@Nexils9 жыл бұрын
Koekkie Koelkastrijder We're talking about Snow White here, not Kristen Stewart :p Snow White was pure from the inside which made her more fair than Ravenna.
@Nexils9 жыл бұрын
***** Not really, because Ravenna was still one of the most beautiful women in the kingdom which compensated with her ugly inside. Have you seen the village? All the people behaved like beasts or something like that. She says 'fairest of them all' but I bet there must be a limit to it. Probably only the people in the kingdom. (In the Dutch and German version (for as far as I know, there are more languages) the queen only asks who's the most beautiful person in the kingdom instead of who's the 'fairest' of all.)
@Nexils9 жыл бұрын
***** I'm not sure but in the Disney version the Queen gives Snow White old and torn clothes. Maybe it really is about appearance because everyone was filthy (but then again there must be loads of people in other parts of the kingdom or the world who are actually clean and everything). Snow White is pure from the inside and which is still the reason why she's more fair than Ravenna. I still think in SWatH Snow White is meant to be pure from the inside *or* she (Kristen) really is prettier than Ravenna (Charlize). Which, to most people, isn't true at all :p I'm not trying to protect her or anything but that's just how it is XD or we can go with the fact that Ravenna is actually insane or paranoid and wants to do whatever it takes to keep her power and youth. Who knows if consuming Snow White's heart actually did anything.

@Celestial7Heavens9 жыл бұрын
longliverocknroll5 It is a great film, but why are film critics saying "It's like Alice in wonderland for grown-ups."? Or "Del Toro’s originality is also evident in the fantasy elements of Pan’s Labyrinth. Although some of these elements have been inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Ofelia’s black and pinafore combination, mysterious doors and their keys, going through a hole in the ground into another world). Yes the film isn't an adaptation, but there was some inspirations from Lewis Carroll's story.
@longliverocknroll59 жыл бұрын
Celestial7Heavens You can definitely see the inspiration that Del Toro drew, or at least we can assume that this is where he drew his inspiration from, from Alice in Wonderland but I still don't feel there are enough similarities to include it in an adaptation list.
@Celestial7Heavens9 жыл бұрын
I can understand why mojo didn't include it on the list because the film is very original like what others said, but I was only mentioning it on my list of favorite fairy tales with a twist. Everyone is title to their opinion. Others on the list of comments also mentioned Pan's Labyrinth because in their opinion they see the similarities with Alice in wonderland while others don't, so that's alright. It's just one of those films where there is no law that we have to interpret it the same way as others.

Drew Barrymore in "Ever After" (1998) was also a well done movie. "The Brothers Grimm" (2005) is another great fairy tale movie with a twist. So is "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" (2013) with Jeremy Renner. "Happily N'Ever After" (2006), "Red Riding Hood" (2011), "Beastly" (2011), and "Mirror Mirror" (2012) are all movies that I think should have at least gotten a mention as well.

Okay, some people in the comments need to know there is a difference between literature and fairy tales. Alice in Wonderland is not a fairy tale, it is a novel (and sequels) with one author. Same with Sleepy Hollow, it's by Washington Irving. Fairy tales have a variety of re-tellings just in being written down, and usually begin with "once upon a time" and end with "happily ever after." Even the amazing show OUaT separates the Enchanted Forest from Wonderland and Frankenstein's black and white world, making them separate universes the characters can travel between with difficulty; because Wonderland and Frankenstein are not fairy tales.
@halleluia202511 жыл бұрын
okay. But it still falls under 'Fantasy', right?
@wyrdness110 жыл бұрын
Most of the original fairy stories did NOT end with 'happily ever after' but were seriously dark. Disney was who invented that whole happy ending schtick.
@hayleystahl37946 жыл бұрын
Yes, but aren't The Little Mermaid and The Snow Queen both fairytales? If you're insinuating that it takes a known author who does not use folktales but their own imagination, then I both of them are stories.
@МаксимЛяшко-и3ъ5 жыл бұрын
InkHeart17 Surely you realize fairy tales don’t necessarily belong to folklore? Alice and Sleepy Hollow May not be same fairy tales as Snow White or Hansel and Gretel, but they sure derive a lot from traditional folkstories.

Snow White and The Huntsman is a beautifully shot movie and a good idea with a good cast aside from Kristen Stewart (I actually do think she's a good actress unlike many people, obviously not in Twilight but she's been in good movies, but despite being pretty she's not world ending beautiful which is what Snow White is supposed to be) but is weighed down by largely unengaging dialog and a story that's so familiar to everyone and honestly not all that great to begin with that it fails to really stick in the memory. More of a flash in the pan than anything else, though I have to admit, it's one hell of a pretty film.

Also, the dream thing from The Matrix is reminiscent of Chuang-tzu's classic "Butterfly Dreamer" parable, a favorite among Taoist philosophers: "Once upon a time, Chuang Tzu dreamed that he was a butterfly, flying about enjoying itself. It did not know that it was Chuang Tzu. Suddenly he awoke, and veritably was Chuang Tzu again. He did not know whether it was Chuang Tzu dreaming that he was a butterfly, or whether it was the butterfly dreaming that it was Chuang Tzu. Between Chuang Tzu and the butterfly there must be some distinction. This is a case of what is called the transformation of things."

+Kristan Bone As others have mentioned the "Matrix" isn't an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Only similarity is the Rabbit hole reference and the pill. But in the Matix the pill is only symbolic. How could anyone even make that assumption? It is SF pure and simple. Also Pinocchio being adapted to AI is also a quite a stretch. There is not an infinite set of story lines to work with. Story lines often cross over and are often repeated.

