Now keep in mind I'm not saying these are the worst video game consoles themselves, it is the launch and the reception we are talking about. The most infamous of these launches is the Xbox 360 and it's red ring of death.

How can you talk about the Vita’s failure without mentioning the memory cards? Those were one of the biggest things that turned people off from buying a Vita because of how ridiculously overpriced they were.

And Sony throwing it out when it wasn't an instant hit. At least Nintendo tried to keep the 3DS afloat after it's rough launch. Both were discontinued in 2019, but only the 3DS had Nintendo with it til the end.

Yeah no kidding, i never bought one at launch because of it, plus the library of games at the time wasn't my cup of tea at the time, though i did buy one used later on and enjoyed the little sony machine, i ended up playing a lot of it's exclusives including Uncharted Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush, also some third party games like Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate which i enjoyed immensely and am glad that companies have ported most of these games to other platforms, now if we can just get Persona 4 Golden and Uncharted GA to do the same...

Yeah, this is the biggest reason the Vita failed in my opinion. At launch, one did NOT come with the system, though they were required for saving on many games (I got my first one in a bundle, and my second one on a great sale), to this day they are still only made by Sony, where the PSP got 3rd party versions that were much cheaper, and since the launch of the vita, there has been only one price drop, where the 64GB card that cost over $100 dropped by $20, so it's now normally between 80-100.

Was it equivalent to the console version? No but for what it was it was a fun experience to burn through a few rounds without having to boot up the playstation. And even if you had to choose between 60fps and 3d I thought both options were quite impressive. Jirad's right in that it's not exactly the system seller it needed out the gate, but for what it's worth I enjoyed my time with it.

"The Gamecube library never really ended up feeling like it caught up to where it needed to be" ... what? The GC had probably the strongest third party support of any Nintendo system before the Switch. It's library was HUGE and stacked to the nines with classics, of both the multi-console port and console exclusive varieties. Now, if you're talking in terms of console sales, well yeah, that was the era of the PS2 which dominated so thoroughly that the fight for second place was an order of magnitude behind, but that was hardly the fault of the library.

Yes, but when compared to it's predecessor the Nintendo 64, which had an absolutely massive library of games and an incredibly long life span, the NGC wound up looking quite pitiful in comparison. not looking for a fight, cuz I loved my gamecube, played that thing into the ground.

Was it really? More so than the wii? I find that hard to believe, I don't doubt that the gamecube came back and had many good gamess. It also isn't competing much with previous consoles since there wasn't that many 3rd parties, the only notable ones being Capcom with Megaman, Konami with Castlevania, and Rare, Sega had their own console and wasn't 3rd party yet, Namco mostly kept to the arcades, X Box didn't exist to compete with the NES or SNES and PlayStation was towards the end of the SNES life span, and I don't know how the N64 did, probably about the same with 3rd party games. It did have good games though, RE4, Fire Emblem, Melee, Mario Sunshine, even though it didn't do well Luigi's Mansion still has a lot of love, Pokémon games Sonic Adventure 2 (I never had the dreamcast and played it on gamecube), Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were made to work on it, Phantasy Star, Mario Kart Double Dash is still considered one of if not the best MK, Mortal Kombat, Soulcalibur 2 on gamecube had Link, so yeah plenty of good games.

GC undoubtedly had some classics, but the numbers feel low comparing to its predecessors. If I try making a list of 50 "essential" GC games, I'm already unearthing some weird shit and outdated sports games past the 40 mark. Still an awesome console, but it's surprisingly hard to find as many worthwhile games to complete as on N64 and SNES.

The point was that it didn't end up doing much that the DS couldn't already do. The 3D gimmick was dropped laughably early by literally every developer but Nintendo and its subsidiaries, it wasn't all that much more powerful in its original iteration, and cost more than double what you could get a DS Lite for at the time. It wouldn't be until the New 3DS that it got any semblance of a leap in power that made what it could do more than a slight step above its predecessor.

And? Once again. That's most consoles. The PS4 and One are barely leaps over their previous gen, and were underwhelming performance wise(hence why we had to have a Pro and X version). And they did nothing new, or unique. Unless you count uploading short gaming clips and screenshots as a huge feature. The Wii is laughable in terms of an upgrade, but it's still another console. A gimmick such as motion controls doesn't mean much, and most of the best games on the Wii, barely use the motion controls(treating them more as a tacked on thing). The 3DS may have not used its 3D to full potential, but the games running on the 3DS, couldn't run on the DS. And even if you could get a blocky, low frame rate version onto the DS, have fun using that D-Pad for games made with a circle pad in mind.

Funny enough, when I was younger I looked at the 3Ds and thought the same thing. It was just like my DS but it had a camera. And as far as next gens go, I think it’s more or less about what the console is made of. They seem like such small leaps in features but the hardware was what was different. It was to prep the consoles for next gen gaming and experience. Like better graphics from the previous console and tools like the PSVR and the Kinect. And as far as the Wii goes, it offered a lot more games and even the Mii feature as well. Suffice to say the Wii was a huge leap. But I think the 3ds is viewed in such a way because it looked the same and really didn’t look like the new big thing.

