What about Bryan Cranston? his real rise to fame happened in his 40's when he played Hal on Malcolm in the Middle, and didn't become an award winning actor till his 50's when he played Walter White As well as John Lithgow and JK Simmons.

Judi Dench may not have been world famous when she was young, but she was fine all over. At 14 I saw her on PBS playing Titania in of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Her costume consisted of a few carefully-placed leaves and a sprinkling of glitter. I remember it to this day, almost 50 years later.

All these people saying 40 isn't old... That's not the point. The point is that usually actors and actresses get discovered and become famous in their 20's or so, but the folks in the list somehow had beaten the younger competition and became celebrities we know today. It's not about how old they are, it's about how great they are at their craft.

Ian McKellen was in The Keep (1976). He was more a supporting actor than a star, but that's the first time I saw him. He remains one of my favorite actors to this day, along with Bernard Hill, Liam Cunningham, Iain Glen, Patrick Stewart, Brian Cox and Christoph Waltz. I was hoping John Lynch would rise out of obscurity after stealing scenes from Sean Bean in Black Death. He's amazing.

I have found memories of french actor Louis De Fines, who became well known for his roles of short angry frenchmen. He was comedian and played small roles before Le Gendarme de St. Tropez - starring him as a leading actor - kickstarted his career in age of 50.

Most sources I've read say that Christoph Waltz is an adherent of the Meisner technique, not Method Acting. Other than that, good list, and it really shows how long time it can take for an actor/actress to get his/her big breakthrough
