I actually did not like Mario 64DS. Controlling Mario in a 3d space with a d-pad feels really bad. Even if you play it on the 3DS with the joystick, it still doesn't feel right because the game was programmed for 8 direction movement.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia It manages to remain incredibly faithful to the original (Fire Emblem Gaiden) while overcoming its most frustrating elements. The visuals are gorgeous, the soundtrack is beautiful and it was the first Fire Emblem game to have full voice acting.

Yeah I really enjoyed the game and the unique elements it brought to the table. I really got into the two adventures playing out at the same time coming together and everything was greatly enhanced. After the great inclusion of full voice acting, I knew expanding on it with Three Houses was going to be a winner. It's a shame that many people didn't seem to play SoV because it was a fantastic remake alongside Metroid 2 that year that really felt classic but included fresh new elements like the visual novel/dungeon crawling elements compared to the games in the series I had played beforehand that stuck to story sequences between battles sections. I knew FE2 was unique and took a Zelda 2 approach with a sequel that played differently but I found it very compelling with how they chose to update everything as someone who has no nostalgia for the original being that it was never released over here. I was someone who found the remake of the first game Shadow Dragon to be good and faithful but somewhat lacking in updates and enhancements compared to the GBA games to make it stand out more than it being the first classic game featuring the story of Marth. That made SoV all the more fantastic with how they approached remaking it for a new generation but made it feel faithful and contain the classic feel of an older FE game. I just hope they consider remaking Path of Radiance due to how rare and expensive it is. This year has had a lot of JRPG remakes and updated versions so I hope that more FE remakes will come after Three Houses to make some of these amazing games that made the franchise so iconic and beloved have a new opportunity to appreciate.

I can agree fe echoes is a solid remake. The things they added like new charcters, the combat skill system, and full voice acting were welcome changes. Some of them even now will seem to become Staples in the series. Also berkut was an excellent addition to the story. Not just because of the downward spiral that happens throughout the entire game but also he showed us what dumas power was (The mirror scene and his final boss fight). Also the music is good. Heritors of archadia is my favorite song in the series. And berkuts themes are also solid. I want the next remake in the series to be geneology because oh my if they put voice acting and cutscenes in it. It would probably become the best fe experience story wise in the series. And seliph for smash because it would mean geneology remake would be announced. The amount of hype the announcement would create would probably be compared to or surpass oh heck the leaks were real in the timeskip reveal. I would also be fine with binding blade or tellius remakes since there rather Japanese exclusive or hard to obtain.

If there's a remake I would highly recommend to you, that game would be Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia. This game is a massive leap when it comes to the 1992 Famicom game FE Gaiden and stayed true to that game. There's so much you could love with this game. The updated graphics, the story and dialogue, the soundtrack and THE VOICE ACTING is music to my ears, the 3D dungeons with it's fatigue system, the little bit of content with the amiibo, the post-game content and the introduction to combat arts. If you're still playing games on the Nintendo 3DS, all I'm gonna is this "PLEASE give this game a shot before the 3DS is about to reach it's deathbed". That's all. Stay safe and have a nice spring season. 👌😎

Gonna pop in here and say that while Echoes' presentation is off the goddamn charts and it introduced the Turnwheel mechanic that I will be forever grateful for, the fact remains that staying as true to the original as it did really didn't work out for the better in a some cases. The map design (one word: SWAMPS) and a few of the outdated gameplay elements *(especially* cantors) were definitely things that Intelligent Systems should have taken some risks on.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fuelled definitely deserves a place on this list. A graphical overhaul of the original game with added online play would have been great. Nitro Fuelled does that but also adds 21 tracks to the original's 18, a bunch of different kart types (42 and counting), 42 additional characters (and counting) and a whole host of customisation options for those karts and characters. It has also added new game modes and challenges for the most dedicated of players. It's not just great fun to play but also a clear labour of love by the developers. For the first four months it was out I played it pretty much every day and since then I've played it at least a couple of times each week. It's really great.

I agree with you on all of those parts but sadly, greed overcame the publisher/developer and they broke their promise to not implement microtransactions and keep it player friendly by introducing them AFTER they got all positive reviews and praise. That was one of the shittiest things to do and yes, it affects the gameplay since unlocking karts or characters, after that introduction, required more than double the amount of grinding than before. So sadly for me and many others, it should not be in a top 10 remake list.

I was like 6 years old back then and had no clue, but the cover art made me suspicious. Still I bought it and just realised at home that it was the wrong game. Had lots of fun with it anyways - from today's point of view it's the better game anyway, since DK Land has too ambitious graphics and bad controls, that make it hard to play if you're used to the DKC trilogy ones. DK 94 though still plays fine and is really creative with all the puzzles. For me the definitive version of that original kind of Donkey Kong. The original is just way too short.

