Hey Thanks for the awesome videos. I watch all your videos I live in Australia and My wife’s home is in Kamphaeng Phet and I also love crayfish! I have a pregnant mother, she’s been pregnant for about 3 weeks, you can start to make out little black eyes. I have a tank on standby I will move them to when they start to run around. My problem is the temperature is often very high, and there’s not a lot I can do. But also i haven’t been able to grow much algae for the little critters and I worry for their survivability. Got any tips? Thanks again Toon + Leigh. Love your videos

BIG thanks Scott from Toon and myself. Shade netting to keep the sun off them helps loads. Floating aquatic plants also help to minimize excessive heat. Water hyacinth is great for this & it fixes the issue of having little to no algae. The craylings will stay in the roots and pick enough food off them to get going. Hope this helps 👍👍👍

do you put soil in the pond?
@TLFarm Жыл бұрын
Not to date but we have added raised areas full of sand. The baby crayfish certainly love exploring it.

Hi leigh and Toon, really good to see how well, the crayfish are doing. Once the babies are off the mother, i noticed that you put the mother in another tank, so are the babies self feeding straight away?
@TLFarm Жыл бұрын
If there's enough algae in the small tank then we leave them in there or a day or two before transferring them to a large cement tank. Depending on if we're running short on space, we generally empty 3/4 hatches of babies into a cement tank.

Great set up mate

It's taken us a while learning & tweaking things around to see what suits them best. Now we're at ease with the process & setup. They're flipping easier to raise than running a herd of 73 goats! 🤣

Great to see the Yabbies are thriving and you've made a small business from them. Have any of the locals gotten a taste for them and are buying them for their own home cooking?
@TLFarm Жыл бұрын
Cheers GavR, we're quite chuffed with how our crayfish set-up has evolved over the last few years. We've made a few tweaks along the way, but now it feels like we're somewhere near for what best works for us & for them. We sell enough to make it worth while but the main thing is to have an abundant great tasting food source always available. Unfortunately, crayfish are a bit on the steep side for locals around us. The current going rate is 1,200tbh per kg. When you consider that large prawns are 300 per kg, not many Thais will pay the extra premium (although they taste far superior in our opinion.)

Do you put aerators on your seperated berried females? Or none until the eggs hatch?
@TLFarm Жыл бұрын
We've done it with & without running airstones in each tank. They're absolutely fine without but we do have to carry our several water changes. We're recently ordered & stand alone solar air pump to hopefully be able to run everything that contains our crayfish. Obviously. the more oxygen in the water, the better.

I have seen people remove the eggs and put them in a egg tumbler. Have you tried this ? Is it worth trying? Enjoying your videos 👍🏻

Bro i see your crayfish while inside your bowls its oky with out aerator?
@TLFarm Жыл бұрын
We hatch them out with & without airstones running mate. Without you may need or wish to do a water change but we rarely do without an issues as long as you keep the feed to a minimum. Hope that helps.

@TLFarm Жыл бұрын
Red Claws unfertilized eggs turn a dull orange color & often you'll spot a few that have come free of the female's abdomen. Not sure about other breeds of crayfish though.

@TLFarm Жыл бұрын
We have used a simple airstone set-up previously but when we had too many tanks with berried females we tried a few bowls with air. The results were all successful. The only difference being that we carry out one water change (without scrubbing the tank) before the eggs hatch. In an ideal world, every tank we have would have airstones running 24/7. It's just a bit difficult with our farm being off-grid with limited solar power capacity.

@TLFarm Жыл бұрын
We have a quite a wide range of ranges. Our oldest males are approximately 3 years old. They typically live for about 4 years so we ensure that we always keep a stock of young males to grow on. We keep a lot more of our females for Broodstock.

@TLFarm3 ай бұрын
A small amount of air is preferable to keep the water moving. We hatch them with and without additional oxygen. Red claw crayfish survive in low oxygen environments. Changing the water in the hatching tanks once a week is more important. Hope this helps you a bit. Cheers.
