I've seen them 14 times live, absolutely incredible. i was actually at the show when they recorded this

This version is so insanely well done that no matter how many times I listen to this, I always at some point forget that this is a live performance.

Tool is amazing as recorded but I got to see them live in 2023. Tool, live, is hands down the greatest live show I've ever seen

I’ve seen TOOL live 5 times in the past 20 years. The last show I went to, they played this song live and now I can die a happy man! 💕

Tool is the only band that can take one of their masterpieces and turn it into another.❤ Tool freaking Tool! Also, who is steering you wrong on your Tool journey? You should hav listened to the studio version first.😊 The music is created first and then Maynard listens to it writes the lyrics.

When Tool writes their music, Danny, Adam and Justin write the music and then send it to Maynard to write the lyrics after he’s listened to the music…pretty amazing to me

I think the majority of push back about live versions is just due to the enormous amount of low quality recordings that are out there. There are a handful of super high quality live recordings, but not many

That's a fact!! Tool doesn't allow video recordings of their shows, so the ones you typically see are some ass-hats wobbly phone video!! LOL

The wizardry to create this sonic and lyrical masterpiece is simply mind-blowing. 3 live concerts in the last two years have fulfilled a 33 year bucket list dream! Excellent and insightful reaction! 🔥🔥🔥

It may have been mentioned in previous TOOL songs you've experienced, but TOOL does not allow people to record their live shows. Their reasoning is you take away from others experience when your phone is out and the screen is glowing for long portions of time. You also don't fully experience the performance if you're taking it in through a small screen in front of your face while the show is going on in front of you. Lots of visuals they spent time and effort to develop to add to the experience. They want you to be there in the moment and live it. They typically allow you to record the final song of the set, but outside of that you are subject to being ejected from the show. To counter this some will sometimes get creative with their recording. Most often to the detriment of the quality. In short, bootleg concert recordings don't do their live shows justice. Edit: typo

Theres a great live performance of third eye on youtube. I believe its from the same salival tour. Alot of cool closeup shots of maynard. Check it out.
We talk about Danny on the tabla, but hold Justin’s beer if when he comes in hitting digits on that bass.

Most live Tool videos have a subpar audio quality however I feel you should absolutely react to them, especially anything from their early days from 1992 - 2002. The stage costumes & theatrics are something to visually behold as they perform. Extremely powerful, to the point where you find yourself tolerating the poor sound quality to just see what Maynard does next.

I think you're on point. They're performing this 20 or so years after the studio version. It's their song and it's great how they can reinterpret it anytime they want. Possibly from City to City!

This is incorrect. This was in 2000 and the studio version came out in 1996

It's not the live versions that we don't like. They're unmatched when it comes to performing live. Most videos available on KZbin just sound terrible due to how they were recorded. They don't allow phones being out at their shows so there's not as big of a sample size as other bands.

Also this is not 100% different from the studio but isnt as "hard" as the studio version. Id strongly recommend you listen to the studio version, even in your own time, so you can see what they changed and what they kept

Hell yes! Glad to see you enjoyed this journey of a song Sohum! It’s interesting you say this song and tool at large is worth feeling and experiencing the musical playground they create. I only got into tool in the last 2 years or so and I found their music grabbing a hold of me and taking me for a ride so much so that I couldn’t grasp the lyrics until my 20th listen lol. Love your insight on this track

Someone else already mentioned all the crappy live videos. This is a studio produced live album. There is a big difference in quality. However, check out the live fan video of Stinkfist from Connecticut. Excellent audio, and it's the extended Stinkfist they do live. Video angle sucks but that isn't the point.

I commented before that my two favorite bands are Tool and The Warning. Completely opposite spectrum of the rock genre. Tool long, elongated songs that entrances. The Warning quick bullets in the sky that end too quickly and ask for repeat immediately. Tool, Maynard singing and no harmonies. The Warning’s fourth, fifth and sixth instrument is the vocal harmonies between the sisters. Both unique and capture my mind, heart and soul.

Also, studio version is very different, much harsher and angrier. This version is someone who has moved past that and is more forgiving

You mention we don’t like live performances. If you’re talking about your Holy Trinity video I think the problem was more with the quality of the audio recording. All Salival tracks and live Opiate tracks are broadly loved. PLEASE go back and re-listen to Holy Trinity but the studio version. It’s worth it.

Rick Beato just released a fantastic interview with Maynard yesterday on KZbin. He actually talks about his process in creating music. Check it out, it provides a lot of insight.
@aaronwolf35876 сағат бұрын
The musicians write almost 100% of the music before Maynard puts any work into it. He says that it’s about the music and that his lyrics and vocals are just for the kids that want the happy meal……..that’s not true and of course he’s just being humble but it’s part of what makes them special.

A lot of the live versions are done with lousy recording equipment. I also believe that a large percentage of tool fans are on the spectrum. We don't like our favorite things changed. Vastly different feel, he is in a much different place with the salival performance.

To summarize the push back because a few people mentioned. Music videos are bad for new listens because they are meant to be art paired with the music and rarely follow the plot. Because the bizarre nature a lot of people get distracted from the music. Regarding live performances a lot of bad quality and fans don’t want to hear bad audio. There are some old cleaned up full concerts in the 1990s I would recommend checking out. Some are just audio also that are with dipping into. I recommend the “Tool Live in Philadelphia 1992 Remastered. It’s from before their first album in a dive bar. They before their Opiate EP and is 45 mins long.
@Gideonite2 сағат бұрын
Oh yea also you should always check out Studio and Live versions, over time a lot of songs have extended or different versions. Pushit (This song) , Prison Sex, Stinkfist and Jerk off all have longer live versions worth finding.
@GideoniteСағат бұрын
Regarding how they write Danny & Maynard both said that all for write their own parts, parts they have written for years. Then Danny and Justin the bassist find a good tempo and they Jam. Adam then comes in and layers his rifts on their rhythm and then close to recording a Maynard comes in and listens to the Jams and writes his lyrics. He writes how the music makes him feel so it’s more real, he has gotten some beef for not writing any of the music but he is the singer and only a lyricist, some song Adam co-wrote.
@eggstu11 сағат бұрын
I think fans like Tool live videos but for a first time reaction, the quality is typically low, shot on some persons phone with people singing or parts missing etc. So for a reactor, its best to stick to studio versions. There are quality live versions that are great for reactions but most of them are muffled and crappy.

My op- if live versions of songs are better, why aren’t bands releasing live versions first? Plus I think the internal studio plays in our subconscious fills in the gaps while consciously experiencing the tasty new wrinkles. Regardless, wow! And wait till Sohum hears the lyrics. One of the lines I felt was, “You minimize my movement.”

The live concert videos aren’t good quality….because there not suppose to be any phones or video cameras during the concert …..this recording you are listening to was put into an actual live album. So the sounds is much better quality. The music videos is great art! …but if you are trying to react to the actual music. The visuals from video can be a distraction from the musical experience
