+ChrisFix you say every little bit helps well I often worry the rinse bucket will cause the towel to pick up some of the dirt defeating the purpose why not make a bucket with a filter and a pump that filters the same water from the bucket constantly and pours it out at the top so you can simply rinse the towel over the bucket ??? you should invent this

0:13 Don't take your car to an automatic car wash. 0:47 Don't clean your car in direct sunlight or intense heat. 1:22 Don't use kitchen soap to clean your car. 2:18 Always use lubrication when cleaning your car. 3:20 Don't use a paper towel, beach towel, sponge, or an old rag on your car's paint. 3:44 Always clean from top to bottom. 5:26 Never clean in a swirling motion or in multiple directions. 5:44 Always use two wash buckets, one for soap and one for rinsing dirty towels. 7:13 If your towel touches the ground, don't touch your car's paint with it. 7:38 Don't put any slippery protective chemicals on your steering wheel, shifter, or pedals. 1:54 Bonus tip 1: Always clean out your wash bucket. 5:03 Bonus tip 2: When using a towel, always snap it out to remove loose grit or other debris. 8:04 Bonus tip 3: If using a weather/vinyl protection chemical, spray it on a towel instead of directly onto the interior of your car.

Great video Chris! I would like to add using a leaf blower or vacuum in blow mode, to remove the water from the car surface. Living here in Canada, when it's well below freezing in the middle of the winter, and the car is covered with a thick layer of road salt mixed with dirt, there's no option but to do the drive through car wash. Yes, it's definitely not the best thing for the finish of your vehicle, but it's far better than letting that salty dirt sit on your car for extended periods of time.

I would love to know what brand was on those labels! Keeping it a secret is one way he probably stays in business, but actually knowing precisely how to get the maximum "clean and shine" would be the legitimate secret, especially if an electric buffer is used. One can really make a goopy mess if wax isn't applied correctly. A buffer can screw up the paint and ruin the finish if one has never used a buffer, esp. with dark colors.. Ask me how I know this LOL! Very little pressure is necessary for outstanding results. And NEVER use a buffer to remove polishing compound!! I don't recommend even using a buffer and I no longer do. The swirl marks that resulted from buffing out the compound were unsightly and really made the truck look like s**t. I've found that cloth diapers make excellent polishing cloths, if you turn them often and use several. My favorite polishing product is "Nu-Finish" and gives great results, when directions are followed.

Hi Chris. I always enjoy your very helpful videos. But let's go to #5 in the video. Great advice on what fabrics not to use. However I was told long ago that towels are fine for use on cars as long as they're ALL COTTON. They shouldn't be a blend of cotton and man-made fibers such as rayon, orlon, or nylon as those are actually hard. I remember when my wife bought some new bath towels and the darned things wouldn't dry you (absorb water)., They would just push the water around on your skin. Sure enough, I looked at the label and they were not all cotton. Of course it makes sense that a man-made fiber wouldn't absorb water and may actually scratch paint...

Chris is right on how to clean your car. I see many people cleaning the bottom of their car to the top rubbing the cloth all around their car in cleaning their wheels then dunking it in the water repeating the process going up the side of the car? End result... super scratches. Who washes the windshield after the clean the lower half of their vehicle. Duhh. Don’t use a second bucket. Rinse your cloth off with the hose before you dunk it in the soapy water. For sure you know it’s clean..

Always remove wristwatches (especially with metal bracelets) & rings before washing, detailing or waxing a car . Rather than mircofibre on wheel rims, use a soft broad hand brush after applying brake dust remover. Use brush wet with a liberal application of car soap (not dish soap) . For stubborn road tar deposits, soften the tar with olive oil (yes, the cooking type). Dab & leave for a few minutes. This will soften the tar & allow it to be removed easily . Whatever you're waxing, you can't beat Collinite - detailing cars for over 30 years, its the best wax there is for shine & longevity

I've seen somewhere detailers recommending a very-soft-bristled paint-brush to gently remove dirt from around mouldings, seals, & door-frames, etc., but use a seperate smaller paint-brush for cleaning badges & tailights, etc., where they're plastic or adjacent to exterior paint. Goes without saying that you rinse these thoroughly as you clean! &B^{D?

I agree with Addictive_LiquoriCe - AmmoNYC has a good video on using clay bars. I've been using them for a couple of years now, and clay is dead simple to use and can make a massive difference to the look and feel of the paint. Clay can remove a certain amount of fading (it mainly removes "stuck on" dirt that washing won't remove), and won't save you from having to mop/buff the paint if it's badly faded or has light scratching. It will though, help make it easier to buff and the feel of the final after polishing is like really smooth glass.

Jeremy quiring There is a difference between a spray head on a hose, and a power washer. go to your local stall style car wash and place your hand in front of the power rinse (no really dont do this)...a quick swipe can remove skin and muscle tissue. It won't slice your hand off (unless you worked on it for an hour or so), but it can hurt you quite severely. If you don't believe me, either myself or another local ER nurse will be greeting you shortly

Addendum to ChrisFix Guide: 1. Tear off the tags on all microfiber towels before use 2. Use higher quality microfiber products to prevent scratches 3. Emphasize using a quality wax or sealant. Its the first line of defense against paint damage. 4. Using a grit guard. I think the CG grit guard is the best ones IMO. Regardless having something to "scrub" the towel is key. 5. Do not wring out your wash towel over the clean water bucket. Instead wring it over concrete so you don't reintroduce loose dirt into your clear water. 6. I would recommend using a higher quality soap with more lubricity. Adams or Maguire's products at least. ArmorAll & Black Magic's soap will not get you results. 7. Read the instructions on the soap and follow the portioning guide. It appears he put too much soap.

8. Don't breathe around the car, the microscopic water particles in your breath may scratch your paint. 9. Invest in a clean room, airborne contaminants also may scratch your paint. 10. Use only purified deionized water, as contaminants in the water can leave water marks, or scratch your paint. 11. In fact, don't ever wash your car, your car being in the general vicinity of soap and water may scratch your paint.

Having a man who's a "car guy", I learned all this! As someone stated, don't wear anything that can scratch the car when washing; for me, I don't wear any shirt with buttons on front. Also, and I sometimes forget, don't roll down your windows for the next 2 hours because there is still water there and will mess that clean window. I never thought of the two buckets which would be great b/c the bucket of soap gets too gritty. Also, I only use car soap but when my normal one was sold out b/c of a sale I had to buy a high end more expensive one, and I'll never go back. It's worth the few extra bucks and is nominal per wash. Take Pride in Your Ride!!

I wanna be the kind of driver, who takes his car to mechanic regularly, and not one of those crazy 'anti-synthetic oil crazies'... it's a proven way to keep her running smoothly and keep her in good shape! I plan on keeping her in the garage, but I won't keep her from living. Maybe we'll go racing together, if that's what she wants! Or she can just be a Sunday driver! Or even post pictures on 'car sites' I dont judge.. I'm not entirely comfortable with her interior, and her engine being online for the world to see... but if she chooses that path. I'll support her. also you could get a bucket insert which has a bunch of holes in it and traps the dirt and debris in the bottom. I have one in the bottom of my bucket and rub my wash cloth against it and then do a quick look over of the cloth before using it on the car again.

Do you ever clean the under side of your car, besides just aiming hose and spraying the bottom with water? Also, for those who live in areas of country by beach(salt in air) or very cold environment(salt on roads), what are your feelings on doing a undercoating to prevent rust?