@@Easelgames Spyro franchise was technically dead for over a decade with only exception in form of controversial Skylanders Academy (Spyro's Adventure shouldn't really be included here as he doesn't really play any role there). Remake of acclaimed games from four console generations ago was decent way to jump start new era. And for reminder they can't do the same for PS2 Era and Legend as both are seriously flawed. They would need make brand new game, the question is if we come completely with something new (what may or may not work) or pull best from mentioned and use that as transition to new era? All I would say here is that there is still story to be told. It is how I would do that (I use three act structure, what could be whole trilogy or one game, depending on needs). So: Act-1 A Hero's Tail - After events of reignited Spyro and Sparx back from vacations on Dragon Shores. They find own home in chaos and after swiftly defeating Gnork, they learn from young dragon Ember (who is main support) that Red Elder Dragon went insane and open tomb of Dark Aether becoming new Dark Lord. Other villains join his side and attacked. This would give us opportunity to reintroduce Elora, Bianca and Hunter as supporting cast. But most villains would fall relatively early and final fight and main fight would focus on Red. Before entering temple Ember coincidentally reveal that she is doughtier of Dark Lord, but Spyro ensure her that it doesn't matter. They enter temple and try disable weird device over dark portal. Spyro shut down force field, but Red appear and battle begin. Spyro win and lecture Red that he shouldn't do that to his doughtier. Dum, dum dum. Red is confused and say that he doesn't have one and on top of that he actually attempt to shut down portal, but everyone ignored symptoms when it start opening, forcing him to use force. Spyro run to temple and see Ember attempting to destroy device. He tell them that she shouldn't do that, but dum, dum, dum. She start laughing as absolutely did intend to open portal, but couldn't shut down light aether force field, so she used Spyro. She break her necklace turning into black elder dragon. She destroy device and almost kill Spyro, who is saved by Red. Act-2 Eternal Night - Red is badly hurt, so he has no other way as give his fire aether power to Spyro, who as purple dragon can master every form of aether. He also tell him that his name is Ignatis and that black dragoness name is Cynder. This time dark aether corruption spread over whole land an Spyro need find other Elder Dragons as only they could could defeat Dark Lord again and seal portal. But they are lazy or something, so they dump they powers on Spyro. Because this time Spyro and Cynder actually has history, they encounters would be more common and both sides would try convince each other (she would usually send mid-bosses and make power showcases). Also after final battle, dum dum dum... Spyro try save her but both are pulled into dark portal. Act-3 Dawn of the Dragon - Spyro and Cynder are saved by Chronicler (real black dragon), who Spyro initially incorrectly mistake with Dark Lord. Chronicler reveal that he and Malefor fight over control of dark aether who try usurp power form him, but now neither has advantage. Young dragons are only ones who can tip over balance so he intend keep them under his protection, though sadly they world would fall under control of the Dark Lord. But young dragons don't agree and escape traversing between dimensions (we have light, then dark and now weird..er versions of they world). Then young dragons finally confront Malefor finding truth about ourself. This Star Wars rip of is good enough, so we don't need change much (though I would make some Skylanders reference, because not everything there was bad). Anyway, Malefor is defeated, young dragons reborn in new reality and considering his work as finished Chronicler give his position to Ignatus (what I remind is canon), so he become new ruler of Underworld. But that is just my. If Activision would be smart or pull another hack is up to them.

Odin Sphere Liefthrasir is an amazing remake. It remastered the art, made it widescreen, redisgned some sections of the stages, added mini-bosses, added a chef in the middle of the stages (which is a lot bigger of a benefit than it initially sounds like), and vastly improved the frame rate. Oh, and I guess completely revamping the entire battle system to make it much faster, much flashier, and much smoother while still giving you the option to play in the more sedately paced OG style should also be mentioned. Similarly, it's spiritual sequel got a really good remake/remaster in the form of Muramasa Rebirth, which have the option to have jump mapped to a face button instead of just pressing up (which real it makes the gameplay better, IMO), gives widescreen support, and gives a much better English translation than the Wii original. And if you count the Rebirth-exclusive DLC, you get pretty much an entire game's worth of new characters, each of whom have their own unique playstyles, stories, bosses, and two emails each, and intertwines with the original story as well, for about 20 bucks total of you picked up each of the four chapters in their release date.

@@lnsflare1 I know the combat is completely different, but it's still not a remake, because it's the same game running on the same engine and using the same assets, a remake instead must run on a new engine and rebuild all the assets anew(thats literally the meaning of the word remake). I think a correct definition of it is overhauled porting, that appened alot in the past, look at Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, the gameplay is completely reblanced and has a different feeling with towns of new abilities to use, but was still the same on his core running on the same console, i was just an enhanced/overhaulsed version of the same game. Remember, just because something is different in another version of the same game doesn't mean it can only be a remake or a remaster. Another example is Metal Gear Solid 3D on 3DS, it's basically the same game running on the same engine with just touched up textures, but the gameplay is REALLY different from the original MGS 3 on PS2, it look more like MGS 4 on PS3, but it's the same game, not a remake or a remaster, just an improved/divverent version of the same game.

