I'd put the penultimate episode of the series higher than Honorable Mention -- I think it may be my #1, in fact. It includes some of the best scenes of the series, not to mention Robert's immortal line: "Golly gumdrops, what a turn-up!" :)

The very best scene: when Matthew proposed to Mary, in season 2, episode 9. They are standing on a patio, with snow falling, very beautiful romantic scene. First-rate script, probably the best scene in Downton Abbey! ------ I would like to see Downton Abbey continue. It was over too quickly.

I was expecting number 1 to be Mary and Edith arguing then Edith started calling Mary a "bitch. Not content with your own life so you are determined to ruin mine." Great list. As a huge Downton Abbey fan, here are my top moments from the series: Ethel's affair with Major Bryant and the baby Thomas kissing Jimmy in bed and saving his life later on Edith and Mary apologising to each on the day of Edith's wedding Anna and Bates', star-crossed lovers. Both of accused of killing someone. Sybil and Tom eloping and standing up to Lord Grantham Lord Grantham's affair with Jane Moorsum Mary's new hairdo Lady Cora's affair in Season 5 because of her love with the paintings Lord Carlisle gets owned with a punch from Matthew Sybil wearing trousers, attending the march on women's right Thomas and his crazy affairs with Duke of Crowborough, Edward Courtnay, and being a big brother to Andrew Thomas attempting to end his life Lord Grantham throwing up blood during dinner Edith being the head of Michael Gregson's company

Series II, Episode V 04. Series III, Episode IX 05. Series II, Episode IX 06. Series III, Episode IV 07. Series V, Episode IX 08. Series IV, Episode IX 19. Series IV, Episode III 10. Series VI, Episode IX As you can see, a majority of the episodes I have chosen in the top half come from series 3, which I believe is the shows strongest. So yes another one that stop watching after the first episode of series 4 as I just wanted to see how Mary was coping with Matthew's death. Didn't go back to watch the rest until last year. It was ok but just not the same and so while I'll definitely always go back to re-watch the show again, I know that I'll stop when I get to the Christmas special for series 3. RIP Matthew Crawley. Never Forgotten 😭

Why? Matthew's exit was one of the best things to happen in the series as it gave Mary's character a brilliant future. It would have been so boring to have her and Matthew just happily married for another 3 series.

@@AudreyMealiff Bc they were just killing off everyone at that point. The first episode made sense with the cousin dying on the titanic bc it started off the series. Then the turk in Mary's bed. Then Matthew's fiance, then sybil, then matthew....it was just too many deaths in a short period of time that I thought the writing was getting stale for me.

@@AudreyMealiff Sybil could've moved to Ireland with her husband, but then effectively you get rid of Tom. I understand you had to kill off Matthew bc there couldn't be any other way to continue the story without that actor (unless you recast ala Darren from Bewitched - which i wouldn't like). I can't help my feelings though. I was starting to lose interest in Season 3 and then those deaths completely lost my interest.

So I agree with most of your picks, certainly 2.9 as number #1. But I would have left out 2.3 and those from series 4. Really the best episodes came from seasons 1-3, with 1&3 being stronger than 2, but with picking up in the end with 8&9. After Matthew died, the show just tanked, especially with all those horrible suitors for Mary. Though I did love Edith’s happy ending.

Those last 10 seconds are the most important 10 seconds of the entire show. It signaled a groundbreaking change that re-formed the series for better or worse. I personally think it was beautifully crafted and showed how brave the show could be.

I've got to be honest, I never cared much for Matthew, so his death wasn't all that bad... Of course not good, and poor folks who were watching it at the time (on christmas non the less) but I was always just rooting for Mr. Bates and Anna :D
