Do you know that in the first time in history, all 4 belts from the cruiserweight division will belong proudly around the waist of 1 man

Really enjoying this series! Rummy,FYI, the reason why the division wasn't part of "The Ring" rankings for a few years in the late 80's was because the magazine took a hard stance against the sanctioning bodies in two ways. 1)Only recognize one champion,and where possible, it's the lineal champion. That's why they didn't consider Tyson to be the champion until he beat Spinks. 2)Revert to the 8 traditional weight classes. This meant that the cruisers got rolled into the heavyweight rankings. You'll see the same thing when you reach divisions like super middle, super welter etc.

solid vid. I agree with your belief on the cruiserweight division being a stop on the road for future heavyweights. I always felt if they created a super heavy division it would do the same to heavyweight
@robertdecker4780
@robertdecker4780 4 жыл бұрын
Such an ignored division. Used to be 176-190,then it went to 195,then 200. I remember they had junior Cruiserweight for a certain period, and I think they even had super Cruiserweight, back when regular cw only went up to 190. 176-200 really is a heck of a range though, as is a 205 lb small heavyweight fighting a 250 lb'er.
@johncollins7423
@johncollins7423 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct, there was a Super Cruiserweight division for a brief time, but it never really caught on. It's minimum was 191 lbs., with a maximum weight limit of 210 lbs. The Big 4 (WBA, WBC, IBF & WBO) didn't sanction this division, so the IBO was the sole sanctioning body that had a championship in that weight class.

I wish this division would grab mainstream attention. Size-wise, i think it could be one of the most exciting. They can be knockout artist, but still maintain enough athleticism to be able to have good footwork, head movement, and stamina. Look at the guys who left or skipped cruiserweight for the hwd. If cruiserweight could keep talent like them, it would probably be the most exciting division in boxing, and it would also bring some light heavyweights up, too. Imagine - michael spinks vs evander holyfield at cruiserweight; roy jones jr vs james toney rematch at cruiserweight around 2002-2003; david haye vs oleksander usyk passing of the torch at cruiserweight. Instead, we see talented guys leaving, and shorthanding themselves, because they're not natural heavyweights.

Johnny Nelson was Cruiserweight champion for 13 titles defences going unbeaten as WBO champion for 7 and a half years, but he still doesn't get high on the list lmao. Yet guys like Steve Cunningham who were win one lose one fighters are rated Number 2 - this is cRaZy and says a lot about the bias of Ring magazine's rating system. Krzysztof Wlodarczyk is the same except this has him at number 1 lol. Krzysztof Wlodarczyk managed 6 defences over 3 years - how does that compare to 13 titles defences over 7 and a half years? Yet Nelson is down in 9th??? This system has massive flaws. 1 It is based too much on longlevity 2 It doesn't take into account how good anyone you beat actually is lol 3 It doesn't take into account how good any one was who beat you or how many loses you have lol 4 It is based upon Ring Magazine's highly bias ratings. 5 The timing of the Rating choice is also arbitary - all the ratings and positions change if you looks at monthly results rather than end of year for instance. 6 It has cut offs per decade which is arbitary. It means if you were briliant for ten years, but that ten years goes between two decades - you're punnished over and above lesser fighters who simply operated in one decade. 7 It adds no weight or consideration to guys that unify some or all of the belts. Worse yet it adds no weight to clearing out the entire division. The best Cruiserweights for me are: 1 Evander Holyfield 2 Oleksandr Usyk 3 David Haye 4 Carlos de Leon 5 Johnny Nelson 6 Mairis Briedis 7 Marco Huck 8 Jean-Marc Mormeck 9 Juan Carlos Gomez 10 Denis Lebedev Outside of the top 5 you can make all kinds of cases for fighters such is the often transitory station and stopping point of the Cruiserweight division, but the above is my list. Guys like James Toney don't get in because they were one amazing fight, one terrible performance kind of guys, we remember the great fights and tend to forget the really bad performances, also he jumped up weights so quick that it is far easier to be kinder to the likes of Toney on a P4P list. There are amazing guys that came in a won a world title and then straight away shipped out to heavy...I can't really pull for those guys, again although longveivty should NOT be the sole criteria, it does have to be a factor to some degree. You can't just say a guy was one of the best Cruiserwights because he turned out to be a great heavy (though if unbeaten or his record was great, I think you can know more and rate a guy a little higher if he does great at heavy - it can tell you more about character, chin etc), or because his later proved to be top notch elsewhere.

I never understand why cruiserweight isn't more popular as the fights by and large tend to be battles more often than not. With modern weight draining and putting it back on before the bout its basically a division that has men who are the same size as the heavyweight division from the time when it had men the size of Joe Louis, Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier or Muhammad Ali and bigger than Dempsey, Tunney and Walcott or Patterson.

I think the list is ruined by the fact that almost all Cruiserweight stars jump to HW - as stated in the video - and doesn't actually show us which boxers were "the best" in each decade. Imho this is simply because there's more money to be made in the HW.
