Oh jeez... WOW! Okay! Disney was planning to switch over to CGI for some time before these movies even got made, and clearly they KNEW that this and the film before it (Brother Bear?) were pretty damn weak. They knew that the reviews would suck and the box office draws would be low, and obviously they were banking on these two films being sacrificial, leading to blaming the bad reception of weak movies on why they went CGI. But it was all planned before hand, and they decided to send off the line of movies on klunkers. Hilariously, their CGI movies weren't that good either until sometime after. Then again, their first CGI film was the boring piece of shite Dinosaur that barely made any money and was still considered "successful" enough to over merchandise and shove down movie goers' throats.

I'm like the only person on the planet that loved this movie as a kid And looking back, this movie is alright. Saying it killed 2D gave it too much credit. And I kinda love the main bad guy BECAUSE he's a simple man who just wants to yodel. But taking my nostalgia goggles off, it's nothing to write home on the range about, I just don't wanna be like "THIS IS FROM WHAT USED TO BE THE MAC DADDIES OF ANIMATION HOW DARE THEY-?!" You know not everything has to be Klaus.

I liked this movie as a kid too. It is fine I guess. The main villain and his minions are the only things of note in this film for me. Everything else in Home On The Range is kind of boring, but serviceable in general.

I actually did see Sinbad in theaters and a sentimental moment attached to that movie is that we stopped by my grandmas house before going to see it and as somebody with cerebral palsy those were my first steps without a walker.

There needs to be more writeups on KZbin like this one, about these flawed films, rather than all those boring dunking contests on less popular work. I feel like I got more out of the exercise of reviewing The Good Dinosaur than a consensus film like Toy Story, for example. I really like how fair you are in presenting what works and doesn't work (like the sad sheriff song part), and why it is the way it is. Great video, Tariq. That line about the film not having any character really hit hard.

FUN COW FACT! You can actually herd cows by singing. It's an old art in Finland I think, but it can be done. Cow's love pretty singing, so it actually fits that. Also the original plot had Slim steal cows to tremble down the White House so he could become the president because him mom kept drilling in that he'd be president when he was a kid and the story had more of a fairytale feel to it and was even told in song by three mariachi monarch butterflies, which gave it some more humorous charm

⁠​⁠​⁠@@loganmosher5935 Disregarding the fact you capitalized all those words, I agree the White House plan felt too political, and might end up comparing Slim to Donald Trump. The Revenge plot felt more fitting, considering the story they went with in the end was more like a Wild West retelling of “The Pied Piper of Hamelin”. Don’t just take the Willie Brothers’ word on their Uncle Alameda Slim being “a Pioneer Pied Piper in 10 Gallon Underpants”, there’s more to it in subtle ways. 1. The Three Main Heroes represent handicaps of three types of children. Maggie is the crippled child (when we met her, her flashback shows she was left behind, and didn’t leave her spot, despite Slim’s hypnotism), Mrs. Calloway is the blind child (literally blind with rage, whenever someone messes with her hat), and Grace is the deaf child (tone-deaf, that is, as she is immune to Slim’s yodeling). 2. Slim said he owned the finest ranches in the land, but his bosses never appreciated his talents; an allusion to the Pied Piper being ridiculed over using music to do a job they asked him to do. 3. When the Cows met a Rabbit named Lucky Jack, his backstory was that he use to live in Echo Mine, along with multiple rabbits, until Alameda Slim flushed them out (implying the mountain was their safe haven, and Slim ridding them with his yodel led to their deaths); it’s an allusion to the Pied Piper’s reason of being ridiculed, ridding the rats with music. And 4. Slim’s hideout, Echo Mine, is reminiscent of the Piper’s hideout being Koppelburg Mountain, where he would drown the children at the Weser River; the Railroad in which the Black Market Train arrives at is given a similar role to the Weser River.

To be devil's advocate, I never interpreted the villain's motivation as "they never let me sing so I buy all your property" and more like "I was a worker and in every place I ended up overworked, underpaid and with little recognition for the importance of what I do, so I will take the land I worked so hard on because thanks to my efforts is rightfully mine" followed up by dumb singing joke. Then again I watched it in Spanish so there may have been translation differences or something.

No Maria, I’m pretty sure the former fits him with the Pied Piper motif. They think his yodeling was a ridiculous thing as a rancher, even being used to hunt down rabbits (presumably being paid to hunt them) that he tries to get back at them for not appreciating fine art. It's a cliched trope, yes, but I feel that a villain that chooses to be villain through unappreciation is a better motivation than turning into a villain just because.

