Yeah, it's difficult to remember when to play the variations. You play it to a backing track, you miss it and you immediately go "fuck, man!" and start over.

Hello young man. I promise this answer is not in any way facetious. You have to practice. It’s as simple as that. The timing of this part of the song is tricky. When I first started playing bass (especially Tool) I just practiced and practiced until I got the rhythm, tempo down. Eventually you will get it. This is not an easy song to play at all. As a beginner I would start with songs like Stinkfist which to me, has an easier groove with some pretty cool parts but not too tricky. Appreciate the question and let me know how else I can help! 🙏🏻
