As far as Helga's exposé about her love, it was always intended to be reciprocated in The Jungle Movie. The issue was that Nickelodeon didn't want to make the movie, and Craig Barlett lost his rights to the franchise after leaving Nick. However, after thousands of signatures from fans (myself included), the movie was made. So, this relationship was always meant to have a response.

It kind of makes sense that they wrote it so the kiss between Arnold and Helga didn't mean anything. If this movie was originally supposed to be shown on TV instead of theaters, and the show ran for a few more seasons after the movie came out, the writers probably didn't want to change the status quo. The thing about most episodic TV shows is that the status quo never really changes.
@eap4154 жыл бұрын
It does mean something, Arnold now knows that Helga loves him. so now there's a permanent superficial air between the two which carries into the episodes after the movie such as the dance episode where you feel the sexual tension while Arnold and Helga are dancing together.

After the success of the Rugrats Movie, Nickelodeon got kinda cocky. The failure of this film set back Craig Barlett's plans quite a bit. it wasn't Craig's fault at all, it was all on Nickelodeon. ): this movie was originally three normal episodes, but fucking Nickelodeon decided it should be a movie, and they screwed it up AGAIN at making the movie for theatres, just for money. also, they decided to leave her confession as “heat of the moment” because Arnold wasn't ready to hear that. i mean, earlier in the very same day she still told him she hated him, just imagine that your all-life-bully suddenly confesses to you that she acts that way because she loves you. this was necessary because Arnold needed to think about it, he needed to understand his own feelings and analyze if he felt the same way about her or not. I'm not hating on this video, at all, and i really wanna see a video about the jungle movie. it's just sad for me to think of this, I'm still obsessed with this show and i love it beyond words, and i hate Nickelodeon for all they did to Craig and his show.
@trentonhamilton6454 жыл бұрын
Everybody remembers the show growing up, but the theatrical feature didn't hold up on it's own merit. The saddest part is that this film had a lot of creative ideas for the storyline, throughout the series, we see the adventures that revolved around Arnold, his classmates, his grandparents/roomates from Sunset Arms, and his neighbors of Hillwood dealing with their own issues, in this film on the other hand, it revolved around a tyrannical businessman who has contingency plans to develop a mall on Arnold's Neighborhood, which raises the stakes even higher because once that happens, every single one of those characters that Arnold helped in the past, would have to sell their homes, businesses, and move away, Phill even stated that him and Gertie would have to move to an old folks home, having Arnold to be sent in a foster home. That ideal premise alone could've outweigh the series tone overall, the only problem that holds this movie back is it's execution.
@livingabstraction22065 жыл бұрын
It's weird looking back at this movie. For years I refused to watch it again because I was bitter at Nickelodeon for not making the sequel, which was the movie Craig really wanted to make. *Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie* should have been the 1st and only one instead, but it was too late already... I'm looking at you, *Nickelodeon!* Can't believe a spin-off sequel was considered and suggested to MTV (of all channels) with Helga as a teen protagonist and without Arnold, not living there anymore after moving to another city; her life now revolving around her family, friends and classmates instead. It would have been called *The Patakis,* if I'm not mistaken, only this time having a more serious and darker undertone. ****EDIT/UPDATE****- Just recalled another bizarre, non-fun trivia: one of the tenants, a grown-up woman and lawyer named Lana Vail, happened to have the hots for Arnold (I cannot stress this enough, it is canon. According to Craig Bartlett himself, she was meant for comical purposes by causing discomfort to him when being around. Nick executives dissaproved his idea for obvious reasons.) Thankfully, her existence was short-lived after being discreetly removed from the cartoon during its 1st season... What the hell were they thinking by adding this character?! The crazy fact still baffles me to this day.

The reason Arnold, Helga, and Gerald are only ones with shading and highlights is because the decision to make this a theatrical release instead of a TV film was really made THAT late in production. The best they felt they could do in the time left was just giving them shading for the cinematic feel they wanted audiences to see this movie in, since they’d be who we’re seeing for most of the film.

His response was: "I remember Paramount wanted big "stakes" -- that kept coming up. "What's at stake?" So we thought, how about if the whole neighborhood is going to come down? I think if we had made the movie for theaters instead of TV, we simply would have spent more on time, animation, and shot it on film. The worst thing about the release was we transferred our video to film and it didn't look as good as it could have."

My only memory with this movie prior to your video was the bootleg vhs my family bought while we were spending the day in NYC, and I think that goes to show how little impact the movie had in my mind long-term.

I had fond memories of this movie too, but dammit you’re right. Are you planning a review for the jungle movie?

i think its a positive movie just lacking that final secret message to push it to great status...9/11 probably effected the movie making them want to be more comical and fun less extensional the way life was at the time...they clearly wanted to make a positive movie for the time cause everything was sad and bad...i kinda respect that

That Kiss scene was purely made for the trailer to get more people to watch the movie.

The part that frustrates me the most is that the movie had the PERFECT theme to both tackle its situation and capstone the show: Love. Familial, community, friends, romance- they could all band together to let the audience know that even when faced with losing their homes, the cast would still be fine because they had eachother, ending closer than they had before. The Arnold movie was RIPE for exploring the different meanings and ways that love can carry people through hard times. Really explore the climaxes and payoffs of the relationships we've seen throughout the show. Then it'd just need to have the movie end with everyone moving to a new neighborhood together, or renting a new building, or separating on good terms, or riding a bus into a sunset or some other cheesy ending. It could have been golden.