It was the only Fire Emblem game i dropped out of boredom, and will never finish. It's inherent lack of strategy elements versus it's predecessors, and laughable difficulty and class balance marks it as an awful gameplay experience, ultimately ruining what could have been a good game. It homogenized and oversimplified everything, and if i could rollback most of its decisions, so they would be forgotten by later games i would.

@@spartantnt1023 Echoes' root issue was that gameplay-wise, it was a bit too faithful to Gaiden. None of the terribly-designed maps were changed, and some of its more annoying aspects were left untouched. But I will say that outside of Dread Fighters still being the single most disgustingly broken class in the game (barring *maybe* Killer Bow bow knights), quite a few of the other classes did get rebalanced. Archers traded their effectiveness against armored units for effectiveness against fliers, and Falcon Knights don't just delete any terrors they fight anymore. If you don't grind and play on Hard, I'd say it offers a decent challenge, though (unless you're not going for a no-deaths run, in which case just throw Alm at everything - oh, wait, you can't, you're doing Celica's route). I also appreciate them keeping the weapon triangle out of the game, since there are no playable axe units and lance-wielding classes compose almost half of the opposing forces post-act 2. Not to mention that IntSys learned from Shadow Dragon's mediocre reception and made sure to implement support conversations. Don't diss the turnwheel, by the way. That thing was probably the single best anti-frustration feature that the devs ever added to the series.

Ys III: Wanderers of Ys got one of the best video game remakes ever IMO in Ys: Oath in Felghana. An incredible touchup with a new combat system making an incredibly challenging but fun action adventure while also pushing the game's already incredible soundtrack to its utmost limits. @Karifean

@@stephenobrien6983 You mean as a remake or as a game? As a remake it's a seriously impressive effort in tying things together from the different Ys IV games into a modern game while keeping true to the stories overall as well *and* tying it into the Ys eldeen/darklings narrative. Major respect on that front. As a game, well, it's kinda outdone in everything by Ys VIII and while it was an important step in getting there it itself does lack memorability a lot. It's still a solid game, but not as good as its peers IMO.

As soon as I saw HeartGold/SoulSilver on the list, I had a feeling of excitement like "Yes, he gets it" because I 100% agree it is the best Pokemon remake we've ever had, and possibly one of the best Pokemon games. When I was a kid I loved Silver because the upgrade from Red and Blue was so big and being able to revisit Kanto was such a cool surprise. None of the other games captured that same feeling for me until they remade Gold and Silver in Gen 4, and not only included everything I loved about the originals but added on to it to make it even better. I still wish they'd give us that Pokemon following you mechanic again, it was such a nice touch that's sorely missed.

I've gotta show some love for the underrated *Ys* series, and Falcom's excellent remakes of its first four titles (all of which are now available on PSN, Steam, and GOG): I) & II) *Ys I & II Chronicles* is a Super-Mario-All-Stars-style remake of the first two Ys titles. Gorgeous graphics, a superb soundtrack, and plenty of attention to detail make this entry the definitive version of the series' debut entries. It's no surprise that these titles keep getting re-released -- they're great for short bursts of fun. III) *Ys - The Oath in Felghana* is an amazing accomplishment: it takes the arguably-worst game in the series and rebuilds it completely, turning it into the best entry by far. Imagine if Nintendo remake Zelda II: The Adventure of Link using the A Link Between Worlds engine -- _eight years_ before it released A Link Between Worlds -- and created the best Zelda game in the process. The Oath in Felghana is far more ambitious than a remake of Wanderers From Ys needed to be (and mops the floor with Taito's attempt at a remake released that same year). IV) *Ys - Memories of Celceta* is a curious case. Since Falcom outsourced development of Ys IV to two different studios (resulting in two wildly different games), they decided to make their own 3D remake that synthesizes the events in two wildly diverging stories into a single timeline. Imagine if Nintendo decided to take the Philips CD-i Zelda games and remake them in the Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask / Twilight Princess style, and improve the legacy of the games. I'd be remiss not to mention Falcom JDK's incredible music. It's no exaggeration to call it "aural sex". There's damned good reason why those of us who grew up with the TurboGrafx (or joined in on the fun shortly after the TG-16's heyday) absolutely love Falcom's work. Also, Makoto Shinkai handled the opening animation for the remakes of the first three games. If you're a fan of Your Name, Five Centimeters per Second, or Weathering With You, you can see how he got his start as an animator.