The Matrix was not an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland! It incorporated a few ideas but it was completely based on Plato's Allegory of the Cave. It even involved the religious references (Neo an anagram of one, Trinity etc.)

0:52- 'A valuable lesson: Don't talk to strangers'. You may also add another: don't let looks deceive you. (Spoiler alert) In Hoodwinked, Boingo turns out to be a devilish bunny rabbit despite his cute and friendly appearance to begin with. His so-called friendly and polite behaviour was just a facade to conceal his true colours

You forgot the Labyrinth which is a reimagining of the archetypes of A midsummer night's dream with a bit of Beauty and the beast. That chance in the dream ball was actually the inspiration for Belle and Beast's dance in Beauty and the Beast, especially if you look and compare the clothes.

i kinda liked the snow white version with Julia Roberts which is better than the Kirsten stewart/charlize version i think. Though one is dark and one is comedy-- still. In what iteration of this life is kirsten "fairer" than charlize? I also liked the Brothers Grimm

I can't believe they didn't include "Ever After," "The Thief and the Cobbler," or "The Princess and the Frog." "Ever After" and "Theif and the Cobbler" take classic wish-fulfillment fairy tales and subtract the fairy godmother/genie, giving us the scenario of, what if Cinderella/Aladdin had to save THEMSELVES? As for "Princess and the Frog," come on, fairy tale in the jazz age!

I would have to agree with that one betwe being that Maleficent ended up being the good guy and Aurora's father was the villain Maleficent spends all this time trying to make sure Aurora that die the way she wants her to and then she ends up being the one that breaks the spell with true love's first kiss that of a mother like figure and that her feathered friend gets turned into the dragon in order to defend her and Aurora gives her her wings back

I really enjoyed "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters", it kept the original fairytale largely in tact besides a few relatively minor twists and it also followed the history of the time in that the punishments they put the witches to (and the methods used to kill them in the field) were all accurate to techniques used during the Witch Trial days, which helped to pull together the 'Fairy Tale' aspect with some real-world facts :) add the witty dialogue onto that and it was (in my opinion) one of the best twisted fairy tales! Naturally, I expect there will be those who disagree, so please, don't make this an unnecessary argument, I'm just sharing opinions :P

Why isn't Ponyo on this list? It's a much looser adaptation than Splash or the Disney version of the Little Mermaid. In classic Miyazaki fashion, it features a humble little boy in place of a prince, and a golfdish with a girl's (red-headed of course) head in place of a mermaid. The mermaid's father and the sea witch are also the same person here, which I thought was interesting.

"kaniamia 1 week ago Calling "The Matrix" an adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland" is a pretty big stretch." My thoughts exaclty. Also, Fuck Google +.
@Nomoreidsleft11 жыл бұрын
Did you read Alice? Here's chapter 1: 1- Alice starts her adventures, by following white rabbit. Neo starts his journey, by following the white rabbit. 2- Alice falls enters Wonderland through a rabbit hole. (Allegory for a womb) Neo is reborn from his literal artificial womb. 3- Alice is first confronted with a bottle to drink from or cookie to eat, which determines the course of her adventures. Neo is given the choice of red or blue pill to consume to determine his fate. For characters, Alice has an Oracle Caterpillar speaking in riddles. Matrix has an Oracle speaking in riddles. Plot-wise, all sorts of bizarre things happen in Wonderland that normal are not possible, likewise in the Matrix. The rest of the Matrix, is basically a messiah saviour story. Taken from that often copied book, the bible.
@DodgeThisBam11 жыл бұрын
Nomoreidsleft I feel at best you could say that parts of The Matrix were INSPIRED by Alice in Wonderland. Comparing inspiration to adaptation is the stretch I was refering to in my original comment.
@redjurij11 жыл бұрын
Yeah matrix was a movie "inspired" (aka stolen) by many other movies (Alice, GITS, etc).
@julekmeister11 жыл бұрын
redjurij GITS? Really? Both movies are cyberpunk (although Matrix is post-cyberpunk) so there maybe some common elements specific to the genre. That doesn't mean Matrix stole something from Ghost in the Shell. Although I agree there are many things about Matrix that evidantly were inspired by other work.

The Matrix is an adaptation of Plato's Allegory of the Cave. The elements of Alice are just a reference to provide a metaphor more accessible to most audiences.

You bring up a good point. I always thought the choice to cast her was bizarre but I hadn't realized "The fairest of them all" also doesn't fit.
@NoobGamer-hn5rs8 жыл бұрын
April Sunshine yeah ... I don't think they should have picked her at all... and another one that's coming out I don't see as gonna be good is Beauty and the beast.... cause of who they picked for belle
@ladyduck53038 жыл бұрын
Well, for the record, I do think Kristen was a bad choice and the movie itself sucked but in the movie's and the tales defense iirc, the Queen IS supposed to be more beautiful than Snow White. The Queen's malice and evilness is the thing that makes her ugly (or not as beautiful) and Snow's kindness and purity is the thing that makes her the fairest. Well, at least that's the intention of the tale, iirc.
@ciell187810 жыл бұрын
You know…I hate the Twilight just because of the Fan Base but honestly, how did Kristen Steward land so many jobs? Her acting is honestly very very poor. There was one movie I saw of her (she was acting as a…a well I guess troubled singer in a poor band/bandmates) and she wasn't as bad in it. But then again, 70% of the movie, the singer didn't have that much lines/expressions until like the very very end of the move. ._.