A lot of the earlier 3ds shovelware and third party titles were also on ds so it makes sense a lot of the games would look similar but I feel like the more time went on; the 3ds games for the most part look markedly better graphically than any ds game

I agree with this. While neither Vita or 3DS launched well, post price drop 3ds proved that there was still a place for a dedicated handheld. Sony on the other hand basically threw up their hands and walked away. Even now mobile gaming is inherently limited. Sure anything touchscreen based can be played just fine, but the lack of buttons means you can't play a game like Super Mario Bros or Zelda without compromising the gameplay. And the attempts at making gaming phones just resulted in poor phones. I've got a controller clip that works well, but since most people don't have that most games aren't designed for it. (Although it is a neat and surprisingly effective way to play the Ocarina Randomizer)

Memory cards are an issue; same with the charging cable. Proprietary components are terrible ideas. (One of many reasons to hate Apple products), but the PS Vita could have done fine if developers would have just made some more games exclusive to the console, but I get that is a risk for them. Sony should have tried harder.

@@Kaiser8513 well, people mostly mean handheld/home console hybrid I think, and Vita didn't have any TV connection functionality, so it's just a fairly powerful handheld with some streaming options. There was supposed to be a cable for that, but it never got released.

@@Kaiser8513 In what way is the Vita a console hybrid system. You can't hook up the Vita to a TV and then connect 8 remotes to it. If you're going to count owning both a Vita and a Vita TV (which i wouldn't counting on how it has a horrible blacklist built in), then you might as well count the Gameboy paired with the Super Gameboy. If you're just talking about it's power, the Vita didn't even match half the power of the PS3. So with that logic the Gameboy by itself would be a console hybrid system as it actually had a faster processor than both the NES and Master System.

The Vita’s performance in the west post-launch breaks my heart. I bought my Vita on day 1 and still play it all the time (and even vastly prefer it over my 3DS) because I’m one of the few who love a lot of the games in its library... most of which is RPGs, visual novels, and rhythm games. All of which are big in Japan, and not so much anywhere else. But I still love my Persona 4 Golden, Tales of Hearts, Danganronpa, and Hatsune Miku.

i still love my Vita, playing the older Persona games on them were amazing, playing 2-4 on them. you could get so many great psp games, the dangonronpa games, i enjoyed it for visual novels. like the psp the vita was much biger in japan. which is unfortunate cause its an amazing console

I thought that the worst console launch was the Atari 5200 back in 1983. Launched with easily broken controllers, games nothing more than updated Atari 2600 games and at a time of the market crash. It was a console that was a disaster on many fronts and it was an early sign of Atari's demise as a console manufacturer for the decade to come.

The Dreamcast absolutely did not have a bad launch. It was a commercial failure in retrospect, but at the time, sega was on their way out of the console hardware market. The Dreamcast's successful launch is what allowed them to literally continue to breathe safely for the next year and a half after.

@@GmodPlusWoW I considered it as well at first, but many Wii U games function as if the second screen was seperate object from the first, being placed in different positions, requiring motion controls and such. If the peripheral has the option to be wireless however, that raises the chances of it being able to play Wii U games as well which I hope it can, because I have a few games (Xenoblade Chronicles X for one) that I want to play only available on the Wii U as of now.

Restricted by battery, memory, and cost. Feels great to hold and beautiful to look at, but inconvenient when its main appeal to casual consumers was convenience. Maybe Sony will make that ultra reverse compatible handheld squeal one day, but i appreciate the switch for now.

I got used to it pretty fast. Loved it in the games and was a unique experience. Playing Kid Icarus Uprising with 3d on is some of the most amazing experiencies in gaming i've ever had. Resident Evil Revelations, Ocarina of Time, Kirby triple Deluxe were awsome too, but Kid Icarus stands out.

Second, that statement is irrelevant, if not outright contradictory; with or without the 3D effect the 3DS was a new generation of handheld beyond the original. Hyrule Warriors is a downscale from the Wii U; it's miraculous that it runs on the system at all and I certainly would never consider the 3DS the ideal way to play it. It also is bad design to leave the 3D enabled at all if it is that unstable, because the system is perfectly capable of disallowing it (as it often does with Pokemon X), so your argument is objectively false. Every other hardware manufacturer makes iterative hardware. Nintendo made iterative hardware for multiple generations of home consoles. The Wii U is itself debatable in that observation, as until its last year or two many people were still getting more mileage out of the remotes than the pad. The DS, in fact, was their ONLY handheld system that was not iterative. That standard is applied selectively and is therefore invalid as a criticism. Then maybe you can apply those skills to the topic at hand and figure at least some part of it out for yourself.

The Saturn came to me during my teenage years. It was a magical system that always pissed me off cause of the system's launch, advertising, and everything with it was handled so poorly in America, while in Japan it was doing amazingly! I loved the Saturn to its dying days. From importing to getting the last of its days coveted items (Magic Knight Rayearth, Pazar Dragoon Azel, Shinning Force 3)... it was my favorite system... now it's at my #2 spot after the Switch. I still love it.

I feel the bigger problem with the Vita was the Memory Cards, and was a major sore point for most people. On top of the high price point, you had another high price point product which was a required purchase to play or download any games to the console. Those proprietary memory cards were, and still are way too expensive. The biggest mistake and blemish of my gaming life was trading a Turbo Duo for an Atari Jaguar in 94. I still regret it to this day. You also missed another HUGE issue with the 3DS, like the Wii U, their names. Because of Nintendo's naming conventions, people thought they were just a DS and Wii with added features/tablet and not an entirely new console. This was so confusing to people that they had to put up posters and pamphlets everywhere explaining the difference and comparability between the consoles.