While I am looking forward to playing the RE3make and FF7R, I have to say, there was a charm to the fixed camera perspectives in older games that the new ones just lack. It's incredibly frustrating, the way people arbitrarily view that type of visual design as outdated, having no place in today's games. Holding the mistaken belief that, when it comes to what the player can see and control, more always = better. And of course the industry follows suit on that opinion. But there is art in restriction. Where many might call the fixed style inferior, I call it having focus. The camera doesn't have to be flitting around all the time. Using fixed perspectives can also highlight the environment and evoke mood in different ways than when the camera is simply always over the character's shoulder, a singular viewpoint. Especially in a horror game. My point is, no matter how detailed and impressive modern game environments may be, they're not "better" than the fixed, pre-rendered backgrounds you see in the first REmake, or the PS1 FF games. Those had a quality like paintings, gorgeous mise-en-scenes. And to say they've become obsolete and have no place in games today is as absurd as saying paintings are obsolete because we have photos or movies now. For RE and FF to abandon them completely was disappointing and unnecessary.

Lacked details in terms of complexity of sprites itself. Cackletta lost half of her's expressions... Especially her final boss form is way less expressive. Bowser in Bowser's Inside story lost clear hexagon lines that were present on his shell... And his jaw become forever dislocated on his battle sprite - as in he NEVER CLOSES IT... And there many many many examples of it - overall new sprites look better on new hardware BUT they have way less life to them, less animations and less attention to detail overall. What is the point of remake if it downgrades the charm of original instead of preserving it?

Why remake a game that is already playable on the 3DS to begin with? Not only was the remake redundant and unnecessary, but the original played better and some would argue even looked better. Worse still, it sold horribly and was likely the final nail in AlphaDream’s coffin. @mistertagomago7974
@mistertagomago7974 4 жыл бұрын
Havent played it but the original has aged well enough and I dont see why it needed a remake. Already controlled well, had great level design, top notch AI, and it looks nice enough for a 3d game in 1998. In some ways its aged better visually than Half Life 2.
@cloroxhammer3289
@cloroxhammer3289 4 жыл бұрын
@@mistertagomago7974 "...aged better visually than Half Life 2"? Now that's just very wrong. Visually it's far behind Half-Life 2 and is quite outdated. That's why Black Mesa exists: it elevated the original's look and play. The gameplay isn't that great though in my opinion but visually it surpasses the original game by a mile. So I'll say that Half-Life definitely did not age well graphically and the remake did the graphics justice.

@@cloroxhammer3289 The original doesnt give me weird uncanny valley vibes like the second game does. Something about thos face models in HL2 is off putting while in the original thet never bothered me while playing the game. Besides that that both look pretty fine especially for the time. I havent played the Black Mess remake so I cant judge it but again I'd say the original looks good enough and plays perfectly fine so it seems pointless to me compared to stuff like old Resident evil games which actually control like ass and look much more wonky.
@cloroxhammer3289
@cloroxhammer3289 4 жыл бұрын
@@mistertagomago7974 Are you serious? Half-Life is quite outdated graphically. The only thing that pushed it a bit was the HD models pack. You can easily see polygons on characters and they have no expressions whatsoever like it's just another normal day at Black Mesa research facility. Don't get me wrong, I love Half-Life. But as much as I love it I can't deny the fact that graphically it's outdated and that Half-Life 2 is much superior in that regard. Not to mention, they upgraded their physics engine in HL2 so you could also pick up and throw stuff using either your hands or the gravity gun making it a more fun experience.
@mistertagomago7974
@mistertagomago7974 4 жыл бұрын
@@cloroxhammer3289 Looking older doesnt equal looking worse. Sometimes more advanced graphics age worse because of stuff like uncanny valley which is the case here for me. The faces in HL2 are more advanced but I find them more offputting. I'm not the only one to mention this. If you wanna argue which game is better though I'd give it to the first Half Life because of the stronger level design, better AI, and it felt less gimmicky. Both are still among the best games ever though imo.

@@feliperodrigues5437 As much as I love Dark Souls and Bloodborne (Sekiro was fine...), Nioh 2's combat is a huge step up from those games. It's way more versatile and skill based. There are combos and interchangeable skills that you can change up to suit your style. There are a myriad ways to make different builds that far exceed what you can do in any FromSoft game. It's really not even close, Nioh 2 has a better combat system. However, From Software still knows how to put together a world and atmosphere better, and I still prefer their games overall. I really appreciate the improvements made by the Wind Waker HD. The graphics are the one thing they didn't really need to change, but the new style of imitated cell shading still works. What's more significant is the improved mechanics with the Wind Waker, a more streamlined Triforce shard quest, and the quick access item menu removing any need for the game to ever be paused.