as someone who genuinely loves this movie, saw it in theaters, and watches it at least once a month for the nostalgia, i agree with everything y'all said here. and a lot of the issues regarding plot and framing really do just kinda expect you to pick up on things and build off of subtext. it's abstract for no reason and a lot of the scenes you guys had issues with, as you said, needed more time or flashbacks because so much of it was just kinda implied. for example, the scene where the sheriff gives buck to rico actually does convey a closeness between the two in the form of him teasingly describing a horse as buck pantomimes in the background. it's a great joke and shows that the sheriff has a playful friendship with buck as well as gave him a chance to tell the audience how fondly he thinks of him by describing him as fast, strong, and smart. but of course you had to catch the subtext meaning it was hit or miss and needed better execution. there are so many instances of this throughout the movie and because of those, along with the visual framing and how many stories were packed together in so little time, i feel like the movie should have been a show and not a full film. there were a lot of interesting things going on but none of it had the time to breathe so like, it's a bad flick. i love that shit but i also have a personal connection with it and deadass used this movie to cope in foster care cause it was a mood. i can't say my love for it is anything but biased and my ability to fully sympathize with the characters wasn't purely due to knowing first hand what that kind of loss and how strong the desire to get your home back is like. legit the only other people i know who went as hard for this movie as me were someone who lost everything in a house fire and another kid who's family's house foreclosed around the time it came out. i swear this movie was made for kids who liked westerns and lost their homes in the early to mid 2000s and no one else. everything y'all said was absolutely right. like the movie is just purely eye candy unless you had the right mindset while watching it (homesick af) and were willing to stretch your brain to fill in the gaps. and that ain't really much of an audience. i wish it could have just been a short or a cartoon because it wasn't horrible. just badly executed. thanks for finally doing this and also for beating me to the stomp the yard joke, you saved me from myself, bro. also i love KP's username, friggin iconic and same. this video was great and it's rare not to see people talk about home on the range in a way other than "the movie that killed 2d animation". it didn't and thank you for taking the time to acknowledge the how good it looked in many places because it doesn't get much credit. it was, however, probably the movie that killed kid's movies with satisfying plot resolutions. i will blame it for that, even as a person who likes it.

Same. Personally I like to think of this movie as having a similar problem to Raya and the Last Dragon or even the Little Mermaid imo. Both movies didn’t have enough time to flesh out other characters so it makes their inclusion kinda forced and not actually interesting. And yes I do include the Little Mermaid because her sisters are hardly in the first movie and only like three of them appear in a cut away scene in the sequel. That’s one of the things I actually liked about Ariel’s Beginning is she had a more interesting and deeper relationship with both her father and sisters and how their mother’s death not only affected their familial relationship, but their kingdom when Triton permanently banned music as a way to cope with the pain. Ironically enough I find Ariel so much more likable in this movie than the original BECAUSE she helped her father let go of his wife and finally heal, through finding the music box and Triton realizing he was doing more harm than good for his family by banning music, and realizing how sad and heartbroken Athena would be. If this movie had been a Disney show instead, I think it would’ve been too similar to Nick’s Barnyard, but it would’ve given more characters to interact and why their owner Pearl means so much to them, and how exactly she makes that much money to pay for the expenses. I know it shows she sells produce and assumably milk and eggs, but there’s still no way that’s nearly enough to pay for everything

What’s better than an allegory for the Pied Piper? You got a bad guy who hypnotizes loved ones to be taken to his secret mountain hideout where a mass murder is held, the three main heroes represent children with handicaps, the bad guy does this crime because he wasn’t respected for his talent, and even flushed out vermin that people hate.

Actually the original draft was supposed to be Alameda using an army of cows to overtake the White House and become president lol. I find it more ironic the director Mike Gabriel was the one who came up with the idea, and he’s the director of Pocahontas, another movie that could’ve been so much better. Even if it hasn’t aged well for some, Pocahontas still holds a special place in my heart and I wish more people at least appreciated what it tried to teach than complaining about what its not (historically correct)

I had 1 DVD to watch as a kid because we were broke as shit. It was Home On The Range. It wasn't great but it does hold a special place in my heart being one of very few movies I got to watch as a kid. I've also watched it like 15+ times because it was our only DVD.

Too bad it didn’t get much attention, and worse the series got canned and got turned into Milo’s Return. Personally I don’t think the sequel is as terrible as everyone writes it off as, but I really wish we got to see more of Kida as the new queen of Atlantis and how Milo’s presence has improved their culture

I loved this movie as a kid because I lived beside a cattle ranch (I’m from Texas so makes sense). I definitely think that the movie should’ve been written better (or just be a direct to DVD). They could’ve made it more character focused so we can understand the characters more. The characters seem interesting and their designs are good, it just needed better structure. The bad guy’s motivation should’ve been “my previous employers overworked and underpaid my works so I’m getting revenge by buying their land” or something like that. The yodeling/singing can still be used because it was used to herd cows.

I'm not even going to lie...I freaking loved this film as a kid. I thought it was HILARIOUS and I still have super fond memories of watching it. I don't care if it is good or not, it was a really fun ride and I appreciate it for that much. I remember reading that the original plot would have a young bull and his owner going to a ghost town where the villain would have not only a rogue cattle wrestler but a psychopathic murder, and the film was originally called Sweatin Bullets. I think the plot was changed because the executives thought the plot was way too dark.

In the dvd extras for this movie there is a jokes section and one of them Rosanne cow just comes on screen and says "Hey does anyone have opposable thumbs? I need to be milked!" and it was so jarring it still haunts me to this day

When ever I see this movie, I think of tenchi muyo. You see the big cow is like Ryoko, the prim and proper cow is like Ayeka, and the tone deaf cow was like Mihoshi. They seem so freakishly similar. Tenchi muyo for cows I thought in 2004.

Something that kind of represents the whole movie: pretty much every animated Disney film up to then had a scene _exactly_ like 26:25. It also doesn't help that this was around the era that audiences started to realize how formulated and trope-y the Disney formula could be and how blatantly they'd been leaning on it, especially after Dreamworks' lampooning of it was still fresh in everyone's minds.
