I saw Tool it was 95 or 96 I was 21 and had to go alone! Was very familiar with the Opiate EP and have seen them several times since. It wasn't really a concert, it was but it was also an Art piece! Being a drummer, seeing Danny Carey is always a treat!

I was at this show too. This was actually the second night in Sacramento. The first show sold out so quick they decided to add another concert. I would have missed them if they hadn't done that. I heard he wore a dress the first night.
